Do you feed your little ones 'crap'?

I was amazed yesterday at the amount of rubbish food i saw people feeding babies and toddlers- has the world gone mad?!

2 kids got on the bus (max ages 3 / 4)at 10am, both eating full size chocolate bars AND crisps, then saw toddlers with McDonalds in their pushchairs, and my personal favourite...a baby of no more than 3mths being spoon fed ICE-CREAM in her pram!!

I was not trying to justify Brain Blitzers fgs. I had not even heard of it until I saw this thread and I would not buy it.

The point I was trying to make is that you throw around the word chemical like it is the the worse thing in the world. In fact, natural food is chemically based and what one wants to try to avoid are the synthetic chemicals, like the colourings in those Brain Blitzers.

I food pedants like yourself always twist and subvert others arguments in order to justify your own view point and it really hacks me off.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:13

I'm not the one wearing the mask though, smug. it's not my thing, really

speedymama, you clearly were implying that Brain Lickers weren't the nutritional evil I was making them out to be.

speedymama · 16/11/2006 14:13

I find food pedants like yourself

If it's pedantic to think children shouldn't be fed unnecessary toxin, then yes, I'm a pedant.

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:14

No, being rude and aggressive is definitely more your style.

We have come to expect no less from you though on here. It's what makes MN so diverse.

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 14:15

I'm not talking about the vaccination itself I'm talking about the added ingredients. Thimerosal has no need to be in jabs- it's still in some. I can understand why someone would refuse both crap food/vaccination- as I said body is my temple type- but I do not understand people who get so upset about the odd piece of crappy junk food, even stuff full of colourings etc and yet are happy to inject their child full of god knows what. I can understand a more moderate approach to both.

Ds1 and ds3 can't have sweetners and colourings, but I'd be far more upset and concerned of they were accidentally vaccinated thann if they accidentally ate some haribo or had a fruit shoot.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2006 14:17

It's interesting to see what the ingredients actually are, but still, even the ingredients that are probably not actually bad for kids are still highly processed. (I do agree with the risibility of objections to "chemicals". What, like water?) Food is best when it's closest to its origins, from what I know.

Oh, and I thought hydrogenated vegetable oil would be solid at room temperature, not liquid. So if you buy a bottle of vegetable oil, it is, by definition, not hydrogenated.

I also thought that ingredient lists had to specify whether vegetable oil was hydrogenated, but I could be wrong. Some ingredient lists do specify hydrogenated oil, anyway.

(Vegetable oil is often palm oil, which is a) not very good for you and b) environmentally troublesome. From what I know.)

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:18

Generalised sniping under an assumed name is pretty despicable though, really, whatever you think of me

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 14:18

agree with speedymama.

but it's ok to be injected with an unecessary toxin? that's weird logic. If people aren't being extreme about crap food then I can understand that the benefit from a jab, will be seen to outweigh the potential negative effects of the crap, but if you're going to be extreme about food chemicals then surely it needs to be extended to all chemicals (sdo that means carpets, paints, treated wood, household cleaning products etc etc).

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:19

Im not sniping.

You are sniping.

I am responding to you.

I'm highly amused at your attempts to twist it as though I have done something terrible.

speedymama · 16/11/2006 14:19

I doubt that most people would not eat Brain Blitzers for their nutritional value, they would eat it as a treat, if that is what they like (not me personally).

Alcohol has no nutritional value but I wonder how many of the food pedants indulge in a glass or two of wine periodically? If you saw the chemical composition of wine or beer you would no doubt fly into a rage about it and demand that all the chemicals are removed.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:20

Nobody has said it's OK to be injected with an unnecessary toxin. But I don't aren't concerned about their children consuming toxins which haven't got an essential medicine attached to them.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:20

"Im not sniping.

You are sniping."

And you're not coming to my party.

It is my name smug rofl
I was desp SCOUSE
but got bored as i am not desperate

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:21

You see, you are even getting your sentences in a twist now.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:22

I didn't say you had done something terrible, smug - as far as the subject of this debate goes, you haven't done anything at all! You're just here to make silly little digs at me - which is fine, carry on if you're enjoying it

doormat · 16/11/2006 14:22

speedymama pmsl re the alchohol
good point

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 14:23

But they could have still had the vaccination without the unessential toxin. That's the point. And it's done far more damage than a brain licker or whatver its called. Just like a child can have sweets whilst avoiding colours etc (ds1 loves whizzers for example).

doormat · 16/11/2006 14:23

someone has already taken the name lemon boo hoo

mousiemousie · 16/11/2006 14:23

I deliberately feed kids crap because the self righteous brigade scare me, I am terrified of turning into one...

I also eat/drink crap myself sometimes , sometimes buy crap, sometimes look crap and often talk crap.

WhizzBangCaligula · 16/11/2006 14:24

What is the definition of a food pedant please?

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:24

I said I had issues with the thread title.

Then you attacked me because of my name.

Go back and read it again. I dont think anyone is going to fall for the "victim" speech today my dear.

You are out to fight the world today.

speedymama · 16/11/2006 14:25

NQC Fully hydrogenated vegetable oil is solid at room temperature. If vegetable oil is liquid, you need to check that it has not been partially hydrogenated.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2006 14:26

To be fair, wine does actually serve a purpose (to intoxicate), which is more than I can say for a lot of these candies etc. And, at least in theory, wine can be made reasonably naturally.

NotQuiteCockney · 16/11/2006 14:27

Ah, speedymama, I saw some references to partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, but I'm guessing organic virgin olive oil etc is unlikely to be hydrogenated? What about groundnut oil?
