Will my babies eyes go brown?

Hey hey!

My little boy is 3 weeks tomorrow! I've read that eyes are likely to stay blue if they're bright .. x

What are we thinking? Will they stay blue or go brown do we reckon?

Impossible to say for sure! Blue eyes is a recessive trait, meaning it can "hide" in people with brown eyes. Do either of your parents have blue eyes? If so you're definitely a carrier.

Even if you are a carrier, though, there's still a 50% chance his eyes will go brown!

Mama1980 · 13/05/2023 19:39

I believe brown is dominant so generally unless both parents have blue eyes they will darken.

They can change until they’re around 2 so too early to say

thats not how dominant genes work.

If OP is a carrier of blue eyes it could be 50/50.

If two brown eyed parents have blue recessive, then they can have a blue eyed child.

Heckythump1 · 13/05/2023 19:43

I have brown eyes, husband has blue eyes. DD1 has blue eyes and DD2 has brown eyes.

My Mum has blue eyes and Dad has brown eyes, my brother has blue eyes and I have brown eyes.

So erm.... it's impossible to tell in my opinion! :P

TomatoSandwiches · 13/05/2023 19:44

I'd say they're likely to stay blue and lighten up even more.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 13/05/2023 19:44

Eye colour can change up to the age of 3, but the older they are the less likely it is.

YouveGotAFastCar · 13/05/2023 19:45

It’s impossible to say. My sons had striking bright blue eyes until he was 8 months, people commented on them all the time. Then they went steely blue, and now at 16 months, they’re green-y blue most of the time but bold blue in the morning.

jellytotsparkles · 13/05/2023 19:46

Not entirely true, you are most definitely correct in saying that brown is dominant but I’m a brown eyed woman with a blue eyed son.

His father has blue eyes, however I believe a brown eyed person must be a carrier of the recessive blue eyed gene for this to happen.

My grandmother (rest her soul) had blue & our larger family is quite a mixture of eye colours, anyway with that said my son had the light blue ring around the pupil before his eyes brightened whereas my hazel eyed daughter didn’t.

I see the ring on your sons eyes and would fathom a guess that yes they may well turn blue however brown is just as gorgeous as I’m sure you will agree! X

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/05/2023 19:46

My dc eyes were a brighter blue but changed around 6 months to brown green. Now brown yellow. I have brown eyes DH has blue. Same with grandparents (2 brown, 2 blue). But I have blue eyes within my extended family.

Sorry I forgot to add the quote of the poster I was responding to! Anyway enjoy your beautiful boy x

Emmamoo89 · 13/05/2023 19:47

My sons eyes stayed blue. His dad has Hazel. Mine are blue. All my family have blue eyes and some of his family do. So I never expected them to change tbf

ChequeredPastel · 13/05/2023 19:48

Apparently all that big b little b recessive dominant stuff is bollocks, they’ve found about 30 genes that contribute to eye colour. So could be any colour! 🤣

mummato1xo · 13/05/2023 19:49

Oooh I thought it might be impossible to tell, thanks anyway!

The only people who have brown eyes are myself and my dad and grandma!

My mum has blue eyes as do all of her family
All of my dads side apart from him and my grandma have blue eyes

My partner (babies daddy) has blue eyes as do all of his family!

I guess we'll know in the next few years! Xx

I have brown eyes and DH blue. I have one DS with blue eyes and fair hair and one with brown eyes and dark hair. My DM has brown eyes and DF had blue eyes.

I would say they will stay blue, he looks quite fair but it’s just a guess! What lovely hair he has as well. Come back and updates us in a few months!

This.

And the rings around people's irises aren't very telling. I know and met people with brown eyes with blue rings and vice versa, and I'm ignoring people with hazel or grey eyes.

spaceychimp80 · 13/05/2023 19:52

My kids both have blue eyes even though I have green and DH has brown. I was really surprised and convinced they would change.

SleepingisanArt · 13/05/2023 19:53

Husband has brown eyes, mine are deep green- both daughters have blue eyes. None of their grandparents have blue eyes.... Genetics is fun!

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 13/05/2023 19:54

I kept thinking my twins eyes would go brown but they never did and are like your babies - beautiful deep blue with a very dark navy line too.

InBeautifulKindWays · 13/05/2023 19:58

Eye colour genetics are really complicated.

I have hazel eyes, my partners are light blue. One of our kids have brown eyes, the other has dark blue.

dreamersdown · 13/05/2023 20:07

I have brown eyes and a blue eyed mother. My husband has blue eyes.

My children both have blue eyes - one bright navy blue like your sons, one bluey grey.

romdowa · 13/05/2023 20:07

I have blue eyes and so does nearly everyone in my family. Dh has brown, his dm brown , his df green and dB green. My ds was born with bright blue eyes and at 18 months his eyes are a blue/ green / Hazel mix. I think its so hard to tell what colour their eyes will be

MullerInk · 13/05/2023 20:08

I have green eyes. DP has brown. DD has hazel and DS has very blue eyes.
