Tiny DS in hospital with bronchiolitis - hand hold

DS 14weeks has had a bit of a cold the last few days but this morning really deteriorated. I took him to the GP who said it was just a cold and sent me away. Throughout the day he got worse, fighting for breath, not feeding at all etc so I insisted the GP see him again this afternoon. One look at him and we were sent straight to hospital. DS is now on oxygen with a feeding tube and I’m in bits seeing my tiny baby so helpless. I’m trying to pump but I’m so exhausted and hungry I’m not getting much. DP not allowed to stay due to bloody fucking Covid even though we’re in a side room. Not sure why I’m posting other than to just get it out there.

I wonder if anyone here has experience of babies having drug withdrawals after coming off heavy sedation? It’s been 48 hours since H was taken off the ventilator but he’s still having a bit of a comedown! I’m not sure how to help him, he’s miserable. He’s still on oxygen and has a feeding tube. He’s showing no signs of being ready to feed. However, he was showing no signs of being ready to come off the ventilator then 24 hours later his tube was removed so 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I my experience of babies and NG tubes (worked on a neonatal ward) it is much the same as the vent, one minute they aren't at all interested in feeding then, all of a sudden, they are. Fingers crossed Henry does the same.

MoreGinPlease2020 · 16/09/2021 19:34

My daughter was transferred back to our local hospital after being discharged from PICU and was there for 4 days being weaned off the sedatives. They cut the dose down really slowly and she was absolutely fine. Have they discussed weaning with you?

Floopyandtired · 16/09/2021 20:06

@MoreGinPlease2020 they haven’t done gradual weaning, just gone cold turkey. He is scratching a lot. I have discussed with consultant and they have prescribed some oramorph (spelling?!)

MoreGinPlease2020 · 16/09/2021 20:09

Maybe ask the consultant again but I guess if H is already off the drugs, then they won't need to wean him - just manage any withdrawal. Different drugs must have different protocols - they'll know what they're doing but you know your DS so definitely mention anything you notice that doesn't feel or look right.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/09/2021 21:02

Is he on clonidine. That's what is used to wean from
Prolonged sedation. Speak to the children's pain team. They deal with withdrawals.

Ticksallboxes · 16/09/2021 23:05

So pleased that your little H has come off the ventilator. He's a little soldier!!
