Taking baby food shopping

Please don't judge but my baby is 8 months old and we have never been food shopping. I always go when DH is home or DH will go when he finishes work or we get it delivered. Mainly because I just want to avoid the faff of lugging everything etc.
But I really want to be able to do it now DS can sit in the infant seats part of shopping trolleys.
However my obstacle now is disinfecting the trolley safely. Especially with covid around...
How do you mums do this? I was thinking of taking dettol wipes and wiping over the trolley but they take forever to dry when I use them at home.
Any suggestions?

I have never wiped down a trolley, and my kids are fine! They literally lick the floor/toys/other children in nursery. I once found my youngest chewing on a loo brush. Germs are good for them!

DappledThings · 12/12/2021 22:46

Never wiped down a trolley either.

Parusmajor · 12/12/2021 22:52

I keep mine in the pushchair and put all the shopping underneath but I wouldn't wipe a trolley down. He needs exposure to everyday dirt and germs!

I'm another whose never wiped the trolly.

Apart from those first months when we thought you could catch COVID off surfaces.

BookFiend4Life · 13/12/2021 00:48

We donthe sling, it's much easier

Eri21 · 13/12/2021 08:48

We both go together and we just carry our almost 10m old in the hands. I certainly wouldn’t put him into those baby seats on trolleys. I don’t know, I don’t trust them even if I cleaned them religiously but that’s just me.

thingymaboob · 13/12/2021 08:58

I have a bottle of Milton spray and a flannel in the car for trolleys but only go inside if it's Aldi (rare) and I need a couple of bits.
However, I do click and collect now for big shops. So much easier! Asda only charge 50p for click and collect (cheaper than delivery and more availability) and we can always get a good slot and you can turn up when the shopping is done (even if it's early or you're running late they're fine about it). They bring the items out to car and you can pack it carefully whilst baby stays in car seat. I never do a big shop in person in a supermarket anymore, 50p is a bargain for getting someone else go round the shop and then bring it to your car for your convenience.

@Constance1

Carry the baby in a sling?
@Constance1 Oh my god why didn't I even think of that!! Such a good idea. Thank you!!!

@00100001 I'm not talking about the seat itself. I know he won't be licking the seat. I mean the bars/metal parts he would be touching. He puts everything in his mouth and will lean forward and suck on the bars (he does this in his high chair and in high chairs in restaurants)

@firstimemamma I completely get it. I try not to be overly protective about exposure to germs but with it being so close to Christmas and cases rising in the community I really don't want to have to be self isolating for his first Christmas if I can avoid it. After Christmas I won't be worrying about it too much

OP posts:
Nazz10 · 13/12/2021 09:50

@HalloHello worried about both. I don't want him to have strong disinfectant chemicals on his hands so needs to be dry before he touches it. Especially because he leans forward and sucks on tables etc when in his highchair or in the high chairs in restaurants so no doubt would try and do the same on a shopping trolley

Milton wipes or similar

Nazz10 · 13/12/2021 09:53

@Tee20x great idea! Thank you! I forgot about the shop and go. We usually go to Morrisons and our local one doesn't have that but our local Asda and Tesco do so will take advantage of that now and give it a go!

Nazz10 · 13/12/2021 09:55

@StruggleStreet we could keep getting it delivered. But I get discount at Morrisons and Asda in store only so would like to start going in store and using it for a change

@MajorCarolDanvers you can though can't you? Just like any other virus. Otherwise why are nurseries and schools etc disinfecting toys and other things at the end of every day?

I thought this going to be about shopping, with food for a baby.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/12/2021 10:11

Wipes are both terrible for the environment and unnecessary for a baby in a trolley, germs are good for them! The obsession with antibacterial everything is really bad for health

Toddlerteaplease · 13/12/2021 10:15

@firstimemamma

I would just not bother cleaning the trolley at all. Germ exposure is vital for a baby's development. My dh is medical and is now witnessing first-hand what protecting children from germs for much of last year is causing and it's not good.
I completely agree. No exposure for germs is not a good thing.
Chely · 13/12/2021 10:23

You can buy covers for them online if you are that worried.
Supermarkets have spray and tissue available due to covid atm anyway so you can carry and sanitise when you go in.
I have antibacterial wipes in nappy bag for public changing mats and clean the sear if it's quite dirty, I have a knitted blanket for extra cushioning on the lay down seats for 4mth old. I'm not bothered to clean seats mostly and it's not harmed any of our 6.

jupitermars1345 · 13/12/2021 11:56

I thought surface transmission of covid is low?

Honestly I've never wiped the trolley down 🙈🤦‍♀️

This…I worry about the implications of over-sanitising. And this is an 8 month old, not a tiny newborn where I would have a different risk tolerance towards germs.
bilbodog · 13/12/2021 12:03

OP do a trial run to just buy some bits rather than a serious shop - its easy once youve done it. I remember being terrified of going shopping with my first 31 years ago!

I'd be interested to see the date of that report.

It's been more that a year since the who, cdc, nhs etc have reported that formite transmission risk is very low.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/12/2021 16:40

@Nazz10

Cause it's just basic hygiene.
