DD2 has fallen out with me because she has to have train tracks - what shall I say to her??

She's fallen out with me because at the Orthodontist this morning, he told her she needed 4 teeth out and train track braces for 2 years. Then the stupid eejit of a man said it was up to her and she didn't have to have them if she didn't want them!! you would imagine that dealing with children every day would give him some idea of what not to say, wouldn't you?

Anyway I've told her she has to have them now and not wait etc because I know that she's better off getting it out of the way, not when she's 15/16 (she's 11 btw) so now she's not talking to me

How can I get her to appreciate that she will thank me in 2 years time? Can't stand it when she's cross with me cos I am pathetic I know!

Erm not sure really, you coould show her pictures of how strieght her teeth will bhe if she gets them? or are there any celebs that wear/used to have braces to show her?

I do feel for her though i has my traintracks in for about 2 months before i couldn't hack the pain anymore and ripped them out, i do however still have wonky horrible teeth!

The sooner she starts them the sooner it will be over and she will have perfect teeth you are her mum and are doing what is best for her as always she will thank you in the end.

Let her sulk, she'll get over it.

2 years is a very long time when you're 11.

If I can I'll put pics of my DS2 before-and-after on my profile that you can show her - his before teeth were appalling, his after teeth are beautiful (he had to have a lot more than 4 out over the years - he's 14 now, had the tramtracks off at about 13½)

Tell her that she will have horrible teeth as she gets older if she doesn't have it now. She will totally regret it later on in life if she doesnt have it done.

Charlee - do they hurt that much?? I know they hurt for a few days/ week or so but thought you got used to it.

could you 'upgrade' them to swish all singing dancing pink/rainbow/flashing ones for her so she will think she loooks cool??

yes they really hurt. the tooth extractions hurt. the fitting hurts. the adjustment appointments hurt A LOT. and the actual teeth moving into place hurts. the worst of the worst is when it's taken off. like getting your teeth ripped out. i have a dislocated jaw due to orthodontic work in my early teens. i now can't open my mouth too wide (like a yawn) or my jaw locks. if this happens, which it does about twice a year or so, i have to have to go to hospital and be sedated for them to reposition my jaw.

tell her to get a grip in the nicest possible way and she will thank you so so much in 10 years!

i had braces for almost 4 years including retainers traintrakcs and one that had to be opened each day to widen my mouth but now i lve my teeth and am so so glad. Also she will be one of the first out of her friends to get it (lots of them will, unless you live in a wierd place where everyone has good teeth) so she can show them what its like etce

oh, and the teeth that were supposed to be straightened by all this have gone back to be crooked after 10 years.

Mine did becuse the wire kept snapping and my mouth was being cut to shreads my orthadontist was shite though i had to wait for weeks each time to get them fixed. Im sure it wont be that bad i know loads of people who have had them no probs.

i have wonky teeth because i didnt want braces, and it really doesnt bother me. i suppose it depends on how badly her teeth will affect her life and your dds personality, but if it was my child and they werent too bad i wouldnt force them. but then i wouldnt have spoken to my mum for the whole 2 years if she forced me to have them (really)

oh yes i had almost forgetton about the constant 'shredding' of the inside of my mouth for two years. i think my orthodontist was shite. but he was the only one in my area.

I said to her that if we could get stripey ones we would (she loves stripes) but am not sure what's available. She's not a girlie girl so wouldn't want jewels in but isn't a footie mad tomboy either - more of a hippie chick tbh.

Am trawling web for fancy shit but if it was too expensive we wouldn't be able to afford it.

Tried to point out that I didn't want to have operations when i was young either, and her sister didn't want glasses but had to. She wasn't having any of it! If the orthodontist hadn't given her an option it would be ok.

Am I being unreasonable to be cross with him?

If they aren't too bad I wouldn't force it - I had train tracks, they were agony, they wrecked my music exams (played cornet), and I still have wonky teeth.

I had horrible teeth and had braces for over four years. They are a lot better now, but very painful at the time. I think you should take the tough love approach - she will thank you when she's older!

if the orthodontist thinks they are not bad enough to need them maybe they arent that bad! it s a bit different to glasses or operations isnt it?

Rabbit - their teeth aren't even that bad to begin with are they? My dds are much worse so thank you; it might do the trick!

If they are really bad then make her do it. I promise you she will thank you in the future, when not only do her teeth look good but, more importantly, they are easier to clean.

I admit that I cried every time I had my brace tightened (about every five weeks for over four years) and it was sore for a day or so, but so worth it in the long run.
