Talk to me about vests!

My oldest is five and hasn't worn a vest since he was under two. If it is cold he wears a long sleeved t-shirt under a jumper. I just read on another thread about it being mentioined (on here?) that children without vests have been described as neglected, and actually remember my neighbour, whose children are 8 and 10, wearing vests. So do your children wear vests? At what age did you stop? Are vests fundementally important? It had not occured to me to buy vests beyond the age of two and the baby vests with the poppers.

I don't recall wearing a vest as a child, but I usually wear a camisole now!

Dromedary · 12/02/2014 12:51

Children don't wear them so much now because people overheat their houses so much. If your house is at 21 degrees (warm summer weather), someone who wears a vest will overheat. We keep our house relatively cool, and wear vests. Saves a lot on heating and makes going outside more comfortable. I've noticed that shops now sell very few genuinely warm clothes (eg wool jumpers and warm coats), especially for girls and women.

I have the thermostat on at 16 or so and we don't wear vests. Maybe we are just hardy Grin

My 2 never wore vests, even when they were tiny babies. I just don't see the point of them. They wore a coat outside and a top and cardigan is plenty warm enough inside! They sometimes did wear a button vest in a colour under dungarees or a sleeveless dress but only ever one layer ifswim?!

I have a friend who puts vests on her babies at NIGHT, under their sleepsuit!

Madonnaquintessential · 12/02/2014 13:26

My dd was born in spring last year- the summer was a heatwave so she rarely wore vests. I remember a friend asking me why she didnt have a vest on (it was aigust and boiling) I said it was far too hot surely!? She just shrugged her shoulders and said that her dc always wears one and every other baby she knows does- it is used to keep nappy in place. I felt awful and like the worst, clueless mother in the wrld! It is only now I look back and laugh at it... I mean it was roasting! It would have been cruel to have pit her in one, not neglect not having her in one!
Now, as its winter, dd is always in a vest. I do not think there is a set rule on them though... Its more common sense- if its cold use one, if very hot prob best not to bother! :)

Pascha · 12/02/2014 16:23

I put DS2 in a vest at night, under his jammies. No way am I giving him any opportunity at all to get to his nappy if I can avoid it!

CrazyOldCatLady · 12/02/2014 18:07

Mine always wore vests as babies; in fact, DD was born in June and the summer was a hot one so she spent a lot of time just wearing a vest. At night she wore a vest and was swaddled in a muslin because it was the lightest thing we could find!

Now that she's nearly 4 she still wears them as she feels the cold. DS is still in nappies and therefore poppered vests but I'd say once we start toilet training him we'll dispense with the vests entirely as he detests being overheated.

neversleepagain · 12/02/2014 19:26

Mine wear vests a night under their sleepsuits.

DC are 16 months are are always in vests (unless very hot summer weather). I plan to keep them in vests as long as they will wear them. We wore vests until we went to secondary school.

findingherfeet · 12/02/2014 20:54

Oh I loooove a vest, was actually panic stricken when DD outgrew the long sleeve popper variety, I like her to be tucked in - no drafts please, much to the bemusement of my friends with similar age kids. But unless it's really hot I don't wanna see baby bellybuttons Grin

I agree with another poster about thermal vests, fabulous items...but I am a little vest obsessed!

RoganJosh · 12/02/2014 20:58

Mine stopped wearing them as they potty trained but the eldest was cold at school as they have the door open a lot and we bought her some.

Other two tend to wear long sleeved tshirt and tank top, short sleeved over long sleeved tshirt or a fleece or sweatshirt on its own.

No vest doesn't necessarily = cold.

findingherfeet · 12/02/2014 21:00

And DD always has a (thermal Shock) vest under her Jim jams at night...unless it's summer and even then it might be a little sleeveless number! Haha oh dear from posts above I can see perhaps this is not common practice xx

SpookedMackerel · 12/02/2014 21:00

My two wear vests (6 and 2) - I just think it is nice to have an extra warm, tucked-in layer. I wear vests too, I'm always freezing without them. Don't wear them in hot weather, but in winter I wear a vest, top, and jumper, and so do the kids. Dd 1 even wears one under her pyjamas.

MerryMarigold · 12/02/2014 21:02

Mine don't wear vests unless it is freezing. I would put one on in a thick frost but there's probably been 2 here all Winter. (They own a couple each). It's hard enough to persuade dd into a cardigan neglected child.

harverina · 12/02/2014 21:14

Dd1 is almost 4 and still wears vests. On really cold days she wears thermal vests. I just think kids are cosier wearing a vest. Dd1 even wears a vest to bed in the winter.

During the summer she doesn't wear vests as much - I but thinner cotton ones for cooler summer days.

I wouldn't say children without vests are neglected! Though perhaps children who are genuinely neglected are less likely to wear vests?! Who knows, it's not necessarily the first thing I would look for!

harverina · 12/02/2014 21:14

Oops I said vests a lot of times sorry!

MistletoeBUTNOwine · 12/02/2014 21:15

Dd (8) wears vests; even now she's wearing crop tops Grin short sleeved thermal ones if v cold.

stealthsquiggle · 12/02/2014 21:22

I never wore or even owned a vest as a child, and it never occurred to me to get them for my DC - school is warm and they don't need them. However, DD did demand vests at one stage because "everyone else" wore them - so fine, I bought her some, which she has now outgrown and not asked for replacements, and DS is going through a chilly stage and bizarrely is not allowed to wear T-shirt under his school shirt, so I have got him a few vests and he wears one if he is feeling chilly but not every day by any means.

It wasn't until I saw it on MN that it even occurred to me that anyone considered vests necessary or the lack of them an indication of neglect.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 12/02/2014 22:00

DH insists it is child cruelty to make a child wear a vest after they have started school Hmm

I only put one on DS if it's really cold. It's been pretty mild this year, I think he's worn one once or twice? He wears them more often to bed instead of a PJ top.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 12/02/2014 22:01

And I think maybe I should start wearing one because I am a total wuss and get freezing!

Eletheomel · 12/02/2014 22:06

I was under the impression that everyone put a vest under a sleepsuit (or else the metal poppers would be against the babies skin)?

Mind you, I live up north, so maybe its just the cold north where babies will have a vest on under a sleepsuit...

ThreeBeeOneGee · 12/02/2014 22:08

DD doesn't wear vests because she doesn't feel the cold. DS2 (nearly 12) and DS3 (9) wear cotton vests. DS1 (nearly 14) wears underarmour / base layers.

TwittyMcTwitterson · 12/02/2014 22:14

PP I also thought vests always went under babygro things. It just looks right.

I never gave it a second thought and this got me concerned so I spoke about it to my boss who has 6yr old DD. He thought it was crazy to even discuss it. If they want a vest they wear one, if they don't then they don't. Can't say fairer than that Wink

Artandco · 12/02/2014 22:15

Both of mine wear one day and night. I still wear a vest. Our house is at 21 degrees also...

Maybe we all just feel the cold. Ds1 (4) has gone to sleep in a vest, long sleeve Tshirt, flannel checked pj top, flannel pj bottoms, bed socks, a Canadian goose winter duvet, and the heating on. Ds2 (2) is currently in vest, all in one fleece pjs, a hot microwaveable frog and is asleep next to dh in bed under mounds of duvet ( whilst poor dh is trying to work)

NearTheWindmill · 12/02/2014 22:22

I think DS refused by about 6 or 7. DD wore them until she needed a mini bra (at about 9 Sad). If they are warm why is a vest necessary? FWIW my 19 year old started wearing a coat this winter Grin. Eventually they come to their senses and then you send them to NZ for a gap year where it is warm Sad. I misses him and doesn't care if he wears a vest or not - would just like to be folding his panty twice a week when they come out of the dryer Sad

NearTheWindmill · 12/02/2014 22:23

I meant pants. Or teeshirts, socks, jeans, jumpers, etc.
