Do you feed your little ones 'crap'?

I was amazed yesterday at the amount of rubbish food i saw people feeding babies and toddlers- has the world gone mad?!

2 kids got on the bus (max ages 3 / 4)at 10am, both eating full size chocolate bars AND crisps, then saw toddlers with McDonalds in their pushchairs, and my personal favourite...a baby of no more than 3mths being spoon fed ICE-CREAM in her pram!!

agree trinityrhino- but they're not as good with food allergy stuff (ds1 and ds3 are gluten free)- burgers much nicer from bk though.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2006 09:32

How do you know it's not just occassional?

I don't use food as treats, but from time to time mine (well, my DD1, at any rate) does have a McDonald's or an ice cream cone.

She's 3.

The baby, of course, doesn't get any of that but she's only got 2 teeth so I still have to puree most of her food.

When she was 7 months old, however, and we had that heatwave, I sat next to her eating some vanilla Hagaan Daas and I fed her some off my spoon.

So shoot me.

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 09:33

agree about the peanuts wintersun. ASlso weirdly enough ground organic nothing else added peanut butter gave ds1 the worst ever behavioural food reaction. He was headbanging concrete eating that- had massive bruising all over his forehead.

yes I do feed them crap occasionally

expatinscotland · 16/11/2006 09:36

Towards the end of my pregnancy w/DD2 last year, I felt AWFUL. Had sinusitis, anaemia, and was working full time.

DD1 had a lot of 'crap'.

She's still here, now eating mostly good stuff made at home and thriving.

I really don't notice what others feed their kids b/c I'm too busy worrying about other stuff.

flamesparrow · 16/11/2006 09:36

Mine eat crap too... oh and DS was still in 0-3 clothes at 6 months, and still wears a lot of 3-6 at 8.5 months, so he could easily look very young to be eating certain things (and seeing as he's only eaten our food, the odd sausage or ice cream is on the menu... the child is an icecream fiend - i think it helps his gums)

Enid · 16/11/2006 09:36

lol about the baby

a mum stared at me giving dd3 part of dd2's cheese sandwich in a soft play place last week. I smiled at her and she said 'how OLD is your baby?' '6 and a half months' I said 'thank god,' she said, 'I thought she was about 3 months and I was just about to tell you to stop giving her that'

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 09:40

how on earth could a 3 month old even eat a cheese sandwish fgs- she'd be pushing it out! People are insane!

Lizzylou · 16/11/2006 09:46

DS1 has biscuits/cake occasionally, most of which he helps me make but he eats homemade organic food 90% of time. MIL loves giving him chocolate. Never been to Mcdonalds as DH would kill me...he hates the place with a vengeance.

I make my own pizza and potato/sweet potato wedges and often wonder what people think when DS says he is having "pizza and chips" for tea.....

fireflyfairy2 · 16/11/2006 09:47

Enid.. "Just about to tell you to stop giving her that!"..... huh! I'd like to see anyone try to tell me what to feed my child.. I can;t believe that!!

flamesparrow · 16/11/2006 09:48

I'd have been seriously pissed off if someone DID tell me what not to feed my child!!!

Enid · 16/11/2006 09:52

I think she thought dd3 was much younger (she looks very young for her age) I can't believe she thought a cheese sandwich was 'crap'. Tbh she was what my mum in her blithe non-pc way would call 'a little bit odd'

LucyJones · 16/11/2006 09:56

What's wrong wh the occasional swig of Ribena? This thread makes me larf

misdee · 16/11/2006 10:08

[walks off and sighs]

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 16/11/2006 10:09

ah yes, thread shaping up nicely

is this some sort of compensation thread for those of us who can't get to the xmas meet?

(ps humph-microwave broken ergo no popcorn )

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 10:13

If you want to know what's the matter with swigging Ribena, read the ingredients on the bottle.

I am more easy-going than I used to be about occasional dietary lapses, but the crap chemical squash thing is not negotiable. I can always tell when ds1 has been given shite squash to drink at preschool because his behaviour is so pronouncedly different for hours afterwards.

It's crap. Simple as that. Trying to say "Oh, it's OK in moderation" just doesn't make sense. It's not difficult or expensive to give them something decent instead.

What's wrong with the occasional swig of dog piss?

Exactly

tubismybub · 16/11/2006 10:13

DS, 18 months gets crappy treats now and again. When we go to town for the day I always have a coffee and cake so why should he miss out? (not on the coffee obviously!) I try not to judge when you see what other children are eating although I have to admit to raising an eyebrow as i sat and watch a little boy the same age as DS down a whole Panda Pop

misdee · 16/11/2006 10:14

yes my kids eatr crap ie choc buttons, ready salted crisps, ribena. (why am i getting into this, why why why), but they also get at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, one smoothie(dd2).

btw, how much brocilli can one child eat before they turn green?

Saturn74 · 16/11/2006 10:14

Don't worry, Filly - I'm happy to share! This is such a BIG bowl!

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 16/11/2006 10:15

munz · 16/11/2006 10:17

lol@ misdee turning green.

greenie - I did wonder myself tbh with ribena as I say thou each to his own and it was my understanding it's not ment for under 3's and these LO's are only just over 1.

i'll never forget my nan suggesting at 3 months I should feed J choccy cheesecake with cream - imagion my shock! lol.

I can't believe the contempt that mothers give others because of what they feed their children, particularly when they only see a snap shot of their lives.

My 2yo DTS will eat crisps, chocolates and they also eat copious quantities of fruit, veg and fresh home made meals. What on earth is wrong with ice-cream and ribena?

IMO, by denying goodies, you turn them into the forbidden fruit and children will not learn to consume them in moderation.

The other week, I was in a Tesco Express in a middle class area at 8am and the Grammar school kids were buying chocolate and crips to eat on their way to school. I bet if they had been kids from the local comp on some rundown estate, the holier than thou camp would have called them chavs whose parents don't know how to cook.

expatinscotland · 16/11/2006 10:28

I don't even eat broccoli.

I ate lots of healthy food growing up.

Then I became a teen and started to abuse my body w/crap food, alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana.

coppertop · 16/11/2006 10:29

What might be 'crap' to one person ia a treat to another.

Mine don't really eat much anyway but I'd have no problem with letting them have crisps or chocolate if they wanted it. The exception would be dd as IMHO she's too young for that just yet.
