2 year old refuses to drink anything else apart from fruit shoot?!

So recently we went out and my toddler had fruit shoot and he liked it so I bought some home and he would have it with his lunch or dinner. Slowly slowly he stopped drinking is water and now only wants the juice and won’t drink water at all?! I don’t know what to do?
and it happened all of a sudden like I don’t know if it’s a temporary thing ?

OP posts:

Have to laugh at all of the people saying just stop buying them. Clearly you have never been a mother to a 2 year old or have forgotten what its like.

And OP I say let him have fruit shoot - you gotta pick your battles

sarahc336 · 30/08/2022 06:59

Water it down and then just stop, he's 2 don't let him call the shots op. Fruit shoots are not good for kids. Mine have them as a treat but as I'm sure you know they're full of sugar. You can defo win this battle op just be strict and firm, he'll get there xx

charley39 · 30/08/2022 07:09

I mean it depends if you see an issue with it or not? If your happy for him to have them then carry on.

My son won’t drink water, he’s 4 and not obese or has his teeth falling out anytime soon. I’ve seen plenty of kids being given fizzy drinks which imo is 100x worse.

If you really want him to just drink water then yes stop the fruitshoot but it’s really not going to do anything bad to him!

some of these responses are so extreme! Please don’t feel bad for giving it to him!

Just don't buy them. Sure he will tantrum for a bit and might go a day without fluids- but he will drink water when thirsty. I'm not evangical about not having sugary drinks but for a 2 year old as you recognise its not good.

I have a 2 year old. If I just told her they didn't have any more in the shop so they're all gone and showed her the empty cupboard, then she would probably fake cry for a bit and stamp her feet and then forget. After a couple of days she would forget all about the juice.

Attitudes like this explain why there's so many unhealthy children in regards to diet. A highly sugary drink as the only source of fluid for a 2 year old is doing bad things, this isn't to shame OP who recognises its not great.

20viona · 30/08/2022 07:36

For gods sake he's 2 just don't buy them. He's not gonna March to the shop and get his own.

liveforsummer · 30/08/2022 07:45

Just fill the fruit shoot bottles up with water for a bit/ id not bigger with any drawn out watering down. When he objects just say that's how they make them now and offer an alternative (water in a sippy cup) if he doesn't want to water in FS bottle.

Water down juice/ and over a week increase the water- start 50/50 and end up at 95/5

This 👏👏👏👏👏👏

@Letitmow

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I just think some of these responses are so harsh like she’s poisoning her child.

Catinthesun · 30/08/2022 08:16

Delightful replies here Hmm

OP, I made a similar mistake, but my child is even younger. He had a fever and I was so stressed about his lack of fluid I gave him a fruit shoot.

He does drink mostly water but if he sees a fruit shoot, he wants it! The other day we were at a flower show and I saw an empty bottle in a field of sunflowers so did my civic duty and picked it up for the bin; arghh I wished I hadn’t as he kept pointing at it. Then had a tantrum amongst the hay bales because I threw it away Hmm

The water bottle for you is a good idea, I’ll try that as ds can be a bit camel like at times. I don’t know why I worry as nappies are always fine.

So just to reassure you, you got through two years with only milk and water, that sounds really good. Would he like a bottle with something like Paw Patrol or whatever he likes on it?

Catinthesun · 30/08/2022 08:16

And I actually wouldn’t water down the fruit shoots in the bottle, it won’t solve the problem of him wanting them when he spies them out and about in the wild - voice of bitter experience!

You're in for a whole world of pain if you give in to a toddler's demands

chillipenguin · 30/08/2022 08:21

Don't give them fruit shoots. Or a tablet. Or anything you don't want them demanding constantly.

I am laughing too, because I find very funny that all the French mothers manage to say no to their 2 years old and refuse to buy everything they request.

I don't understand why it's that ridiculous? I have a 3 year old, and obviously I don't buy everything she wants.

And have you seen how the scream at them in public and smack them to get them to behave? I won’t be emulating French parenting any time soon.

What every single french mother.... bit of a sweeping statement is it not?

Marblessolveeverything · 30/08/2022 09:48

Back in the early `00s I gave my eldest flavoured water not knowing how horrendous it was sugar wise - 15 spoons of water per bottle, eek! So just a friendly heads up in case you try an alternative.

I would recommend buying him a little a water bottle that looks like the fruit shoot - try cold turkey - it will be worth it, especially dentist wise!

Maybe try a few alternative "treats" to distract - back in the day I used to make frozen banana ice cream - teen still has it occasionally!

Catinthesun · 30/08/2022 09:48

No more so than the ridiculous statement that no French mothers are struggling with demanding toddlers.

Bit of a difference between buy everything they want and let the kid have a fruit shoot is there not?

WTF475878237NC · 30/08/2022 09:49

You should never have given a 2 year old sugary drinks in first place. Don't give home any more. In case you are wondering don't give him a tablet or he will want that all the time as well. You are the adult in charge. Make careful decisions.

^ this. I don't get the lol here at all

vroom321 · 30/08/2022 10:22

Not judging about the fruitshoots. Most kids meals include them but have you tried them? They taste awful.

INeedNewShoes · 30/08/2022 10:49

Really - whereabouts in France is this? Do you live there?

Very different from my experience. From what I've seen, French kids on the whole have firmer boundaries from the outset so the need for discipline arises much less often.

In terms of food, they do have sugary stuff from a young age in France but it's all in the context of having a really good lunch and eating a diet that is much more varied and much more likely to be prepared from simple ingredients than here.

I was an au pair and the kids ate everything I cooked and enjoyed it. Now I host playdates for my own daughter in the UK and am yet to host a child that doesn't have a long list of dislikes. Most other parents wheel out the chicken nuggets or pizza for playdates as UK kids are so fussy that it's easier to play it safe and give junk food.

But it isn’t letting them have a fruit shoot, it is only drinking fruit shoot and no other liquids every single day. It amazes me that people are arguing that a child only drinking juice is no big deal.
