Do you feed your little ones 'crap'?

I was amazed yesterday at the amount of rubbish food i saw people feeding babies and toddlers- has the world gone mad?!

2 kids got on the bus (max ages 3 / 4)at 10am, both eating full size chocolate bars AND crisps, then saw toddlers with McDonalds in their pushchairs, and my personal favourite...a baby of no more than 3mths being spoon fed ICE-CREAM in her pram!!

I don't give my children enough calpol to worry about it really.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 12:48

Yes, cod, the sugarfree one has more crap in it. In terms of what I consider crap, anyway.

The operative word I used was food. I don't know what Brain Lickers are but no doubt it is some mechanically produced concoction and I do not classify that as food.

RosieMac · 16/11/2006 12:58

My Dad is a doctor and we were fed brown bread, brown pasta, brown rice, etc. etc. and sweets only once a week after mass.
My sister swopped her sandwich for her friend's sweets every single day at primary school as a result.
If you don't give them a small bit of rubbish you're just making it more interesting and they're going to crave it when they're older(same as giving teenagers a small taste of booze at home rather than banning it).

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 12:59

Unfortunately speedymama you can't just sidestep the issue - these products are marketed as food/drinks, and parents buy them, and children consume them. Therefore they are part of this debate whether we like it or not.

I could just as well say "Oh, my children eat everything, no food is a sin - of course, I don't consider anything to be food unless it has organic soil clinging to it".

FrannyandZooey · 16/11/2006 13:04

Have a look in the cereal section of your supermarket, speedymama, or the yogurt section, or the chilled snacks section. Quite a lot of things there being sold as food that doesn't meet the criteria I proposed earlier.

speedymama · 16/11/2006 13:26

OK, lets look at Brain Blitzers that you put up
GLUCOSE
FRUCTOSE SYRUP (CORN STARCH)
WATER
SUGAR
CITRIC ACID
LACTIC ACID
MALIC ACID
PRESERVATIVES: E202, E211
ARTIFICAL FLAVOURINGS
ARTIFICAL COLOURS: E102/YELLOW 5, E110/YELLOW 6, E129/RED 40, E133/BLUE 1

E202 potassium sorbate- nothing wrong with this see earlier posting
E211 sodium benzoate - It is found naturally in cranberries, prunes, greengage plums, cinnamon, ripe cloves, and apples, used as a preservative
E102 tartrazine - synthetic lemon yellow azo dye used as a food colouring. It is derived from coal-tar. Can causes allergic reactions, particularly if asthmatic or have aspirin intolerance
E110 Sunset yellow ? a synthetic coal tar and azo yellow dye. Can causes allergic reactions, esp in those with aspirin intolerance
E129 Allura Red AC ? an azo dye. Can causes allergic reactions, esp in those with aspirin intolerance
E133 Brilliant Blue FCF ? synthetic dye. Similar effects like the others.

So in the fact, the only unnatural ingredients in this are the colourings. If natural colourings were used, like anthocyanins, they would be acceptable.

Bugsy2 · 16/11/2006 13:49

My DD used to eat her own - but I've got a feeling that this is not what this thread is about!

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 13:52

She'd probably be better off eating her own than some of the shit speedymama is attempting to justify

You can't really believe that giving Brain Lickers and the like to small children is a responsible and reasonable thing to do.

Although of course life would be much easier if we all just said "Oh f*ck it, have what you like, I don't care."

Which seems to be the point for some.

ShinyHappyStarOfBethlehem · 16/11/2006 13:53

Stop trying to make people feel bad when most of them are doing they're best, often with v.limited funds, DetentionGrrl..

Smug · 16/11/2006 13:56

I have issues with the thread title.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 13:57

Well, argue your point then instead of changing your name and sniping destructively.

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:00

So, I should "keep" my name, and snipe destructively? Interesting.

misdee · 16/11/2006 14:00

E102 tartrazine - synthetic lemon yellow azo dye used as a food colouring. It is derived from coal-tar. Can causes allergic reactions, particularly if asthmatic or have aspirin intolerance
E110 Sunset yellow ? a synthetic coal tar and azo yellow dye. Can causes allergic reactions, esp in those with aspirin intolerance

these can bring out dd1 in hives, or in the worst scenirio put her in hospital (they have doen in the past)

i havent met a child who reacts quite like her. the tartrazine doesnt bring her out in hives straight away but send her IgE haywire so she will react to anything and everything.

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 14:02

god agree about vaccination socci, thimerosal; shitty ingredient that was entirely unecessary. Unless I was a body is my temple type I'd be far more worried about that than the occasasional brain licker. The worst ingredients in those seem to be colourings. Give me ingested colouring over injected thimerosal anyday.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:02

You're a coward, Smug. I can't see the point of arguing with you. If you had presented any points at all, that is.

Jimjams2 · 16/11/2006 14:03

Sorry I'd be far more worried about the added ingredients to vaccinations than the occasional brain licker. Missed out half the sentence.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:04

JJ2, that's a bit like saying punching someone is OK because shooting them would be worse.

And the Brain Licker isn't a medicine. It doesn't contain anything the child needs. It's just a money-spinner for manufacturers which prey on children's delight in the extraordinary and parents' lack of ability to say "no". They don't gove two shits about child health. It's a pity so many MNers are happy to say they don't either.

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:07

Well exactly Greensleeves. Which is why I dont understand why you are trying to argue with me. Clearly you have judged me on my name alone, and are being utterly aggressive - when as you have stated, I haven't made any points at all.

It is unwarranted and I demand an apology.

WhizzBangCaligula · 16/11/2006 14:09

I occasionally give them crap.

Not often enough to worry about it though.

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 14:09

An apology?

Don't be preposterous.

Smug · 16/11/2006 14:11

Preposterous?

I think you are being preposterous.

Oh, and using nice big words doesnt mask your childish, aggressive posting technique.
