ANY OTHER FORCES WIVES OUT THERE?

Just been chatting with 3andnomore on another thread and wondered if there are any more of us on mumsnet who would like a chat and a comforting moan? I am on my own atm - hubby away for 4 months, and would love to swap 'home alone with the kids' stories - good and bad, and also a good gossip about the other wives we are left with! A much safer outlet for frustration than the hive!

Loopy - DH's draft starts end of March, we hope to move sometime during next month, but not sure when. Hopefully all will be revealed this week. We haven't been there before, even though DH's preference is Plymouth based, he has had Portsmouth based ships and shore drafts for the past 10 years!! Oh, apart from a little hiccup where he actually managed to get Culdrose, but only lasted five months as he got crash drafted out to the gulf - on a portsmouth based ship!! He's really glad to be able to see out his last 18 months at Raleigh doing what he loves.

We did the weekend commuting thing for about 6 months, it nearly broke us. Really hard.

DH informed me yesterday that he is getting two weeks off this time, instead of his usual week. He was soo excited, bless. Can't say that I was terribly enthusiastic...

Scootergirl · 04/02/2007 20:48

We've always found that it takes about a week or so to get into our stride when H is away and, when it's for a big tour, we just keep pootling along until he's hime but when he's away in little two-week blocks, we get into our stride.... then out of it.... then into it... and so on. It sucks!

Scootergirl · 04/02/2007 20:48

The missing of D off Dh wasn't intentional either!

Hi Twoplusone - much better this week thanks! I don't think I knew you were at Bruggen (as was) I was born out there in Wegberg - Is it still standing? We lived in Gilenkirchen and dad was at Bruggen (a long time ago!!)

You must all be getting very excited I will be thinking of you on Wednesday.

twoplusone · 05/02/2007 12:02

they have only just stopped using the hospital at Wegberg... we know have to go to the hospital at Viersen.. but we have to go to Dulken to see the anesthatist (sp!!!) and too book epidural if we think we want one!!!!.

Glad you are feeling better this week.

PetitFilou1 · 05/02/2007 15:45

Just realised, I do have something I'd like to ask you all about. As mentioned before, dh is an RAF (hospital) Dr. We're probably moving in 18 months and at the moment I work 3 days a week (and I enjoy it - although not today!). When we move, I will have to leave my current job as are moving too far away for me to carry on here but he still expects me to find another one. We are NOT poor obviously. I think this is called 'having your cake and eating it' in terms of me having to follow him round wherever he goes but still being expected to find a job!. Ds will be just about to start school and I would really like to be there for him. We haven't resolved this yet.....

How many of you manage to combine working with moving around? And how many of you work with school age children?

McDreamy · 05/02/2007 16:14

I left the RAF when I had DD because I couldn't work and follow DH around. Sorry not the answer you were looking for but you did ask .....

munz · 05/02/2007 16:19

don't work at all, I did all the time we didn't have J, i'm looking for soemthing now but it's a case of if it's right etc and the money's right to take me away from him - all the time we're getting by without things i'd rather not, esp as I like to be a constant in his life as DH is going to be away a lot now. (we're talking away all week home for w/e)

I'm a forces wife as well DH is in the Navy. My dad was in the RAF, so the life isn't that strange to me. We're down in Cornwall at the moment, but will be moving to Portsmouth in early May. Anybody else down that way?

DH has only been in for a few years, so this is only our second quarter. We were in Plymouth before that.

DH is currently working in Plymouth, and commuting home (about 2 hours) a couple of times a week. Hard work with a 2 year old and 7 month old.

frenziednester · 05/02/2007 17:06

I have run a few businesses to keep the grey matter going, all of which I have enjoyed, but they have been quite posting dependant. I then went to see a career counsellor and decided what I wanted to do really, and am now retraining for it via distance learning, and by the time the children are all in full time school I will be qualified and ready to work.

Have always changed jobs every time we've moved, and have always worked f/t. Easier to find work up country than down here! Have now given up work again as moving next month but don't intend to seek another job as DS now in pre-school, dd joining him in January and now pregnant due in Oct.

Laura, you could be me , apart from my two are a bit older now. We are at St columb minor, but have decided to move to Torpoint in March rather than DH commute. Good luck in Portsmouth

Hia littlelapin I think we're going to be moving to Drayton. Don't know where that is though. Hoping to meet lots of people. We've been here nearly 2.5 years now, and have lots of friends, so it will be sad to leave them all. We're making a trip across to Portsmouth next week to have a look at the quarters and decide where to apply for. Think it's only Drayton with lots of available quarters though.

twoplusone · 05/02/2007 19:58

Laura- hi.. I am sure we have spoken before on here, is your dad in the RAF at ay nic... I may have the wrong Laura!!![oops]..

We might be going to Portsmouth at some point this year if the RAF get their finger out. I would like a MQ in a good area, near a school - i mean within walking distance, i don't drive.
Have heard various comments about different areas. Is Drayton and Pembroke Park Offciers quarters then, or all ranks? Are they near schools?

twoplusone - yes he is

Loopymummy - Pembroke Park isn't on my list of quarters patches. Do you know any of the street names? We need a big garden as we have loads of outdoor toys. DH fancies one of the flats (George Court?) but they have a communal garden, so I'm not sure how they deal with things like climbing frames and slides.

saltire - I think Drayton is just an OMQ patch, but not 100% sure. I've had some really useful info sent to me by Portsmouth HIVE. Their email is [email protected] if that's any help.

saltire · 05/02/2007 20:33

DH would be working at Southwick Park, don't know if there are MQ's there, and if there is , is there a school nearby
