Gasp, I don't log on for a couple of days and not only is there a whole new thread, but there are 100 posts on it!

Are you all just trying to beat May 04?

Now, what would you recommend for a bf baby to go on weetabix...I can't express enough for Weetabix, so it is either formula or cows milk...?

a purely innocent question but wouldn't formula be better than cows milk?

Lowryn · 12/10/2004 17:06

purely innocent here too, what is your concern with formula? There I was worrying about cows milk and intestinal bleeding, and now I am worried about formula. I wish I had more breastmilk

hewlettsdaughter · 12/10/2004 19:18

I thought it was better not to use cow's milk until after 1 year - so I (personally) would go with formula Lowryn.

Tickle · 12/10/2004 19:30

I guess formula is made from cow's milk anyway, but I don't know if it is treated in some way to make the proteins more digestible to little systems? - must ask dp - he's a vet and knows everything (I'm sure that's what he said, anyway...)

If there are no allergies in the family, a little on the weetabix surely won't matter - of either! Then I would just keep up the bf as long as poss

Tickle · 12/10/2004 19:31

ahem - slip of keyboard there... actually dh, so maybe that's wishful thinking for a dp aswell

Fennel · 12/10/2004 20:23

I recall advice to give breastmilk or formula as the main drink til 1 year, but it's ok to give cow's milk if no allergy problems in solids and on cereal after 6 months. similarly other dairy products are OK after 6 months if you and baby don't have dairy allergy.

like Tickle I don't know the exact reason why as formula is cow's milk (unless you get a goat's milk one for allergy reasons). Formula has added iron and perhaps other vitamins which the baby needs. maybe that's why it's important to keep as the main drink.

no, no, yorkiegirl, come back, everyone is agreeing here! I would use either, myself.

have had enough of controversy. on mumsnet, at work, everywhere today.

dolbear, did you do the first year recently or ages ago? did you stop to have ds?

bluecow · 12/10/2004 20:45

Hi all. Can't believe you're onto the fourth thread! DD's teeth just started to come through this weekend (she's six months on Thursday). She can sit for a very short unaided before toppling over - I think because she enjoys her playmat so much I've not sat her up quite so much as ds who was sitting at five months.

She is such a dribbler - gets through loads of bibs in a day. Fave foods are any of the sweeter vegetables and fromage frais.

As for night feeding, what I do with dd and did with ds was feed them whatever time they wake up. Often dd will go 12 hours (7am-7pm) but quite often wakes any time between 3am and 5am for a feed - usually nearer 5am. She always goes straight back to sleep until 7am-ish and she drinks a big bottle in a matter of minutes. DS was the same and has always slept well and dropped the 5am feed a long time ago. Know it's not the right solution for all but it's worked for us and for a few mins spent in the middle of the night feeding always means we get to sleep till 7-7.30am ish.

Workwise, still on maternity leave and probably going to take a career break...

Lowryn · 12/10/2004 20:56

Glad to hear that it is safe to use either milk or formula on weetabix. I don't want to pay formula prices tbh!
I will wait until he turns 6 months tho.
I want to know the make of the plug in vicks thingy...I hate these snotty congested nights

sorry didn't mean to start any controversy about the milk I was just curious. I've learnt so much from everybody's wealth of knowledge.
As we are having to use formula for dd's milk at nursery it isn't really any bother to put a bit on some cereal in the morning but can understand what a waste of money it is if you aren't already buying formula if it doesn't make much difference to the babies.
Hardly got to see dd today as I went to the gym after work and just got home in time to do the bf before her bed. Going to work is getting harder and harder...will just have to get preggers again. Bring on my ovulations!

Hi all!
Have been thinking about what I said earlier re cow's milk and just came back to say that actually it's ok to use it on cereal etc - it's just not advisable to use it as a main drink before a year... however I see you got there before me! Shall remember to engage brain before posting...
Took dd swimming again today - she loved it

Kif · 12/10/2004 23:02

Hello Yorkiegirl - have just emailed you as I have the guilts for not refundung your p&p yet... we;ve had teeth, and visitors and.... I'm hopelessly disorganised - I admit it. My mum has even gently suggested getting a cleaner...

I digress - I didn't know you were a 'March Mum' too!

handlemecarefully · 12/10/2004 23:05

Bluecow,

Nice to see you back. How about posting more often!!!

hewlettsdaughter · 13/10/2004 09:06

Bluecow, your night routine sounds pretty good to me . Unfortunately my dd is waking loads in the night at the mo (5 times last night) and I end up bf'ing her most of those times as it's the only thing which will calm her. Think it's teeth causing the problem - she was a pretty good sleeper until recently.
Am hoping it's not going to be like this when I get back to work!
