Oooo you have an agonising wait too!

I've just applied for another course at Southampton just in case Smile

RedButtonhole · 16/01/2015 15:33

Hi everyone, I posted a few times right at the beginning of the thread but haven't been back since.

Sorry to hear you didn't get in to uni Lumpen but access to nursing courses are supposed to be excellent. A friend of mine did hers last year and absolutely loved it - she is now in her first year of adult nursing. Good luck and I hope you get in Smile

Mike and Chuck I hope you have some good news soon too.

I submitted my application on Thursday, I left it late as I managed to get some work experience just before Christmas and wanted to write about it in my personal statement. I'm not really sure I'll get in, my personal statement seemed a little weak Sad.

On my the UWS website it says I need to have a health screening along with the literacy and numeracy tests if I get that far. Does anyone know what that involves?

MikeTheShite · 16/01/2015 17:42

Hiya, I found the Coventry uni website really helpful for the screening tests, and I know I needed to get 50% on each for brighton.

I've just submitted another application to Southampton too

Thanks Mike, I will go and have a look on there then.

I have only applied to one uni which limits my chances alot, but I live in the middle of no-where and it's the only one which is do-able for me, if I am not successful this time I will try another relevant subject at college and re-apply to the same uni next year.

How many have you tried in total? I hope you get into your preferred choices!

MikeTheShite · 16/01/2015 20:00

I tried brighton, surrey and Southampton.
Waiting to hear from brighton, surrey rejected me and i heard nothing from Southampton.

I think I used Birmingham City uni too for my numeracy and the bitesize websites for revision

RedButtonhole · 16/01/2015 22:03

Fingers crossed you get some good news from Brighton Smile

I was mainly curious about the health screening- I had no idea that was part of it. I am trying to lose weight (I am really overweight) and was worried that my weight would count against me if they are doing health screening. It seems to be more to do with vaccinations though?

Feeling ok about the literacy and numeracy, my maths and English are both quite strong so I'm hoping I can revise and be ok with those.

MikeTheShite · 16/01/2015 23:27

Ooo the health screening I've not had anything like that so far

RedButtonhole · 16/01/2015 23:43

Has anyone else had it? I am really worried about my weight now

ChuckNovice · 19/01/2015 14:52

Hi redbutton. I've only heard of an occupational health check? I thought it was just to check you were up to date with vaccs and check this like existing medical conditions? Sorry not really sure about it either. Good luck with your application.

I've just finished my adult nursing at Southampton and it was the best 3 years of my life!! I am now working in the community.

I helped with student selection for the 2014 cohort so I have got a good insight into what is expected of potential students. One of the main criteria is communication, especially in the group activity. You need to have the ability to put your point forward without being argumentative and also to show that you can draw quieter members into the conversation, even if they don't respond to it. Be up to date with policies, research and codes of practice. Mention the Francis Report, 6c's, whistleblowing, confidentiality, clinical governance, NMC policies, multi disciplinary working - I can't think of others at this time of night!

MikeTheShite · 20/01/2015 06:06

Oh no, my interview was multi mini interview thing like speed dating all with scenario and pictures and questions relevant to then and I only mentioned the 6cs out of your list Hmm

ChuckNovice · 20/01/2015 11:18

I'm sure you did fine Mike. You can only say things which are relevant to the question. When will you find out?

MikeTheShite · 20/01/2015 11:38

No news Confused

MrsHuxtableReturns · 21/01/2015 11:20

Hello everyone,
I'm planning to apply for nursing at my local uni for a 2017 start and am desperate for ideas on how to gain practical experience. I'm very restricted time wise due to looking after DC, working and studying with the OU so what do you think would be the minimum I'd need?
I only have one shot at getting in so it all needs to come together perfectly.

MikeTheShite · 21/01/2015 19:31

I'm going to be a nurse Grin

I can't believe it. I did it

ChuckNovice · 21/01/2015 19:42

YAY! WELL DONE MIKE. So happy for you! Flowers

MikeTheShite · 21/01/2015 19:43

I just can't believe it

MikeTheShite · 21/01/2015 19:44

Thank you!

RedButtonhole · 22/01/2015 01:49

Mike that's wonderful! Congratulations to you GrinThanks

MrsHuxtable When I was looking for a work placement I came across a few vacancies at Marie Curie for help with visiting people with terminal cancer- visiting their homes and providing practical and emotional support as well as supporting the families. They were advertised as "as and when" so maybe you'd find something there?
I ended up in a day facility for the elderly which might be good for you, since they might be more relaxed about days and times. I've had training in moving and handling and personal care as well as the correct way to use wheelchairs, what to do
if someone falls etc.

I also looked into being a ward volunteer at my local hospital- not as hands on as care work but you'd get to see the goings on and liaise with the nurses and other staff. The only reasin I didn't do this is because it didn't give me what I needed ti pass my college course even though it was good for nursing in the long run.

A lecturer at my college said the best place to gain experience if you can't get any in a hospital (Where I am they only take student nurses who are at uni for work experience) is in a care home-
you get lots of hands on experience there.

Sorry to ramble on but that's the sort of things I looked at as I had no experience either. I hope you find something!

MikeTheShite · 22/01/2015 06:42

Thank you Red!

Mrs Hux, I agree with red definatly! Sending you good luck!

ChuckNovice · 22/01/2015 16:46

You found out so quick Mike. I need to know now. I've ruled my other offer out as I don't get as much loan as it's not classed as London and as I live in London rent is high. Although I could defer that one for a year.

LumpenproletariatAndProud · 25/01/2015 12:47

Congratulations Mike. Xx

I wonder when you will find out chuck.

Thank you Lump

RedButtonhole · 25/01/2015 18:44

I hope you hear some news soon Chuck

I had some good news today, I have been accepted onto a twelve week first steps to nursing course starting in February at the same uni I'm hoping to attend for adult nursing. Quite excited about this and looking forward to starting!

ChuckNovice · 26/01/2015 13:14

That's great news redbutton - well done.
