How many Easter eggs do you get your children ??

I have a 5 year old and is an only child and she always does so well as we come from a large family so will receive Easter eggs from both grandparents, aunties uncles etc
So this year as a single parent and a bit strapped for cash I'm thinking of getting my dd just 3 Easter eggs I would normally do a lot more and maybe a soft toy or a small toy. I feel bad but I think it's a waste of money and over exaggerated !
Just wondering what other parents do/or how many eggs they get ?

One chocolate egg and occasionally some mini ones if we are bothering with an egg hunt. They usually get a few more from relatives. My kids arent too fussed by chocolate (prefer sweets) so we tend to be eating them for months.

Cattitudes · 20/03/2021 07:42

Mini ones in Easter egg hunt leading to one big one. This year I have splashed out too on some hot chocolate melts as they enjoyed the ones they got at Christmas. They will probably buy some for each other too.

DeathMetalMum · 20/03/2021 07:47

One, this year they have lindt ones which are a bit more than we would normally spend. We don't do presents or money - dp has suggested money but I'm not keen on the idea. We do have a big family and they end up with around 10 or so eggs usually. Easter isn't a huge thing in our house really. Dp is normally working anyway, so we don't do a big celebration.

To be fair, there isn’t much chocolate in a chocolate egg. The markup on them is huge. But I still wouldn’t get more than one. I just got one from my parents as a child, and one from my aunt. It’s not about the cost per se, or the healthiness or not, it’s just the conspicuous consumption that makes me feel uncomfortable. One of my DC doesn’t like chocolate at all, so I come up with something else for her.

FelicityPike · 20/03/2021 07:50

One egg from us. One from grandparents, one from her Aunt.

Pinkclarko · 20/03/2021 07:53

One but they’ll get eggs from friends and family that we try and make last (or eat bits of ourselves sometimes, for their own good of course!) they also get some clothes round here but that’s a regional thing. Seems a bit weird to me now but I had a new outfit as a child with an egg. It’s quite a nice way to mark the change of season I suppose.

Sunshine1922 · 20/03/2021 07:55

We buy one box of the Cadbury's Easter egg hunt boxes and 1 mini egg small Easter egg each.

They share the Easter egg hunt ones as they find them and then have 1 each

They don't usually get them from other people.

If they got more eggs then I would be tempted to eat them! X

I'm getting DS a minstrels egg and the markup isn't much, and cheaper on offer. At Tesco it is £3 for a 175g egg and 2 x 40g minstrels, £2 clubcard price. £1.80 for a 200g bar and 89p for a 80g pack of minstrels.

I don't remember any relations buying us Easter eggs as a child (a long, long time ago) we just got one from our parents.

Mustgetup · 20/03/2021 08:49

Like some others I do an egg hunt in the garden with little foil wrapped chocolates leading to a biggish egg.

Grandparents will get them one each as well.

I easily had 10 plus chocolate eggs as a child from relatives!

SheikahSlate · 20/03/2021 09:45

@RampanyIvy

Parents who are concerned about the health of their children wouldn't be buying that many eggs.

I can confirm that this is not true. My DD's eggs last her about 6 months. She's very healthy, incredibly active, and loathes sweets (the dentist even remarked on her perfect teeth!)

Liverbird77 · 20/03/2021 10:36

No eggs at all. I try to avoid chocolate. We'll get them alternative treats though and make it fun!

HelenaJustina · 20/03/2021 10:41

We are a religious household, Easter is a big deal for us. I buy my DC one egg each, previous years they’ve had a new t-shirt or similar (updated version of the Easter dress!) I’ve bought chocolate this year as they’ll likely get less from family than they would normally.

Yes me too, it's the more, more, more, bigger and better these things have become.
HettieHelvetica · 20/03/2021 10:49

One each. No other gifts from parents, Easter has never been a mini Christmas in my house.

They also give single boxed eggs to cousins, and receive eggs back from cousins. They also usually get eggs from granparents, their godmother and an uncle. It's more than enough for them, and they probably wouldn't notice or care if they didnt have one from me.

2late2fixate · 20/03/2021 10:51

When I was little i absolutely loved an Easter egg hunt in the garden. It was so much more fun that just getting handed eggs. My grans always gave me a larger egg each. But the most fun was the Easter egg hunt for little mini eggs, baking a cake with my mother and putting chenille chicks on it, and painting hard boiled eggs to roll down the hill.

GreyhoundG1rl · 20/03/2021 11:02

He's only getting the dachsund because I saw them and snapped
Aw! Smile

What's the point of six months worth of Easter eggs?

testingmitb · 20/03/2021 11:04

A big one and a hare each. The a load of little chocolate eggs and characters to hide in the garden. No plan to our hunt which mean we always find undiscovered ones over the following weeks!

Popcornbetty · 20/03/2021 11:25

"What's the point of six months worth of Easter eggs?"

When you don't keep sweets treats or chocolate in the house a ferel egg discovered in the back of the cupboard is such a welcomed treat to a movie night..."oh i forgot about that!"! Also so handy to use when baking, can be smashed up and used in cookies, melted down for cakes...the possibilities are endless! I think afew left over strays are awesome!

SheikahSlate · 20/03/2021 11:30

@GreyhoundG1rl

It's an exciting way of accumulating a stash of chocolate for the next 6 months! Means I rarely need to buy any, and it provides a bit of fun and excitement on Easter Morning, so win win!

I had no idea it was so controversial. But I've been on Mumsnet for only three days, and I've already found numerous things that are / are not controversial, that I previously thought were not / were. What I'm learning so far is....each to their own!

merryhouse · 20/03/2021 11:47

I get them one each. Grandparents each provide one each too - granddad not any more because he has no idea it's easter and his grandchildren are all old enough to cope with that, but granny is still going strong and has a younger grandson as well. Oldest aunt (lives with granddad) used to, in the days when we visited them every easter.

They have several aunts and uncles but when they were tiny it was just getting ridiculous so we all agreed not to do it any more (apart from oldest aunt, who received a home-made one in return).

I think they may have got each other one last year (aged 17 and 20).

PerspicaciousGreen · 20/03/2021 11:47

@SunshineLifeIsBest

I don't know anyone who buys their dc's just one (unless a baby)) I end up buying mine around 5/6 each then some smaller treats. I love it and most of the eggs only cost about £1.

Perhaps people are concerned about the health of their children? Hmm

It's not really about that for me. I mean, obviously it would get to truly ridiculous levels of chocolate and sweets at some point and then I would be thinking teeth/diabetes, but half a dozen chocolate eggs isn't that level.

For me it's about competitive culture and an obsession with material things. So I suppose I'm concerned about the mental health of my children? I want them to appreciate what they get and not think that all celebrations are about getting things and eating sweets.

merryhouse · 20/03/2021 11:51

Oh, and the point of easter eggs lasting so long is that it's the child's own stash. Not dependent on anyone else's say-so.

One year S1 had so much chocolate for birthday and christmas that he didn't start his easter eggs till june, and then they lasted almost till his next birthday (december).

We never had any rules about when he could eat them (except "not just before tea!"). He quite obviously doesn't take after me...

MrsMackesy · 20/03/2021 11:51

Disappointingly, no Easter Eggs in our supermarket delivery this week - not available and no substitutions.

Are Easter Eggs the new loo rolls - not available for everyone because some people are buying too many?!

Who knew - the Easter Bunny is a stockpiling Egg Bandit in disguise.

Will there be fighting in the aisles and sad faces in the Daily Fail?! Step away from the Easter Eggs people - leave some for everyone.
