lunavix - she sounds ignorant as well as rude. my dd3 has more than that. They're meant to be chubby at this age.

personally I would ignore anything a health visitor had to say. mine leaves me well alone thank goodness.

dot1 - I haven't had SPD but still feel really creaky and old since having dd3. there's another thread on this, people said it often took them more than 6 months to not feel arthritic or stiff in joints, especially if they'd breastfed. (I am really hoping it is post-natal stiffness and not just getting old )

Chuffed · 18/10/2004 11:59

I've had terrible stiffness since dd was born. I hope that your hips feel better soon dot.
My HV isn't too bad lunavix but was stressign over dd not putting on any weight over 1 week yet she is getting 4 meals a day and bf twice and we try to push as much formula as possible during the day (well nursery does). She then kept saying that weight gain does tail off when they get active and I kept saying well she is really active and I don't think she believed me really.
I just take it with a grain of salt really, I'd be worried if she is losing weight but she honestly doesn't stop moving all day (even in her sleep) won't sit still for a minute so surely she is burning off most of what she eats. In general though she isn't a bad HV far better than the temps they bring in when she is on holiday.
Good luck with the bottle/cup thing HD I don't envy you.

Anyone going to a Xmas meetup?

I would have gone to the London one but we are heading back to NZ right before it so won't be in UK for the date. I'm so mad as I missed the summer party for exactly the same reason we were on holiday for that one too.

MrsDoolittle · 18/10/2004 12:18

i want to go but not on my own. Anyone else? HD?

hewlettsdaughter · 18/10/2004 12:29

Not sure I'm up for an Xmas meet-up - busy time and all that... would be interested in an April babies one sometime though (I liked the idea of around their first birthdays). MrsD, you will just have to bite the bullet!

Metrobaby · 18/10/2004 12:37

Which Xmas party are you refering to MrsD?

MrsDoolittle · 18/10/2004 12:40

The one you are organising in London Metrobaby? I thought you didn't like us anyomore

Metrobaby · 18/10/2004 12:45

{blush] Sorry just been really busy and never got around to reading all the posts. How could I not love us April mums heh??

I'm organising the Xmas lunchtime one in London. Although there are quite a few all around the country it seems - plus an evening one in SW London too. Come along MrsD. You 'know' me. There's a few mumsnetters coming along that I have met before and everyone is very very friendly and very much into cuddling babies too.

MrsDoolittle · 18/10/2004 12:47

You are very persuasive, Metrobaby. Stupidly, I am a bit nervous of bringing dd into the 'bright lights', although my dsis and dbro are in London.

dolbear · 18/10/2004 12:50

Lunavix - don't u take any notice ! I always give my HV the ' don't even think about it stare' the only reason she said anything is that I bet they had a staff meeting and that child weight has been in the media a lot lately !! so they feel that they have to say something
so that in the event they can not be blamed ! thats all it is ! A friend of mine, also a young mum the HV did not even speak to her , but to her mum!! rude !
mine was constantly going on about depression , only cos I gave her nothing else to say
I used to take the leaflets and mutter the right yes and no's I am sure that to some people they are a valuabl lifeline and source and information
see I have joined the rant ha ha

Metrobaby · 18/10/2004 12:52

Come on your own then and enjoy a glass of wine or two . Seriously though I think there are 2 mn'ers bringing their babies - including Twinkie who will be brining her new ds. I can't wait to cuddle him as he'll only be a few weeks old. sigh I miss that about ds now. Although i don't miss the colic ! I haven't decided yet whether I'll be bringing ds along as he'll be in nursery then.

Metrobaby · 18/10/2004 12:56

lunavix - fwiw - I always get the opposite from my HV thinking my ds is too skinny for his age. He's very long though. I am beginning to wonder if they are happy with anyone.

With dd I used to take her prety regularly to the HV but used to find it caused me much anguish and I used to come away doubting my abilities as a parent. Now with ds I don't find I have the time too and I'm much happier and confident.

MrsDoolittle · 18/10/2004 12:58

I just might Metrobaby. I shall think about bringing dd though, let me know what you decide.

MrsDoolittle · 18/10/2004 13:04

i don't get dd weighed anymore. I mean, she looks fine. So why distress the poor bay by undressing her and putting her on a cold scales?
I have not had positive experiences with a hv either. When dd had her last injections the hv said "What are you here for?" when I refused to let her be weighed. "Injections" I said. "What her 12 month injections?" Said the very stupid and obviously blind hv. "No, her two year injections" I retorted!!
Sour grapes I say. Only because dd is sooo beautiful!

dot1 · 18/10/2004 13:17

lunavix - I'd be outraged! Ds2 is currently on 33 oz of milk a day plus 30 ice cubes of food a day - he's at the top of the centile chart, but is a big, long baby and v. happy (when he's not miserable with a cold!). Your HV was being v. insensitive and should know better - food is something we all worry about and we can do without comments like that from HVs...

Mrs D - feeling sore because I'm so tired - playing the violin makes me v. tired - yesterday we had a 3 hour rehearsal + 2 hour concert, so I'm particularly sore..!

dolbear · 18/10/2004 13:21

ha ha , bet that went down well HV 's mainly seem to be missing a sense of humour !
ah bless ' em I have not found one person who has found what a HV does v useful and mine are realy nice !! always vewry happy and ' helpful ' they always seem to be working hard , just very disorganised and opinionated ! as ds is on the 91 % curve thingy I was expecting trouble , but no

Metrobaby · 18/10/2004 13:22

Hey MrsD I see you've put your name down for the Xmas lunch. Yahay. Look forward to seeing you.

I'm feeling very happy thee days as I've finally just about managed to get back into my old clothes. Well some anyway. Unfortunately my tops are still a bit small as I'm still bf'ing.

Meant to ask everyone how their babies are at sleeping dring the day. My ds seems to be terrible at sleeping during the day. He has one 20-30 min nap in the morning and then about 45 mins after lunch.

dot1 · 18/10/2004 13:26

ds2 isn't bad at sleeping during the day - but it's taken a while to get him into a routine. He tends to have about an hour in the morning (always 2 hours after he's woken up!) and then 45 mins - 1 hour in the afternoon - usually about 1/2 hour - 1 hour after lunch.

He gets really tired at tea time but we try and keep him awake - if he's really grumpy he has a tiny nap - 20 mins - while we're eating and then I wake him up.

we were spoilt with ds1 who always had about 3 hours' worth of day time naps - quite often still does!

GeorginaA · 18/10/2004 13:37

(just poking my head around the door of the april lot)

Wanted to give you a hug, lunavix and tell you that at a similar age, my ds1 was on 6 or 7 cubes of food EACH MEAL but was gaining according to charts (after a slow start as a baby) and now as a 3 year old still has a healthy appetite but is small for his age!! So I really don't think you're overfeeding your ds and they really do follow whatever weight they're gonna follow, regardless of what you do!! Ignore the silly cow...

dot1 · 18/10/2004 13:49

exactly, GeorginaA - ds2 is having 10 cubes for each meal - 5 savoury and 5 fruit, plus a yoghurt for tea, plus all his milk!! But this is quite a lot more than ds1 was having at this age - they're all different and once they start crawling/toddling will look completely different than they do now anyway (although not so sure ds2 is ever going to look less than 'bonny'!).

handlemecarefully · 18/10/2004 23:23

Lunavix,

I'd second what Metrobaby says - excellent antidote to health visitors is not to attend their baby clinics for 'weigh ins'. Fwiw ds has 32 fl oz of milk a day and about 6 cubes of food like your baby. He has lovely chubby legs and a really round tum which I think are adorable.

Dot -re the 'arthritic' feelings...after I had dd for months afterwards when I got up from a sitting position my feet would be stiff and inflexible and I would hobble like a 90 year old for a few minutes until it wore off. Didn't get a recurrence after this pregnancy.

On the day time sleep thing, I really like ds' pattern. He has about 30 minutes roughly 2-3 hours after first waking in the morning, and then he has 1 - 1.5 hours at lunch time. He doesn't then take any further naps until he settles for the night (around 18.45)...

Also much impressed by Fennel giving dd3 the spoon to feed herself. Now I know I'm a bit anal, but honestly I couldn't stand the mess!!! Ds does make a grab for the spoon, but I just use my superior fine motor skills to deftly dodge him (unfair advantage there haven't I, over a 6 month old baby).

Can't say how much dd eats exactly but has about 1/3 weetabix + 1/3 banana and cereal for breakfast + bf, then approx 6 cubes for lunch (3 savoury, 3sweet) same for afternoon tea and same for dinner + bf for dinner. During the day we are lucky to get 8oz of fluid in (formula + water).

Had a good night's sleep last night although I think the medised helped. You could get addicted to the good nights sleep you get with that stuff.

Still feeling a quite grotty, didn't even contemplate going to the gym at lunch time yesterday and am wondering if I could manage a session today and that is saying something for me...I have the Xmas in NZ goal to get totally in shape.

dolbear · 19/10/2004 10:11

OMG - HMC - I got that foot thing ! I thought that I was some kind of freak - I feel so much better now !
ds eats -- loads and loads ! don't do the cube thing so can not offer comparison , but it is a lot sleeping gone a bit wonky ! 11-9.30??? odd
mst try harder !
