We started weaning this week with a spoon of something a day and she just turned 25 weeks. Asked the HV and she was fine with us starting now. We also got the Joe wicks book and it's really good with different easy recipes and his journey on weaning.

We gave her puréed broccoli today and I was so sure she would spit it out but she absolutely loved it! Must just be me that hates broccoli 😂

DressingGown87 · 15/04/2021 22:49

We are weaning but she still hates most food. strawberries is another thing I’ve had to add to her allergies. Loves banana though, but not keen on veg. I do a mix of purée and BLW, but constantly on edge with BLW.

Sls668 · 16/04/2021 02:53

@Glooorb I think it’s about getting the shape and consistency right. LO had courgette earlier and it was literally so mushy that it was all floppy and kept breaking when she picked it up, I’m not brave enough to go any firmer yet! It is scary but I think, working in early years before, I’m not as anxious as I could be as it’s not a new concept to me.

I like the Joe Wicks book too but found a lot of the recipes aren’t really stuff myself and OH would eat. I found ‘What mama makes’ looks like it’ll suit us better when we start weaning officially.
We’re going out to eat for the first time tomorrow and I can’t decide if she’ll just be intrigued watching everyone or if I’ll have to order a bowl of peas last minute to mash up and feed her as she’s causing havoc trying to eat my dinner 😂

I'm quite keen to do BLW but I cant really get head around how you lead upto it. so from my understanding from the HV is that before 6 months they can only have purees but from literally 6 months they can have whatever were eating except whole nuts and honey ?

1990shopefulftm · 16/04/2021 08:37

@krissy12 no whole nuts, honey, anything ridiculously salty or popcorn or marshmallows.
Gill Rapley is a good read on baby led weaning, we re going to go for it at 24 weeks next weekend after reading what she suggests a baby should be able to do to start it. He can give himself his own bottle now and sits in his highchair confidently so feel like he ll be ready for it. There's supposedly no more choking risk with it compared to purees but I m confident with first aid anyway.

1990shopefulftm · 16/04/2021 15:11

baby is 23 weeks old today and still hasn't rolled, starting to think he won't bother doing it at all.

Sls668 · 16/04/2021 15:50

@1990shopefulftm mine is 22 weeks and has rolled front to back for ages but still isn’t even attempting back to front. I think she just thinks there’s no point 😂

1990shopefulftm · 16/04/2021 16:14

@Sls668 I ve tried putting toys just a bit out of his reach but he somehow shuffles his back to get stuff rather than roll there so he probably can't see the point

BlueLilyLilyBlue · 16/04/2021 16:30

@1990shopefulftm my DS is 25 weeks today and still does not roll! He did almost roll back to front today but the playgym arms got in the way Angry. I think he just doesn't see the point. He's far far more interested in standing, which he can do if you just hold his hands now. Maybe he'll skip the rolling step who knows!

BlueLilyLilyBlue · 16/04/2021 16:35

Also meant to add that we're also weaning! Just been on veg so far, giving both finger sized and puree. He's done well with both and wants to hold the spoon himself so I'm going to stick with veg for a few more days then fruit then slightly scarier finger foods.

DressingGown87 · 16/04/2021 17:03

Paige isn’t a roller either. She has done both ways but much prefers to just sit. She will reach for stuff and topple over, and then roll to get off her front. Or you try and tempt her, she will just shuffle to get what she wants.

We have been out for food now 3 times. She’s really enjoyed it and been so well behaved in her pram / highchair, just watching everything.

GhostWorld · 17/04/2021 09:01

DS is 24 weeks and I got some of the little single fruit/veg pouches but haven't tried them yet. I've been letting him play with a doidy cup and a spoon to get used to them, he puts the spoon directly in his mouth so definitely think he's ready for food even if his stomach isn't! I went to a virtual weaning workshop which helped with some stuff but still v nervous to do blw, might try a first aid course first. We went out of lunch for the first time yesterday and it was so nice, he mostly sat in his pram and then I fed him and he fell asleep. I wish I could go out for a nice evening meal but he's particularly shouty at 6pm on the dot haha

Strawberries4days · 17/04/2021 09:18

DD learned how to roll back to belly last night. She was so proud of herself and now does it non stop so we're looking at kids large carpets for her to roll on. She was grabbing her mat while rolling, she was like a little sausage roll haha.

I know some kids don't roll until like 8 months so I wouldn't worry about them not doing it yet. DD doesn't know how to sit up yet so I'm hoping she can do it soon. Every baby is different at each stage, I feel like there's so much pressure for them to do something at a certain age form looking online🙈

DressingGown87 · 17/04/2021 09:29

@Strawberries4days aww bless her! I have a babyzee floor mat from Smyths it’s 1.5x1.0m, which is a nice size and is padded. Was worth the £20. It true they go out at their own pace, and change so much in such a short space of time.

@GhostWorld glad you enjoyed your lunch. I’ve found the baby feeders (Amazon) are good, as I can give her whole stuff without a risk of choking, especially when sat in the park / pubs.

Strawberries4days · 17/04/2021 10:06

@DressingGown87 ohh perfect I'll look into that! Baby minds are amazing how they think one day "right time to roll/sit/crawl" Anyone else's baby been funny learning how to crawl? She's no where near that stage but her bum keeps going up and down on the floor moving backwards like a little bum shuffle😂

Glooorb · 17/04/2021 15:43

@Strawberries4days haha yes! Oscar looks like he is swimming while lying on his stomach, frantically trying to reach for something in front of him, while kicking his legs 😂

Glooorb · 17/04/2021 15:44

And Oscar just had green beans purée and he seemed to love it!! The purée was everywhere haha, it was so cute ☺️

GhostWorld · 18/04/2021 08:39

I dont know if I'm just not thinking clearly because of lack of sleep but when people say 6 months old do you do it by the number of weeks (I.e. 24 weeks) or by the anniversary of the day (I.e. 18th of March, 18th of April etc) ????

DressingGown87 · 18/04/2021 09:02

I worked on weeks until she was 3months, then worked on birth date (15th) for months. As there are 4.33 weeks in a month. But done know if that’s right, it’s so confusing. The red book has weeks and month milestones.
Paige was 6 months on Thursday 15th (birth date) but that was exactly 26weeks.

krissy12 · 18/04/2021 09:28

@GhostWorld I do it by months on the date he was born so will be 6 months on the 29th

SamK93 · 19/04/2021 04:53

@GhostWorld I was told to do weeks up until 16 weeks and then use calendar months. My HV said to me, if you were 25 years old you would say you're 25 and not 1300 weeks old which made me laugh. As @DressingGown87 said I've also been told there is 4.33 weeks in a month and if we carried on working it out like that we'd have 13 month olds on their 1st birthdays. Noah is currently 6 months old, he's born on the 8th Oct so I won't say he's 7 months old now until the 7th May just as I wouldn't say he is 1 years old when he reaches a certain amount of weeks but actually on the 8th Oct. it's just easier counting calendar months now.

Mc3209 · 19/04/2021 08:29

How do you stop baby from getting their limbs trapped in cot slats? My little one insists on sticking out arms/legs when rolling about in his cot, and I am worried one day he will get stuck and injure himself. I know cot bumpers are frowned upon due to SIDS risk, but what else is there?

OP posts:
Mc3209 · 19/04/2021 08:30

This is more a day time problem, as in the night he is in his sleeping bag.

Strawberries4days · 19/04/2021 08:53

@GhostWorld I am so happy it wasn't just me thinking this. DD is 6 months this Wednesday but she would be 26 weeks.

@Mc3209 oh dear! It's when they learn a new move they won't stop! I'm not sure since we don't keep her in the cot during the day as DH works in the bedroom

GhostWorld · 19/04/2021 09:09

Thanks everyone glad it wasn't just me 😅
