Newborns finger red and swollen?

ebbyniko1108 · 16/05/2022 14:46

Hello everyone, I have a 9 day old daughter. Today I have noticed that she has got a swollen and red finger. It looks like as if she has got something under her finger nail and on the outside as well. I will attach a picture. Have you experienced anything similar? I am very concerned...

That looks like an infection? You should take her to the GP.

Garfieldismyspiritanimal · 16/05/2022 14:47

Has she got a hair wrapped round it lower down?

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 16/05/2022 14:48

It looks infected. Ring your GP and see if they will see you today and if not ring the hospital you gave birth in as you and your baby will still be under midwifery care.

Doctor immediately.

ChaiTea20 · 16/05/2022 14:48

That looks sore! Yes she needs to see the GP

SherlockTomes · 16/05/2022 14:49

Infection. My daughter had five fingers like this within a week of being born. Turns out she had ingrowing fingernails and as they hardened up they cut into her skin and developed infections. You need to see the doctor asap.

WTFGG · 16/05/2022 14:50

Definitely looks infected , she needs to be seen by doctor straight away .

jusdepamplemousse · 16/05/2022 14:52

Doctor now - they will see her today.

addler · 16/05/2022 14:55

That's incredibly swollen, please get her seen as soon as possible. You don't want to mess around with swelling on small parts of the body like fingers and toes.

Also, congratulations!

WhatIsThisPlease · 16/05/2022 14:57

I'm 48 and am suffering with something similar. It's really really painful and has kept me awake for three nights. I'm on antibiotics now but it's still sore.

Please take her to the GP asap, mine started like that but now there's a huge amount of pus under the nail.

Poor little thing, hope you get her sorted OP.

Sh05 · 16/05/2022 14:58

It looks like an ingrowing nail, my ds2 had this around 7 days old, the go told me to gently massage it out.
They didn't want to medicate such a young baby but at 10 days old his belly button became infected to ended up on medicine anyway. 13 years ago that was!

AnyFucker · 16/05/2022 14:58

Stop messing about putting pictures on here and get her seen by a health professional asap

ladydimitrescu · 16/05/2022 14:59

She needs to see a GP urgently, you don't want to mess about with infections in a newborn. Call them now.

Doctor immediately. My daughter had the same. Ended up as inpatient on IV flucloxacillin for 3 days.
Please keep us updated

Leag1 · 16/05/2022 15:02

Take her to A+E if you don't see a doctor in person today. Baby will need to be weighed for antibiotics dose.

Thanks for your reply. So what was the cause for it? The flucloxacillin did not do any harm did it? I hope it helped

I can't see closely but it looks like paronychia? Quite common but needs looking at and antibiotics asap. My son had it and I recall Kate Lawler from Big Brother's daughter had it and ended up in hospital.

TulipsGarden · 16/05/2022 15:14

(My son didn't have to go into hospital, just GP.)

FandangoMango · 16/05/2022 15:16

That looks like paronychia.
She absolutely needs to be seen today. They will most probably give her antibiotics. If a GP doesn’t see her then definitely take her to A&E. Good luck.

JuneOsborne · 16/05/2022 15:16

Ouch! Hope that the Dr sees her asap.

Would antibiotics harm my baby?😞😞

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 16/05/2022 15:22

No, antibiotics aren't going to hurt her but an untreated infection will!

Ffs blood sepsis or a missing finger would definitely harm her wouldn’t they?
Go straight to hospital and stop faffing around waiting for the gp.

WTFGG · 16/05/2022 15:23

Antibiotics won’t harm your baby. Lots of babies on neonatal units have antibiotics. Our daughter had antibiotics at similar age for similar infection.
Please do get your beautiful baby seen today.
