This is minus Cod's expert advice at the moment as she's busy (see boot camp thread)
We've been going a week (ds is 2.4) and he's doing ok I think. Had a poo in the potty last night - first (in the right place) of the week! and and an all dry day on Friday - Grin Weekend was not so good as we were visiting people both days but he was still pretty good considering. How is everyone else doing?

Hi everyone. My DD is doing fantastically well and we're now happy to go out in trainer pants (cloth ones) and armed with travel potty. The thing is I tried 'normal' pants yesterday and she weed in them in about 10 mins. I asked her why and she said because they felt like a nappy. Any ideas? Do I keep her in the trainer pants for a while - they're big and crinkly?

PetitFilou1 · 26/06/2006 08:42

Tamsino Are the pants a snug fit? Maybe try a size bigger (you are supposed to do that anyway apparently so they can get them up and down easier themselves) I did laugh at 'they felt like a nappy' though because she obviously knows that even if they did feel like a nappy they are pants! Could you get her some character pants that she'd love so much she wouldn't want to wee in them???
Tango glad things are going better - pg with toddler in tow is hard....... Although I'm quite jealous of you having got it out the way as training with a 10 month old in tow is a bit complicated at times.
Ds had two dry days Thurs-Fri we are getting better! Seems to be feeling the poo coming too now but hasn't managed a potty deposit yet..fingers crossed for this week (next week we are on hols for two weeks 6 hours in car to Cornwall aaaaaargh) so hope he's pretty much cracked it by then at least on the wee front.

Hello, hope you don't mind me joining! Have started potty training my son (3 in august) and the first 2 days were a nightmare - almost gave up but on day 3 he started yelling for the potty. He runs around in his t-shirt and big boys pants - should he be able to pull his pants down himself? It is always a bit of a rush to get his pants down so he doesn't have an accident - should this get any better?

Hi everyone

Thanks petitfilous. Yes, we have cat pants, dog pants and princess pants :-). She is very small and i've put her in 2-3s which are a bit big. I guess I'll just need to wait a while and hope she clicks next time we try. I also have a 6 hour cornwall trip next month - eek. I have bought a 'piddle pad' for the car seat.

Bozza - it will get better, but i moved the potty to the loo which meant i had an extra few seconds to catch dd and get her pants down.

bozzy · 26/06/2006 12:11

Thank you Tamsino - I started using the GF method but was soooo stressed putting DS on every 15 minutes... do you think it is a good idea trying the toilet instead of the potty or should I put the potty in the toilet first and then try the toilet? What have others experienced ? Do they like the toilet seat? I haven't left the house for a week (have a 9 month old daughter too) but do have some trainer pants.... trying not to be tempted by nappies!!!! If I was in supermarket and DS needed to go, what do I do????

tamsino · 26/06/2006 13:32

Bozzy, I use the potty when DD initiates and the big toilet when I want her to go, ie before nap, when she wakes up or we're about to go out. We have a padded seat and she's happy with that. For some reason when i put the potty in the downstairs loo, she goes and gets it, puts it in the living room and then goes but it gives me those precious seconds to get her pants down as she hasnt mastered that yet.

When we are out i have a potette travel potty which is great.

clairemow · 26/06/2006 13:39

Hi Bozzy - I rejected the GF method, as I couldn't bear to be in the house for a week! Would rather DS stayed in nappies FOREVER than spend that long all cooped up. Also, it's not realistic, as you have to go out at some point... Re. the supermarket, don't lots have toilets now? If not, you might just have to take a potty with you everywhere you go, I've seen loads of people doing that.

We had a good morning. I am being a wimp and took DS to a class in a nappy, but he went for a wee before we left in the potty, and after the class actually asked to go to the toilet, sat on the big loo (I had to hold him to stop him falling down!!), and did another. We did another one in a cafe as well later. I think he had weed in the nappy too during the morning, but didn't seem confused. Do you think it matters that I'm being so lax about it? Making a big fuss when he goes in a loo/potty seems to make him really happy, so I don't want to spoil his progress. Maybe next week when DH is on holiday we'll try the pants route....

bozzy · 26/06/2006 13:55

Hi again - thanks for the advice! Good idea about use of the loo, the problem is at the moment DS doesn't see to go when I ask him to (can be sitting for a long time) which is why I'm scared to go out... ie he won't go just before and prob won't go at supermarket before shopping... one way to find out I suppose! Yes, it isn't fun being cooped up in the house all day!!

tangox3 · 26/06/2006 15:15

Hi all. Things are going really well here.

Ds is going in the potty (naked) all the time without prompting and going in the travel potty when we're out too, most of the time (not naked, obviously!) We've moved the potty closer to the toilet too as his bladder control has improved.

He has a few probs getting the pants down still (grabs his shirt instead, or can only pull down the front) so am making a game of it to practice so it will all come to fruition soon!

I followed GF. Only on the first/second day (dependent on progress) do you have to put them on every 15 mins, and I went out on the third day and every day since then...she doesn't say you have to stay home for the whole week, just not do anything too major. I'd certainly feel confident enough to take him out for a day now, armed with "accident kit". I just remind him more often when out.

Am really pleased with how it's all going but know that we could get a "rebellion day" an time!

It's really great to read everyone else's successes, trials and tribulations!

clairemow · 26/06/2006 18:07

had a good day here too. Went to a class this morning and to friends' to play - did 3 wees, 1 on potty, 2 in the loo - but he did have a nappy on as well. This afternoon, we had to stay in so he's been in pants. Only one accident, but I have been reminding him at least every half hour - but he seems really excited about it.

Not sure what to do about nursery, as I don't think they could be pants up pants down every half hour or so!!!

tangox3 · 26/06/2006 22:32

Got too cocky and this afternoon, to and from the park, had 2 wees without him telling us. That'll teach me!

Must be a pants/nappy confusion issue I think, but we'll just have to bide our time and know that he'll get it eventuallly. He seems to be all right if not in the buggy and I can keep a close eye on him and his nether regions!

PetitFilou1 · 27/06/2006 13:26

Hello all
I THINK we may be on our way to cracking it ds had an entirely dry day at nursery yesterday (we are now just over two weeks in). All his wees on their toilet and one poo! He did have an accident on the way home but that was because he refused to wee at nursery before he came home even though we all knew he needed one (he was clutching his bits). Last night he woke up for wee at 3am even though he had a nappy on so I'm expecting to be woken up from now on.....hmmm ........ Bozzy no excuse having a 9 month old (I have a 10 month old)
Anyway I expect I'll get my comeuppance this evening when there is a load of washing to bring home.........

Hello! Having a bad day today as all accidents and none in potty (including poo) - my fault though as I have had two people in the house doing various quotes and causing a distraction. We are one week in but have been swimming every afternoon which means a swim nappy (and I'm sure he uses that opportunity..). Finding it hard not to get cross - am trying to teach him to pull his pants down too - he keeps trying his t-shirt and also from front but I guess practice makes perfect... hoping to take both DS and DD shopping on Thursday.. wish me luck!

PetitFilou1 · 27/06/2006 13:32

Bozzy how old is your ds? I'm not expecting mine to pull his own pants and shorts down yet (although trying to teach him) He's nearly 2.5. I can't believe you've managed to stay in for a week - I would have gone nuts. I managed two days and that was it, potty just comes everywhere with us!

Hi there, DS is 3 in August. We have just moved to Gibraltar and have the use of a communal pool which means we stay in every morning (so much to do at the house, have 9 month daughter who still needs her naps), DS has toys he hasn't played with in months, so easier to stay in. My son can run around outside etc and the weather is hot everyday - so it hasn't been toooo bad. We had bank holiday on Monday so couldn't start training until tuesday, and I spent Tuesday and Wednesday pulling my hair out! DS is sitting on the potty as we speak, doing a poo I think... (second one today) he initiated it - I think he got the message as I have started to get a bit cross with him - just lack of concentration on both our parts! I don't feel so bad if you think it is early to be dressing and undressing - it is just that I have pretty much done everything for him since he was born (ie feeding etc) as he has been happy for me to do it - I don't have my friends around who have all just finished potty training, to compare with!!

bozzy · 27/06/2006 13:51

Can I just ask, I have a travel potty. If I take it shopping and he wants to do a wee there is no way I would be able to get it out in time or find a toilet. He won't do it on demand (ie if I ask him to do a wee before we go out, he will quite happily sit on potty watching tv but won't do anything . How does it all work???

tamsino · 27/06/2006 14:37

Hi there,

My DD, 2.3 cannot pull her pants down yet.

I have the travel potty in my bag and if DD says se needs a wee, then ideally we go to the loos and get it out. She seems able to hold it in for a bit. However I got it out on the pavement the oter day as there was nowhere we could go - no-one batted an eyelid though!

bozzy · 27/06/2006 15:28

I will take DS and DD out on Thursday morning.. wish me luck!

sockmonkey · 27/06/2006 19:03

Hello. I am on day 2 of big boy pants with DS1. i could just cry. 7 sets of wet pants and not one wee in the toilet. I think i will leave DS2 in nappies till he is 10!! . he will be put on potty, only to come off and wet his pants 2 mins later. getting very frustrated with it all.

tamsino · 27/06/2006 19:18

good luck bozzy :-)

sockmonkey. can you leave him naked for a bit so he can see what happens when he wees

longwaytogo · 27/06/2006 20:44

OK ideas please - not really been doing this properly till yesterday when I left him without his nappy on and he did all wees on the potty. Put nappy on to go to playgroup to pick up dd and it was wet. This morning took nappy off after sleep and had numerous wees and poos on the potty so put trainer pants on him five mins before we went to playgroup and he immediatly wet them, changed him, by the time we got to playgroup he was sodden wet, brought him home took nappy off all wees and poos on potty so pleased with him, but the minute I put pants or clothes on him he wets them. He is doing so well but he can't run round in the nuddy forever can he

Ponka · 27/06/2006 23:31

Longwaytogo, if you want to just go for it then completely then I'd be brave and drop the pull - ups. That's what I've done. Aparently, it confuses them because they feel just like a nappy that you can wee in. DS has not once asked me for the potty but we have had one complete dry day and an average of about 1 accident a day (we are now on day 8/9). I just take him to the toilet/put him on the potty quite a lot and each time he wees for me. I'm hoping it will click soon and he'll be able to ask.

Ponka · 27/06/2006 23:35

Keep going, sockmonkey. When he gets one in the right place, make a big deal, lots of praise and maybe a sticker/chocolate, if you like. How old is he?

sockmonkey · 28/06/2006 07:51

he has just turned 3 Ponka. the problem is he never cared if his nappy was wet or dirty, and seems to feel the same way about his pants. might leave him pantless and see what happens. trouble is it's play group today. might have to put him some pull ups on just for that. i don't think its fair on him otherwise.
