Will my babies eyes go brown?

Hey hey!

My little boy is 3 weeks tomorrow! I've read that eyes are likely to stay blue if they're bright .. x

What are we thinking? Will they stay blue or go brown do we reckon?

I would have thought from the hair and skin colouring in the photo that they will become a more vivid blue.
I have two brown eyed DCs, their eyes were more of a navy at birth and darkened really quickly.

thats not how dominant genes work.

If OP is a carrier of blue eyes it could be 50/50.

Me and dp have brown eyes, we have a blue eyed DC. He's definitely her dad 🤣

This was my LO around 6 weeks and this is him now at 17 months. My whole family has brown hair and eyes but his father’s side is all blonde/blue eyes. He definitely took after his dad and I’m so surprised! I thought for sure he’d go dark.

@PicturesOfDogs your little science lesson was quite detailed. Sadly it was also dated and incorrect. The brown eye dominance theory was done away with years ago.

Glad you enjoyed my ‘little science lesson’

It’s pretty much in line with what you’ve posted, so glad my memory is up to scratch. 😃

One gene, OCA2, controls nearly three-fourths of the blue-brown color spectrum. However, other genes can override the OCA2 instruction, albeit rarely

This exactly tallies with what I said at the end, because more than one set of genes are involved, blue eyed parents can have brown eyed babies, but rarely.

It was more to explain what ‘dominance’ meant, as people were getting confused and thought it related to brown eyes being dominant, so would be more likely to be passed on.

Interesting read though, thanks for posting 👍

Same in our household.

It’s very common.

Looking at his hair l,ni can't see they turn brown. But you never know! We have three children- one brown, one green and one blue eyed...

HappyAsASandboy · 07/06/2023 13:09

Too early to tell. My kids were all born with blue eyes and so far I have;

One child with dark-ish brown eyes
One child with light brown eyes
One child with hazel/green eyes
One child muddy blue eyes so far (but he's only 3 so there's time to change still).

My husband and I both have very clear light blue eyes Confused So any colour can come from anywhere, I guess!

MrsSlocombesCat · 07/06/2023 13:29

I have brown/green eyes. My first husband had brown eyes. All three of our children had blue eyes. Then I remarried to a man with blue eyes. Our son has lovely deep brown eyes, I was really surprised when they changed! I think he was between 4/6 weeks when it happened.

Genes are weird - I'm a blue eyed redhead so the rarest combination you can get.

DD1 has hazel eyes & brown hair (her father was brown eyed & brown hair), DD2 has white blonde hair & blue eyes (same dad as DD1). DS has green eyes & dark blonde hair (his dad has blue eyes & dark brown hair).

Although I'm the only redhead amongst my siblings (6 of us) none of my kids have red hair but our eldest brother has 3 kids all with red hair but they all have brown eyes.

Is that really a rare combination? I have five sons, three are red haired with blue eyes.

MamaDollyorJesus · 07/06/2023 15:43

@MrsSlocombesCat apparently only a 0.17 chance of having red hair & blue eyes approx 13 million people in the world which given there are over 7.5 billion people it's definitely a rare combination.

We have lots of redheads in my family but the rest have green or hazel eyes.

VikingLady · 07/06/2023 18:25

DD's eyes turned brown at three months, which is twice as long as you're usually told. So plenty of time yet.

Btw I have blue eyes, DH brown. DD brown, DS blue.

Jumpykids · 07/06/2023 23:25

My ds had blue eyes until he was about 2yrs old then they changed to hazel/green like my DH

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 07/06/2023 23:36

My son is 4 months old and has blue eyes still. I have blue eyes and blonde hair and his dad has brown eyes and brown hair. I can't imagine his eye colour changing but his brownish hair has lightened up

Dh has brown eyes and I have blue/green.

Dd was born with extremely dark brown eyes and they've lightened very slightly but still v brown.

Ds was born with blue eyes like OP's ds - they were properly blue until he was about 9 years old and now they're more greeny.

So in conclusion 🤷🏻‍♀️
