Taking baby food shopping

Nazz10 · 12/12/2021 20:24

Please don't judge but my baby is 8 months old and we have never been food shopping. I always go when DH is home or DH will go when he finishes work or we get it delivered. Mainly because I just want to avoid the faff of lugging everything etc.
But I really want to be able to do it now DS can sit in the infant seats part of shopping trolleys.
However my obstacle now is disinfecting the trolley safely. Especially with covid around...
How do you mums do this? I was thinking of taking dettol wipes and wiping over the trolley but they take forever to dry when I use them at home.
Any suggestions?

Carry the baby in a sling?

Ilikecheeseontoast · 12/12/2021 20:30

I just give the trolley a quick wipe with the trolley cleaner stuff available as you walk in. Sometiill drapes blanket over the seat/bar so he doesn’t have to touch it and it’s a bit comfier for him x

*sometimes I drape.... dumb typos

No judgement - it’s much quicker and easier on your own! I run over the handle bar with a disinfectant wipe as it’s the part that everyone touches. I admit I don’t bother with the seat as I’m sure it’s only really touched by other baby/toddler bums. It seems to dry quick enough.

You can buy these too:

Take some kitchen roll and dry it?

Place a blanket over the seat first?

Leave the baby in the car seat?

Theremoresefulday · 12/12/2021 20:34

I would rub the alcohol gel for hands over the seat and put a blanket in it? It dries pretty quickly.

Umm...you're over thinking it.

Baby won't be licking the trolley seat.
He won't be sitting naked in the trolley.

Just how many germs do you think will transfer?

Just wiped the handles down with the spray they provide... Job done.

Timeturnerplease · 12/12/2021 20:35

By 6 months I honestly didn’t think about it with my eldest (2019 though, so pre covid). She was putting everything in her mouth by then, so it seemed somewhat redundant.

Enjoy - the trolley seat stage is the easy time for food shopping! When they’re too ‘grown up’ (she’s only just 3 fgs) it takes 532 million times longer to get around, especially if you have a tiny one in a buggy too.

Wondering1000 · 12/12/2021 20:37

I just stick him in it, after checking for any visible grub. It's the people using it after him who have to worry! Grin

RoseMartha · 12/12/2021 20:42

I used to use dettol type wipes and wipe it all down including the handle.

I dont think you need to wait for it to dry. Just put your dc in and strap them in. I used to wipe the strap also.

PinkPlantCase · 12/12/2021 20:46

I put baby in the seat and then when I sanitise my hands input loads on and rub them all over the parts the trolley that baby might touch.

I settled on this method because it quick and there’s always a bottle neck around the entrance by the sanitising station and I figure the risk from covid is greater from being really close to people than from touching things.

RedwineforSantaplease · 12/12/2021 21:46

I don't think about it and just stick him in it. He's partial to nibbling shoes so I don't think any extra harm will come from a trolley.

Bigoldmachine · 12/12/2021 21:50

I carry DS on one hip, push empty trolley in with the other. Spray handle etc and wipe at the entrance to store, sit DS in seat. Try to stop him chewing everything I put in the trolley haha.

I really rate food shopping as baby entertainment, they love it!

firstimemamma · 12/12/2021 21:53

I would just not bother cleaning the trolley at all. Germ exposure is vital for a baby's development. My dh is medical and is now witnessing first-hand what protecting children from germs for much of last year is causing and it's not good.

hippohippohippo · 12/12/2021 22:23

Tbh I try to get food delivered myself as I dread a supermarket meltdown but I like the vital baby sanitising water stuff as it's food safe and safe for baby's skin too. A quick spray of that and I'd be happy.

Megan2018 · 12/12/2021 22:26

I have never disinfected a trolley. Hand gel for me, hands washed (both of us) when we get home.
If they are going to get it, it will be airborne from the supermarket, not the trolley.

kowari · 12/12/2021 22:26

Single parent so always shopped with my child. Never cleaned a trolley, though you could just put baby in a sling if you are worried.

HalloHello · 12/12/2021 22:30

Are you worried about germs here or the disinfectant?? Why does it being dry make a difference?

asha456 · 12/12/2021 22:31

I understand having anxiety about germs but I have got past it . I don't bother disinfecting trolleys. Just put them in. They are on swings, crawling on floors, chewing people's shoes etc. Their immune system needs to be exposed to plenty of germs.

bluesky45 · 12/12/2021 22:32

Mine just get in the trolley. I may or may not wipe it with the cleaning stuff they leave out. I may or may not rub sanitizer on their hands when we leave.

Tee20x · 12/12/2021 22:33

How big a shop do you do? Can you avoid this altogether and keep baby in buggy? When I go midweek shopping I keep baby in buggy and put a large reusable bag in the bottom of the buggy & make use of the "shop and go" thing that big supermarkets do - scan items as I go along and sling them under the buggy.

Baby is comfortable and happy & shopping is so much quicker.

Aside from that, just put a Muslin over the seat and wipe down anything the baby will touch with their hands.

gogohm · 12/12/2021 22:34

You worry the first couple of times then get over it. Mine were born when the first sars was going around where we lived, a more serious disease, you get over it

EcoCustard · 12/12/2021 22:34

I don’t think I have ever wiped the trolley with wipes or disinfectant. Washed hands and that’s it. Dc4 has always had a fondness for nibbling the other belt, the handle or the chain from the coin bit. He was fine until he started nursery Grin

StruggleStreet · 12/12/2021 22:35

Why not just keep getting it delivered though? Going shopping with children is just an unnecessary stress surely.

Tickly · 12/12/2021 22:37

🤣 I love this. Mine is too.
