So recently we went out and my toddler had fruit shoot and he liked it so I bought some home and he would have it with his lunch or dinner. Slowly slowly he stopped drinking is water and now only wants the juice and won’t drink water at all?! I don’t know what to do?
and it happened all of a sudden like I don’t know if it’s a temporary thing ?

Just don't give him fruitshoots anymore, surely? And when he gets thirsty, he'll drink water.

purpleme12 · 29/08/2022 21:36

Don't give him it?

TabithaTittlemouse · 29/08/2022 21:37

Stop buying them

Water down juice/ and over a week increase the water- start 50/50 and end up at 95/5

Soontobe60 · 29/08/2022 21:37

He’s 2. You’re the adult in charge. Just dont buy any more!

KangarooKenny · 29/08/2022 21:37

Gradually water the Fruit Shoot down

OperaStation · 29/08/2022 21:38

You seem surprised that he would prefer a sugary drink over water.

Aside from being unhealthy, that’s a hell of a lot of plastic waste.

Just stop buying them.

Orangesare · 29/08/2022 21:39

Can you just refill the fruit shoot bottle with very weak squash or water.

JohnsShirt · 29/08/2022 21:39

Water it down a bit or buy some squash and give him weak cups of that.

INeedNewShoes · 29/08/2022 21:41

It's easy at this age! You just don't have them in the house.

This is a useful lesson re almost everything sugary. If you aren't going to want them to stop eating healthier stuff as they opt for the junk don't even let them know alternatives exist until you've got good habits/tastebuds in train.

NishaaS123 · 29/08/2022 21:43

Thank you for the help guys, we all make mistakes I will definitely try and water it down slowly!

Ditto the others. Stop buying them, you're the adult!

peasandcarrrotttss · 29/08/2022 22:11

A few snotty replies here. Bloody hell it's a fruit shoot not crack cocaine.

Yeah it's not the best drink, but it's also not fizzy coke or lemonade.

Shit happens, kids want to try things and sometimes they get fixated on it.

Two options.

Just don't buy them anymore and refuse to entertain the idea, he will get fed up of being thirsty.

Or keep the bottles and add some sugar free cordial to water then put them in the fridge like they are new bottles.

GG1986 · 29/08/2022 22:17

If it isn't in the house, then he can't drink it. Start with watering it down though and go from there with whatever you have left in the house x

babynoname22 · 29/08/2022 22:23

Fill the bottles with weak sugar free squash

October2020 · 29/08/2022 22:24

You're the grown up. No more fruit shoots.

NishaaS123 · 29/08/2022 22:34

@peasandcarrrotttss

yes definitely I will water them down for a bit and then completely stop it. As I said mistakes happen I kept giving it to him because he liked it so much not really thinking of the consequences lol

A tip to get plain water in is to have a water bottle for yourself, my kids always love sharing or finishing mine but don't seem to care that it's plain water, they just want the novelty of drinking it because it's mine. I also agree that using cordial and watering it down more and more will help.

Angeldelight21 · 30/08/2022 03:12

Bravo

TheAussieProject · 30/08/2022 05:51

I wouldn't water down, it will just make the habit of fruit shots longer. Just make a big scene of " oh it is finished" and then don't mention it again. If he asks for it, just say, there isn't any more, and make sure not to walk the aisle at the supermarket.

It takes nothing for a child to refuse the real food in favour of highly palatable processed food or drink. From processed meat product like dinosaurs which don't taste like real turkey breast to processed fruit bars that have nothing to do with the fruit on the label, and slowly one by one, real food are refused and we are so worried of them not eating or drinking, we accept these preferences.

MsChatterbox · 30/08/2022 05:54

Agree with the pp saying have your own bottle of water! My 2 and 4 year olds main consumption of water is from my bottle lol.

MassiveSalad22 · 30/08/2022 05:56

Maybe it’s the bottle he likes, more than the drink?

Mol1628 · 30/08/2022 05:57

You’ll probably have a day out two of tantrums over it then he will forget. Just go cold turkey save yourself the hassle. Two year olds strop over all sorts of things so get used to it 🤣

spiderontheceiling · 30/08/2022 06:04

Has he ever had a drink from something with a sports cap bottle before? It might be that he likes that as much as what's inside it.

caringcarer · 30/08/2022 06:07

You should never have given a 2 year old sugary drinks in first place. Don't give home any more. In case you are wondering don't give him a tablet or he will want that all the time as well. You are the adult in charge. Make careful decisions.
