My oldest is five and hasn't worn a vest since he was under two. If it is cold he wears a long sleeved t-shirt under a jumper. I just read on another thread about it being mentioined (on here?) that children without vests have been described as neglected, and actually remember my neighbour, whose children are 8 and 10, wearing vests. So do your children wear vests? At what age did you stop? Are vests fundementally important? It had not occured to me to buy vests beyond the age of two and the baby vests with the poppers.

My DSD's wear vests, they're 8 and 10, I guess they will until they wear crop tops or bras. My ds 3, always wears a vest except when its hot.

I don't really know why , just because everyone I know does that, so I'm copying.

I wouldn't worry about it, they are clearly managing just fine without them and would tell you if they were cold.

My son is 4 and wears vests, however it has never occurred to me that a child without a vest could be considered neglected !

I think I remember wearing vests until I was at the end of primary school, so am probably doing the same for my kids - its just clothing though, no barometer for a well looked after child!

Mine are 8&6 and wear vests and will do until crop top stage.

My girls are 7,4,2 and the 4 and 2yo wear vests in the winter but as soon as the weather turns nice they are off, my 7yo never liked them and doesn't ever wear them so I just put on extra layers, they'll let you know if they are cold.

I still put a vest on 2.5 yr old DS2. He gets too hot in a jumper and teeshirt, but cool in just a tee. He also isn't very good at knowing when to add / remove layers, so we try to get it right on average.

DS1 (4.5 - reception) gets to choose if he wears a vest or not. Generally not.

As soon as it warms up, I'll stop them again.

my dd 5 doesnt wear vests... struggle to get her in clothes let alone an extra layer!!

19 month dd sometimes wears a vest but she gets quite hot and also have a super snuggly foot muff to keep her warm

It's a tad extreme to say children without vests are neglected. Children without shoes are neglected.

I'm summer DD doesn't wear anything under her top. She's 2.5 and in winter wears those baby vest things that do up at the bum. I'm not sure whether she's too old for these but she looks nice with a white one under short sleeved top. I imagine she'd wear a tight vest under school uniform etc. I have no idea. I feel unprepared now

DS1 stopped wearing vests when he grew out of poppered ones. He always says he's hot even in just one layer so I don't really see the point in forcing one on him. I imagine DS2 will go the same way.

I haven't seen a glimpse of a vest on a child for a very long time. It doesn't seem to be done round here.

My dc wear vests until about year six.

My DDs are 10 & 7 and wore vests until a couple of winters ago. Dd1 thinks they're babyish but refuses to wear a jumper/cardi so she wears a short sleeved t shirt under her school polo and dd2 is just too lazy to put on an extra layer of clothing but does thankfully wear her sweatshirt.

Ds is stil in poppered vests and will prob wear regular vests or a tshirt under his clothes until he protests. Only in winter mind, he doesn't wear vests all year round, that would be weird

My DSS never wore vests and he definitely could not be described as neglected!

I'm not planning on putting my DC1 in vests after they get out of the baby vests either, waste of time washing them and surely a top, jumper and good coat is enough in British winters. They say to dress them in the same amount of layers as you have on yourself and I don't wear vests.

DD1 has refused to wear a vest since she was born (she grumped and grizzled if she was faintly too hot and had full blown hysterics at the sight of a snow suit.

DD2 continued to win unwarned hand-me-down vests through until DD1 started wearing crop tops and bras Y5/6ish.

DD2 would wear a vest if it was cold and wore vests or cropped tops as the mood took her from Y4-Y6

Both DDs now sometimes wear adult style vests under their senior school blouses as the heating is crap. (Despite the fact it's been repaired).

If you wear (thermal) vests (I mean the whole family, not just DCs) you will save vast numbers of s in heating costs. They make an amazing difference.

I haven't worn a vest as underwear since I was six, following a big tantrum with Mum in M&S as we shopped for the new school year after a vest-less summer. DCs never had vests once they progressed beyond the poppered stage. School uniform polo plus sweat-shirt/cardigan always seemed more than enough layers in central-heated classrooms, not to mention the peer-pressure when changing for PE! We went through a brief crop-top phase, but soon moved on to trainer bras, and the only vests any of us wear now are strappy summer tops.

I'm 35 and always wear a vest or vest style top.
My back gets cold.

DC's all wear vests too. Can't imagine them stopping anytime soon TBH.
DH wears one too.

Mine generally do in the depths of winter as we live rurally so it gets cold, our house is quite chilly and they are outdoors a lot in all weathers.

This winter they are less keen but it's not been as cold as usual so I'm not too concerned. Ds3 runs out of school and strips down to just his polo shirt most days so I'm assuming he's not too cold

I must have neglected all my dc then, They never wore vests after the age of 2 1/3 -3.

My two wear vests. 6yo asks for one if I don't put one out and the 2yo doesn't have a choice. She's still in poppers but once she's too big for those she'll go into normal vests. They come off when the weather gets warm.

DS doesn't wear vests, he's 7 now and was probably 5 when he last wore them. He does have thermal long john trousers for under his clothes when it's snowing though.

I think he'd get too hot in a vest. My mum would probably make him wear one though, she's always trying to put more layers on us lol

dd is 10 and hasnt worn a vest for years but has started wearing cropped vest tops as she has started to develop beasts. ds is 7 and also hasnt worn vests for years. Neither of them own any vests

My dd refused point blank to wear them after the age of 4. She is a hot child though, she also refuses to wear hats gloves or scarves. I have given up trying to make her now. She's 7

Mine stopped wearing vests when they stopped wearing nappies. So at about 2. They're 10 and 8 now and until DD starts having a crop top and then bra doubt either will wear anything under their clothes

i am tall, 33 and wear vests from primark as they are really long and cheap ds 2.7 wears lovely long sleeved thermal vests from m&s atm and has some sleeveless vests also from m s. he is too long for poppered vests.
i think your suggestion that children without vests is probably a bit extreme, but i do remember ds and i wrapping up in several layers hats scarf gloves etc and we saw a little girl in just a t shirt and open coat, no vest, jumper etc, must admit thought it was a bit odd, especially as her mum was well wrapped up, suppose she might have undressed herself?
