Breast milk jewellery- cute or wierd?!

Okay.... so I can't decide if this is cute or WIERD.

But..... I am currently bf and drawing to the end of the journey- maybe another month or 2. I feel really sad about giving up but I know it's time.

I saw some breast milk jewellery where they use resin to make a pearl looking stone out of breast milk.

I thought maybe this would be a cute keepsake... if not to wear then maybe just a little heart shaped one to keep in a special box.

Thoughts on this? Cute? wierd?

Also- do you know of any other ideas for breastfeeding keepsakes/ souvenirs?

Breastfeeding makes no difference to overall bonding and little difference to the child’s health. I breastfed for 8 months, I would LOVE it if it had greater protections than that (as I was lead to believe) because it would’ve meant my daughter wouldn’t have spent half of her first 2 years at nursery unwell. But no matter how many litres of colostrum and breast milk she guzzled in that time, she picked up far more bugs than her fully formula fed cousins.

Equally my mum’s family are very very strong breastfeeding advocates. Not a single drop of formula passed my mum’s lips (or her siblings) or my lips (or my siblings!). An unhealthier bunch of people you could not meet - we’re like something from the autoimmune disease handbook. All of us riddled with type 1 diabetes, eczema, asthma, immune arthritis, allergies, coeliac… I could go on. Many are obese.

DH and his bro were fully formula fed, have the constitutions of oxes and not a single condition between them, bar one of them wearing glasses. I can’t remember the last time DH so much as caught a cold and he’s the type to bounce up after 6 hours sleep ready for anything.

A small sample perhaps but yes it’s made me cynical! And it makes me laugh when my family bang on about how great it is, overlooking their numerous health conditions.

When my son gets poorly he recovers pretty quick. He's 9 months has only ever been poorly like 3 times. Were I was formula fed takes like a week for me to recover. He was better within a day.

I know exactly what my son feels..

Enmeshed much?

It's delusional to think you can know exactly what a baby feels. You are not him. He is not you.

Ouchmehip · 10/01/2023 22:30

Experts agree that skin to skin contact promotes feelings of security and closeness to the parents, which has shown to positively impact behaviour in children as they get older

I’d interested in learning from the expert research how positive the impacts are and for how long. I breastfed my son for just over 12 months so I’ve no skin in the game for dismissing it, but the biggest benefit
was convenience. My son is 20 and I’m certain skin on skin contact when he was a baby plays no part in the man he is.

Hate to be the arsehole that drops a study into an otherwise fairly light hearted thread but 😉

Turns out no matter how babies are fed they’re equally bonded to their mums 🥰 great eh?

Or 2*

Brilliant. Crack out that breast milk jewellery and recall that special bond when they’re 13 and slamming doors screaming that they hate you because you’re embarrassing. 😂

You were saying your son felt loved due to breastfeeding. Ergo it helps with bonding.

The science disagrees. Game over.

HappyMarriage · 10/01/2023 22:37

I don’t get why so many posters are saying it’s gross? It’s breast milk not urine. I can totally see why someone might want to get something to mark that time of their life. I think if you do it OP this thread shows that maybe don’t share what it is with people but keep it as your own special reminder

I said it felt more loving. And nah it doesn't.

But you don’t have skin to skin every time you breastfeed. DD was fully clothed for 99% of the feeds, as was I. When you bottle feed you can look into their eyes, play with their little hands etc.

Agreed, but there is still physical contact regardless how many layers of clothing. The benefits are not exclusive to skin to skin, physical touch in general is good for babies developing brains and emotions.
I absolutely hear you about playing with their hands etc if bottle feeding, and am not saying formula fed babies can’t experience this kind of bonding. My point was just that due to the nature of breastfeeding, skin to skin contact is encouraged.

It’s a bodily fluid. Like saliva, urine, semen, discharge, blood.

They're all yucky and likely to carry pathogens. Thus possibly health hazards.

The only "neutral" body fluid is tears if you ask me...

Cuppasoupmonster · 10/01/2023 22:41

I don’t think DD was poorly at all before starting nursery at 14 months so therein may lie your answer…!

The study takes this into account and concludes it doesn’t make any difference to bonding. It’s an interesting read.
