oh african drumming v.poncy I reckon

as is gamelan - I didn't do it as a kid but I do recall they did kids sessions on our one at university

Botbot · 03/07/2007 08:32

A friend of mine went to school with Gary Barlow out of Take That. They were in a gamelan orchestra together.

Not sure whether that makes it more or less poncy.

Aside to F&Z: I'm sure I can't be the only mnetter who googled "wnaky basket" thinking it was hungarian or similar .

Luckily I twigged it was cod-speak before I bandied the term about too widely.

francagoestohollywood · 03/07/2007 09:12

Milkchocolate: sorry I didn't recognize you in your new disguise . How are you?
A friend of mine sends her dd to circus classes instead of ballet. I'm actually a bit

Gingermonkey · 03/07/2007 09:19

dd's last school had a fencing club and yoga for kids too. Thought that was a bit a bit poncey considering they were aged between 3 and 7. I so wanted DD to fence but she said it looked rubbish , she's a chav in the making tho.

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2007 09:24

one of the mums in my post natal group shows her 6 month old flashcards in french.

neither she nor her dp are french though.

It was a moment for those of us with more than one baby....

( she said baby "said" yuk, 3 times at his first taste of spinage too)

expatinscotland · 03/07/2007 09:26

For real, LTH?

I'd have found it hard to contain my laughter at that .

MrsBadger · 03/07/2007 09:28

she'll come round to it eventually

francagoestohollywood · 03/07/2007 09:30

LOL LTH!

hatwoman · 03/07/2007 09:32

women like that should be compulsory in ante natal groups. they make everyone else postively embrace their crapness/normality. and they provide the entertainment

Gingermonkey · 03/07/2007 10:26

LTH, can I meet her - I need to see her for real. Does baby enjoy quinoa though? What about acai berries?

slinkee · 03/07/2007 11:04

I don't get why Mandarin is poncey? By the time our dc's are adults I would think it very useful in business seen as China will be the new Superpower. Surely French is more poncey.

Bink · 03/07/2007 11:05

(I told ds & dd Anchovy's ballet anecdote this morning. We nearly had a replay ... )

Bink · 03/07/2007 11:09

Oh, and this is for controlfreaky: ds (8 like yours) asked me to show him some Scottish dancing in our communal gardens this w/e. He was watched with round eyes by two little neighbourhood sisters who then regaled me with stories about their Daddy's kilt ...

On the way to school today, he said "Mummy ... Oh no, I don't think I should ask you to do Scottish dancing on Kensington High Street".

(Did the LRB ever turn up by the way?)

frogs · 03/07/2007 11:10

How very perceptive of him, Bink.

Anchovy · 03/07/2007 11:15

Bink - - glad you all enjoyed it!

FrogPrincess · 03/07/2007 11:18

dd (almost 8) does poncey stuff but we have excuses for some of them:
French school - but she's half french
mandarin - but it's compulsory at school

She then does cello, singing and drama, which I don't think is poncey
she is thinking about fencing for next year though........

love the french flashcards at 6 months

Quattrocento · 03/07/2007 11:20

"I don't get why Mandarin is poncey? By the time our dc's are adults I would think it very useful in business seen as China will be the new Superpower. Surely French is more poncey."

My understanding of ponceyness (?ponciness?) is that it has rarity value. Now lots of children get taught french. Most private schools teach french at junior school and will have french clubs before they start formally teaching it.

Chinese is logical as a choice of language, as you pointed out. But it is poncey (a) because it is hugely difficult language to learn because of the different alphabet and no shared roots with English (b) because virtually no-one else is doing it (c) because it is difficult and awkward to arrange.

Latin is nice but surely not poncey at secondary level? Although I think it would be hugely poncey to get them amo, amas amating at primary school.

Blandmum · 03/07/2007 11:25

I'll admit to dd playing the cello. That is fairly poncy

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2007 11:26

yep, expat.
she has the most over-the-top pfb syndrome i have EVER seen.

Blandmum · 03/07/2007 11:28

Cod is going to Poncetastic campsite in france.

No boden, no booking!

(she has had to hide her crocs)

LadyTophamHatt · 03/07/2007 11:32

there have been many many moments with this particular mum but i have tp say the french flash cards are the best yet.

i can't wait for her to have another baby.....

(btw the spinage was from a jar which also made me chuckle abit....french flash card and jarred food)

Quattrocento · 03/07/2007 11:33

Going canoeing, have decided that crocs would make perfect holiday canoeing shoes. I know they are not proper canoeing shoes but for 4 bumbling incompetents they'll be fine, won't they? Where should I get some? Cod?

bookwormmum · 03/07/2007 11:38

I feel left out - dd doesn't do poncey stuff. She dropped her ballroom classes in favour of ballet/tap just as she was being considered for competitions in ballroom. I'm not too sad about that actually .
