Do you feed your little ones 'crap'?

I was amazed yesterday at the amount of rubbish food i saw people feeding babies and toddlers- has the world gone mad?!

2 kids got on the bus (max ages 3 / 4)at 10am, both eating full size chocolate bars AND crisps, then saw toddlers with McDonalds in their pushchairs, and my personal favourite...a baby of no more than 3mths being spoon fed ICE-CREAM in her pram!!

hmm, i would love to say no, but unfortunately i do feed my lo crap on occasion.
We have water or milk to drink, very very occasionally (maybe twice a year) i may buy a bottle of fruit squash for us.
He has crisps maybe twice a week and i have a biscuit barrel and a sweety tub. These are a treat though, not daily btw.
He loves sausages so that is the main crappy thing that i give him once/twice a week.
I do try.
personally i dont think that is bad, do you?

flamesparrow · 16/11/2006 10:32

DS has crisps... more because DD seems to NEED to share food with him, and it is that or eat crayons

MrsForgetful · 16/11/2006 10:32

DETENTIONGRRRL.....

As a 'Special Needs' mum...with all 3 children 'SPECIAL NEEDS'...

I have to feed them CRAP...otherwise they'd not eat.

And No...it is NOT as simple as depriving them...till they starve...as i am told to do by family.....or as simple as just substituting the 'unhealthy' with the 'healthy'...

i have to make the choice daily as to whether i send my kids to school without breakfast...or let them eat cookies....so crap mum that i am i'd rather they had cookies than nothing.

equally...mine won't drink water....milk....or pure fruit juices.....
so rather than let them dehydrate.....i give them milkshakes (made with crusha/nesquick...not fresh fruit)....cola....fruit shoots (!)///milky SUGARY cups of tea and only draw the line at alcohol...i do keep that away!!!

2 of mine probably only manage their 5 portions of fruit and veg spread over the whole month...let alone a day!

And ....added to this is the dissaproval of people like amny on MN...who would see me feeding my kids...and jusdge me as being crap...and causing all thier behaviour problems.

Yes...i would love to feed my boys 'rocket salad with goats cheese'...but at the moment am just thrilled that i am finally able to cook just 1 meal...where EVERYONE eats it,,,,and i don't have to 'disguise' its ingredients or fish out 'offending bits' . (and to raelly annoy you 'health bods'...the meal in question is minced beef/carrots/leek/peas...in bisto gravy with mashed potatoes and cauliflower ...made with loads of butter and full fat milk)

the only other 'wholesome' (by my standards) meals i do each week are 2 roast dinners and a stew.

so....there you go....i coulkd easily be the mum you see on the bus...handing out mars bars, salted crisps, cans of cola...and sweets...but before you judge me....just think for a moment.

It's the "light" and "sugar-free" versions of Ribena/other squash that are harmful and detrimental to children IMO.

Ribena Light:

Water, Blackcurrant Juice from Concentrate (7%), Malic Acid, Acidity Regulators (Calcium Hydroxide, Calcium Carbonate), Vitamin C, Sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K), Citric Acid, Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Flavouring, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Bisulphite), Colour (Anthocyanins).

Full of crap.

Giving a "treat" (if you think it's healthy to set up that relationship with food for your child at all) like a biscuit/gingerbread man/slice of cake/piece of chocolate which has good decent, whole ingredients and sugar, is one thing. Sugar and fat, even excessive salt in moderation, won't kill them.

Giving crap laden with lurid chemical colourings, complex artificial flavourings and sweeteners is just a pointless and weird thing to do IMO. For example my local newsagent sells a "treat" called a "brain licker". It's a small vial of lime green liquid, so bright it's virtually an independent light source, and has about 40 ingredients. What's it for? Why do they need it? Does anyone really think it's a good idea? Would you feed them boiled sweetened tyre rubber, or crystallised cat shit? It's bizarre.

I wonder whether an occasional swig of dog piss WOULD cause any problems. Some people do drink their own urine I understand, and if it were fresh...

i buy 6 large bottles of cola,3 litres of squash,30 bags of crisps....kitkats,twix,mars bars etc WVERY WEEK...i am chuffed to bits if all the fruit i buy (yes i do have a fruit bowl!!!) is eaten....but usually i end up cooking the apples as they just sit there getting riper...and i cannot just throw them away...so i end up making 'apple sponge' with apple/golden syryp at bottom- sponge on top...and use birds custard mixed with evaporated milk....and again...cos all the family eat some of it...i'd still rather do that than us all sit there with a freshfruit salad...and ds2 and 1 not be able to join in.

food is a socail nightmare in our house...so anything to get the whole family sat togethjer is worth it!

sandcastles · 16/11/2006 10:39

My dd & I had McD's today. We went shopping & McD's is what we do when we shop. There are are far worse things you can give a child, IMO.

Are you the new food police?

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 10:41

Yes, bbs, but assuming you are not one of those who thinks drinking urine is a good idea in itself - WHY would you offer your child a glass of dog piss when there is perfectly good water in the tap/cheap pure juice/milk available?

beckybrastraps · 16/11/2006 10:42

Well I don't. Obviously. I was just musing...

MrsForgetful · 16/11/2006 10:42

it's like i now only bur 'real butter'...made with milk and salt...and use less...so reducing fat....whereas i used to buy all those 'butter substitute'...which are FULL of CRAP....but people will use those...and frown at mine eating what they call crap/

i just try to make as many good healthy choices...to hopefully balance out the less healthy stuff they eaty....but if i wanted a peacfull teatime...guaranteed....i would give them pancakes with sugar and lemon....and enjoy their happiness!!! (well....pancakes have milk and egg...and lemon juice is a fruit....so i try to convince myself it is healthy!!!!)

Donbean · 16/11/2006 10:43

trouble is mrsforgetful, it would me stuffing my face with that lot, kids wouldnt get a look in.....tooo tempting!
BTW that apple cake thingy sounds delish...can you put the recipe on here.

Tiptoes away while all around gaskets are exploding and blowing.....

GreenLumpyTonsilsAgain · 16/11/2006 10:43

"These mothers who only feed their kids organic, homemade food are setting themselves up for a fall imo."

So HMo2, you are now suggesting that we ought to feed our children a certain amount of nutritionally devoid crap, for their own good?

coppertop · 16/11/2006 10:45
MrsForgetful · 16/11/2006 10:46

also all this stuff on tv about healthy this...and school dinners that...and obesity...is just heading for more eating disorders in future years.

MrsForgetful · 16/11/2006 10:47

do i dare admit the recipe???.......i may get banned from posting again...

Nemo1977 · 16/11/2006 10:47

hate all this judgement as long as nobody is shoving it down your childs throat what does it matter...I take DS to macdonalds on occasion and DD has been known to pinch a couple of his chips..it is not a regular occurance mainly because we cant afford it. They are also quite partial to a packet of skips or haribo sweets but again its a treat. At home/most of the time it is home made food and fruit as it is cheaper than the sweets. The only thing they dont have is juice etc but thats mainly due to DS hating anything other than milk and water so the option is not there for DD.

Donbean · 16/11/2006 10:48

Please, i NEED it for pudding tonight otherwise i will have to give my lo crap.

Everything in moderation?

Brain licker, anyone?

Glass of chilled dog piss?

What rubbish.

If you don't want your "points" picked up and responded to, don't make them, FGS.

I am making the point that some of the things on offer for children are a world away from chocolate/cake/plain crisps and are not appropriate even in moderation.

It's not a difficult concept, HMo2. And it's not personal, ffs. Keep your hair on.

MrsForgetful · 16/11/2006 10:59

ok.....

chop up loads of overripe (!!!left over by kids...who think frui is an ornament) eating apples (i tend to use gala or coxes)
OOOh! remove heathly bits first...ie peel and fiber rich core....so all you are using is the soft sweet flesh!!!

Mix them with EITHER a few teaspoons of golden syryp...or soft tofee

put thiss in a baking tin.

to make sponge topping- put 6oz SR flour...(unhealthy white flour!)
4oz sugar (you could be 'good' and use 'unrefined golden sugar'...but sugars sugar to me!)
4oz REAL butter(well ...trying to cut out the crap additives!)
2 eggs (not gonna admit what eggs i buy...just hen eggs!)

and whizz in a mixer...adding enough milk to make it nice and sloppy!!!

then just pourit over the apple mix...and bake at about 140 for about 40 mins....

custard.....

make custard using tinned powder...birds etc... but instead of JUST milk... use a small can of evaporated milk...and 'dilute!!!!) with enough normal milk to make a pint....

I occasionally feed my boys crap. They probably have a McDs twice a month as a treat, and sometimes they have a tin of beans and sausages for tea if I'm in a rush, or some ScoobyDoo pasta with potatoe waffles or something.

But the vast majority of the time I try to make them healthy fresh, non-processed food.

The one thing they NEVER have, though is squash. After 15/20 mins their behaviour is shocking on the stuff. I know when I have had some in the past I get an almost instantaneous headache. Dreadful stuff.

Diluted juice in this house. And preferably homemade.
