ANY OTHER FORCES WIVES OUT THERE?

Just been chatting with 3andnomore on another thread and wondered if there are any more of us on mumsnet who would like a chat and a comforting moan? I am on my own atm - hubby away for 4 months, and would love to swap 'home alone with the kids' stories - good and bad, and also a good gossip about the other wives we are left with! A much safer outlet for frustration than the hive!

GrannyMcShosha · 03/02/2007 20:21

Cos I think I scared him off hes gone up the shop!

frenziednester · 03/02/2007 20:23

Fair enough there are a very small propertion of the laura Ashley bde left, but that is dying out as their husbands retire. Most of us are 'shock' normal, some even 'shock' work so they can't decorate the mess, and some even 'whisper' have no idea what rank their husband is or what job he is doing - like the majors wife next door who has a pierced nose and dreadlocks and teaches music and still 'shock' manages to not feel like an outcast in the sea of chintz which may or may not exist......

We had one like that, when a new baby was born while the DH's were away, came to see me, in all her pristine spendour, and seriously said to me. 'I know I'm senior wife, but this is much more your thing' ffs she was only a sgts wife, the unit didnt have a officers wife at the time. Everybody used to think she was such a prat.

Skyler · 03/02/2007 20:45

Hi ladies.
I have only skimmed this thread a little way having just found it.
I am still waiting for new flooring in my bathroom 12 months after it was authorised.
I was told MHS have run out of money until April PMSL .
Regarding the RAF pay we get 12 equal payments as someone said earlier, which is good in some ways but just be aware that obviously rent is still charged daily so the wage in long months is actually less than the short months ie Feb normal pay but only 28 days worth of charges etc.
McDreamy - Hope you are OK. I loved Cyprus but can't imagine being anywhere worse whilst my dh was away. I think it should still be a screened tour but there you go.
The idea for our own topic is excellent. You only have to look at some of the comments on here and by the general public (that BBC forum about our housing) to realise that Joe Bloggs just doesn't get it. I like the idea of Forces families though so someone could feel free to post if worried about a brother/sister/son/daughter etc.
Bye for now.

munz · 03/02/2007 20:57

belgianmama · 03/02/2007 21:11

Hi, My dp is in the merchant navy. As long as I've known him he was an officer on ferries. Now he's recently started working as a marine pilot and works away from 9 days and then comes home for 6.
I know I'm not quite a forces wife, but there's nowhere really for people who lead my kind of life so I thought forces wifes would probably be the closest to understanding what kind of life my and my 2 dc's are leading.
So hope you don't mind me joining you for a minute.

munz · 03/02/2007 21:13

not at all. come in join the madness!

Ah thank you. It's especially difficult for me to be the dp of someone who's in the merchant navy but lives in the MIDLANDS miles away from any sea and therefore anyone else who'd be in the same situation! A lot of my friends say they couldn't cope with a dp who's not home half the time, but to be honest you get so used to being on your own that after a while you get annoyed when he's back because that nice routine that you got into while he was away falls apart. Anyone else who finds that?

LMAO yes! that's so true - now i'm getting why do u keep asking when i'm going away next - you want to get rid of me - or my personal fave 'just tell the postman to come back next week lol' they get under your feet when they're home for too long!

My main problem with my dp is that recently he's developped this urge to by tidy all the time and I'm a full time student + work full time so tidying is at the bottom of my list of priorities. Anyway, he's constantly complaining about how messy it is. I'm so happy he's gone again for another 9 days so I can leave the house looking like a tip for a bit while I do some uni work

tinytotmummy · 03/02/2007 22:05

My dp does 7 days away at work and then 7-14 days at home. I have a lovely routine when he's away. Me and the kids get on well, walk to school and get there on time, etc, etc. He comes home and feels the need to "help". He drives the kids to school and is still late, housework doesn't get done and twice as much money gets spent! Sooo glad when he goes back to work again

belgianmama, my FIL left the Navy to go in the Merchant and spent twice as much time away from home. long time ago, but is your DH away a lot?

Loopy, still working on Plymouth no, will ask on Mon as have to phone Warminster about my (non-existent) housing in Torpoint.

3andnomore · 03/02/2007 23:12

Lol McDreamy, very true, being apart does make the heart grow fonder........for a bit, lol!
Shosha...wow...9 month away each year for 11 years....that is a lot of away...must say we have been pretty lucky really, since being married, he had canand, Flaklands, Jordan, Sierra leone, Belize, Bermuda 2x, Gibralta and now Afghanistan, but the longest tour has been 4 month (Sierra Leone)....! And lots of lil bits and bobs, and whilest working as Provo sgtn, even though he was never away properly, he was away for most of the time, lol...i.e. never mind those 9-5 regularish hours....more like day and night anytimes, sigh!
As for the Army rant, I suppose they should make it forces, not army, but people just don't know the differerecne, as such and put it all into one pot, which must be very frustrating for raf and navy, seeing that getting into thse is generally much harder!
Munz, he is gonna be gone for 6 month, presumably, but just as he was on his way out, they told him they would like to have him back here earlier ( I suppose that speaks for him, being good at his job, lol)...wish thtey just made their minds up, lol!
And, argh at being put down into a higher group for PND, I really don't think that being an army wife really has that much to do with it, although, circumstances in general can!
As for Officers wifes, must say, I have met a few lovely ones, some not so lovley ones, too...but I have met either in any rank....
And Naafi, those were the days, it's been a while since I have been in one....liked the german and cypriot ones especially, seeing that you could get a reasonable decent bottle of wine for a quid or less, lol!
TTM...sounds like our house....lol...we do love them really but yeah, when they are away we lead a single with Kids life and it works well, cos it has too, then they come home and mess it alll up again!

McDreamy · 04/02/2007 05:51

Not to worry Munz - just knowing that I might be able to see a couple of episodes soon is enough for me

Welcome Belgianmama the more the merrier!! So out of interest where is everybody? As most of you know I am in Cyprus and when I come back to the UK I return to Wiltshire near Lyneham. Anyone near there? I'm home in a couple of weeks for a holiday. So where's everyone else?
