I don't do the cube thingy either.

LucyJones · 19/10/2004 20:34

Hi everyone. Fennel - I've never heard of Ethel Austin. Is it a shop or a brand name? Sorry to be thick!

dolbear · 19/10/2004 20:42

I am not sure whether or not 2 worry about eating habits yet , ds eatd p filous , themheinze fruit thingys and the organic banana porrige , anything with powder or slightly thicker than these and it will not go in/down is it too early to worry or should I start to get tougher ?
also ds stays up till 11 and gets up @ 6 for feed which I do in our bed ( so I don't get cold ) rod for own back ?
honest answers greatly welcomed , cos my mum just laughs and says not to worry and some kids get tp the age of four only eating fish fingers and there is nothing wrong with them ( my bro has food allergy related autism ) ( we think )

Yorkiegirl - try this, it's what ds has for dinners this week :c)

1 tbsp vegetable oil
1.5 small onions
25g celery
50g red lentils, washed and drained
275g carrots, peeled and chopped
450ml vegetable stock or water
50g frozen sweetcorn
60g cheddar cheese, grated

Heat the oil in a saucepan and saute the onion, carrot and celery for 2 - 3 minutes. Mix in the lentils and pour over the stock or water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and cover and cook for 20 minutes.
Add the sweetcorn and cook for a further 5 minutes. Stir in the cheese until melted, then puree.

Good old Annabel Karmel

We're just starting to whizz up a few things we normally eat for ds2 - like we usually have a tomato + lentil sauce with pasta during the week, and the sauce has got a bit of everything in - onions, mushrooms, red pepper, red lentils and tomatos. Now we just whizz up what's left over - it can sometimes be a bit lumpy - and freeze it. Ds2 loves it! Am going to start doing the same with spag. bol sauce. Might buy some of that tiny pasta stuff at the weekend aswell and try him on that. He's also experienced his first rusk! Needless to say it went down very well - gummed to death..!

Must say I can't wait to do away with the ice cube palaver - dp loves doing it but to me it's a complete drag..!

dd eating what we eat (except fish fingers and salad). I've been buying gluten free pasta as much as possible and she has had vegetarian lasagne, tuna melt (tuna, white cheesy sauce and pasta with onions, corn, mushrooms), beef stew with mashed potatoes (dh's food), leek and potato soup (next day after it has thickened a bit will whizz up.
The nursery advised to start with slightly lumpy and if they won't eat it thin it a little and try again. dd won't eat very lumpy food but does manage spoon squished banana with her weetabix in the morning.
Have been thinking about how I incorporate lentils into our diet a bit too.

On another note, another not great night's sleep. I think dd had a bit of a temp this morning but we don't have a baby thermometer so couldn't tell accurately. Have dropped her off at nursery telling them to call me if she isn't herself. The two of us still have colds dh seems to have avoided it for now, but it seems to have just dragged on and on and I can't keep using medised (although I'd like to as we get a great night's sleep on it). Smothered her in baby vicks last night. She seems to just start screaming but isn't actually awake.

Chuffed · 20/10/2004 09:24

Oh we did orange carrot with ginger in the weekend which dd loved.
1/2 cup orange juice, about 5 med carrots chopped up, 1/2 cup water, teaspoon ginger and some brown sugar. The recipe said 2 tablespoons but I put in about 1/2 teaspoon. Just simmer till the carrots are cooked, keep any left over fluid, puree carrots and add any fluids to make right consistency.

Yorkiegirl - have posted my best baby lentil recipe on your lentil thread.

Lucyjones - Ethel Austin is a naff downmarket Northern chain. excessively cheap and cheerful but some things (like the tupperware pots) are about 1/3 the price for the same things. maybe it hasn't reached the south of britain yet? I had never heard of it before moving up north.

A branch of Ethel Austin has just opened in Oxford...
Chuffed - our dd has also been doing the screaming but not actually properly awake thing - it's very difficult to deal with, isn't it.
We're behind most of you with the food, I think - still testing cubes of different fruit/veg. lunavix - I bought those lidded ice cube things too (so did lots of the mums on May babies).

lunavix · 20/10/2004 09:41

HD - They've been so useful hey.
I keep trying ds with lumpy food (on sunday i mashed up all the veg and a bit of yorkshire and chicken which he refused. He ate some weetabix and banana on monday, but yesterday and today when i try and give him it he scrunches his face up and pretends to cough, or choke, then I pick him up and he grins and spits it out!

Fennel · 20/10/2004 09:43

yorkiegirl - DP said something outdoors. but it's raining here (again don't think it's stopped in weeks). as he hasn't left yet I suspect he'll run out of time to do anything except the windsurf shop.

dolbear · 20/10/2004 09:44

babies are bonkers !! personel opinion last night ds finally went to sleep @ 10.30 , then woke @ 3.30 left him , moaned for 1 hour , got up fed him , got him back down @ 5 , he then wakes up @ 7.30 bright as a button , ?

mad , bonkers

I need some pro plus

Fennel · 20/10/2004 09:46

yorkiegirl - am considering the leeds meet-up, it's not that far really from here. but like Dot I checked the list of who's going. not many I "know". so not sure.

hewlettsdaughter · 20/10/2004 09:46

yorkiegirl - will suggest pudseye park, thanks.

as for the meet-up, at least there's no-one I dislike on the list! (the Manchester one last year included the mega-irritating Dadslib, a big turn-off). am not too nervous about meeting new people, in fact I quite like it, but not sure if they're mostly (besides you) people I haven't already "met" and also live in a different city to me! hmmm... actually I'd be worried they'd all say "Fennel? who? never heard of her? are you sure you're a mumsnetter?!"

MrsDoolittle · 20/10/2004 12:27

I don't know who Dadslib is but his reputaion is legendery!!
Dolbear your post made me laugh too.
I think dd was a little off colour too yesterday, so justifying me keeping her out. She slept for 3 hours yesterday hence my numerous postings. Dm said I should wake her up because she wouldn't sleep last night!! Rubbish, I said. The happier she is the better she sleeps. She slept fine last night and she wa sa happy as a teletubby this morning.
No problems to get dd to eat anything here. But then considering her parents she was unlikely to anything else We have had a haddock and cornflake recipe from AK book - loved that. Loves any fruit particularly banana (sometimes I saute it, add cinnamon and have it with greek yoghurt).. get the picture?

hewlettsdaughter · 20/10/2004 12:32

MrsD - or anyone else who's been feeding solids for a while - how long did it take your baby to eat a significant amount? I have been weaning for maybe 2 weeks and I'm not sure dd knows what to do with the food when she gets in her mouth yet...

hewlettsdaughter · 20/10/2004 12:34

what i meant to say is she doesn't know what to do yet when she gets the food in her mouth
