Do you feed your little ones 'crap'?

I was amazed yesterday at the amount of rubbish food i saw people feeding babies and toddlers- has the world gone mad?!

2 kids got on the bus (max ages 3 / 4)at 10am, both eating full size chocolate bars AND crisps, then saw toddlers with McDonalds in their pushchairs, and my personal favourite...a baby of no more than 3mths being spoon fed ICE-CREAM in her pram!!

put your hard hat on love, this may get nasty

evamum · 16/11/2006 08:29

I've seen a 10 month old feeding herself ready salted crisps....

eidsvold · 16/11/2006 08:36

yup - my 4 and 2 yto had mcdonalds yesterday - can't remember the last time they had it but it was a treat for dd2's birthday.

Yes, occasionally.

Do I feed them homemade organic? Yes, often.

Do I judge the parenting of others? I try not to, but sometimes do. (do you detentiongirrl?)

munz · 16/11/2006 08:51

oooh er! gonna get nasty!

i've seen parents of babies under 1, some under 3, feed their children those plastic cheese thingys, ribena and anything else that comes along- each to his own I say, it's not my boy they're feeding so not bothered.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 16/11/2006 08:53

yes

sometimes

so shoot me

Norash · 16/11/2006 08:55

Ok I wanted to start one of these threads but thought a hard hat cost too much but I hear what you are saying.

You see it all the time on the bus in the morning.

I was shocked when my sons God mother who takes him with her to sunday school every sunday said to me that they give the children Juice and crisps to encourage them to keep coming

I say each to their own but I am really tempted to not send him with her any more but don't know how to deal with it. Any ideas?

mummydoc · 16/11/2006 08:56

detentiongirl perhaps the children you see were having a treat, my LO's get crisps, chocolate, bikkies and pudding often, but they also eat home cooked organic "proper" food everyday, they are both fit, healthy, rarely ill and not overweight. we do macdonalds once a month or so as a reward for something or just because mummy is feeling indulgent. i do bribe my 2 with a choccie bar to get dressed or get inthe car or something if we are really time pressured, maybe that was what those parents had ahd to do....and what is wromg with ribena ??? if it is the suger in it that is better IMo than bloody aspartane in low sugar drinks.

munz · 16/11/2006 08:58

nothing at all MD - just thought it wasn't ment for under 3's or is that just the noraml one

gonna get my hat b4 I offend someone! lol.

Yes, actually the lunch boxes are quite shameful some days but they get lots of good stuff too and they have plenty of fresh air and exercise.

Moderation is the key.

What is so wrong with a toddler having a MacDonalds once in a while, I just don't get it!!

Norash · 16/11/2006 09:03

Mc D bad Burger King good

Saturn74 · 16/11/2006 09:03

Ahhh, a 'good food' vs 'bad food' thread.

Here are two of my favourite cliches on the matter:

Everything in moderation.
A little bit of what you fancy does you good.

As my son has some severe food allergies we have to provide a diet that excludes gluten, casein, wheat, lactose, sweeteners, preservatives and e numbers.

I'd love to be able to take him to McDonald's for tea occasionally, or buy him an ice cream.

It's not exactly the crime of the century - is it?

Yes sometimes i do feed them crap, but most of the time its good healthy homemade food. I do make sure ds has a healthy packed lunch mainly for himself but a little bit because i dont want other people calling me a bad mum

Saturn74 · 16/11/2006 09:08

Popcorn's perfectly healthy!

nogoes · 16/11/2006 09:15

There is no such thing as a bad food only a bad diet. Most things are okay in moderation, therefore I do not judge mothers if I see them feeding their children so called 'junk food' as ds is partial to the odd chocolate bar now and then.

Wintersun · 16/11/2006 09:21

I saw a woman feeding her 11 mth old dry roasted peanuts which alarmed me more than some junk food would due to the choking hazard.

My ds(19m) has a diet of healthy homemade meals and I'm not bothered at all if he has the odd biscuit/chocolate/crisps/bit of icecream.

Trinityrhino · 16/11/2006 09:24

my LO's will NEVER have a MCdonalds.......................................................................Burger King is much better

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 09:29

the baby with an ice cream may have been a preemie- everything is not always as it seems.

DS1 ate a burger yesterday - I was overjoyed- first one in 5 years. It means we're one step closer to being able to go out to McD's as a family. If we sit down and have a meal there it will be the first family meal since he was 2 (he's now 7). ds3 will be 2 in ~January- so if we do that no doubt there'll be the tut tut brigade passing judgement (although they may be too busy tut tutting at ds1's behaviour- he's severely autistic- things not always as they seem again).

I always wonder what it's like to be able to walk on water.

Kelly1978 · 16/11/2006 09:30

yep, mine have crap. The odd sausage roll in the buggy , mds for a treat. But their lunchboxes are healthy and so are 5/7 of their evening meals. I love cooking and make lots of good healthy home food but that doesn't mean that I don't want a break sometimes and the occassional treat is good for them.

I really do think that if you deny all crappy food at some point they will discover them and binge! I think children need to learn a BALANCED diet.
