This is minus Cod's expert advice at the moment as she's busy (see boot camp thread)
We've been going a week (ds is 2.4) and he's doing ok I think. Had a poo in the potty last night - first (in the right place) of the week! and and an all dry day on Friday - Grin Weekend was not so good as we were visiting people both days but he was still pretty good considering. How is everyone else doing?

bet you are sockmonkey! keep it up

day 6: after getting up he did a tiny wee in his potty; then later he started weeing on the floor and i sort of 'shouted' at him to go on his potty! so i think he stopped midstream (), sat down and did a big wee in the potty!!
an hour later another wee on the potty!!!
still all prompted ....
but nevertheless i think we are going in the right direction

sockmonkey · 06/07/2006 15:26

Argh. I have spoken too soon. We have had 3 accidents since yesterday tea time, I think it's because I have been putting pants on him, not leaving him to be a nuddy-bum.
He did really well while we were out shopping, and came home sat in DH's chair then peed. I had only just asked him if he needed to go too.

bozzy · 06/07/2006 15:39

My DS just seems happy to hold on until I ask him - maybe if he was desperate... I took a little loo seat with me shopping this morning so he happily sat on the loo with that - just in time as MIL arrives this pm and knows nothing about it so will be a surprise... she has been wanting me to potty train him since he was 18months

you lot are doing so well!!!!!!!

day 7: ds is ill. doesn't eat doesn't drink doesn't play - so not him
BUT he still managed to do all 3 wees he had all day into his potty (with prompting but still!)

Reece · 06/07/2006 20:15

SusiS Arh poor little one. It's great that even though he is unwell he still managed his 3 wees into the potty.

I was wondering how you were getting on. No poos yet? Try not to worrt too much. my pals DS didn't do a number 2 for over a week once and he was fine.

We had 3 wee accidents yesterday and 2 of them were at my pals house!!

He is doing really well though, 4 days at pre-school and dry every time. Has done poos into potty for last 3 consecutive days. I am so pleased about that as I was expecting the poo problem to go on and on. I think the fact that I didn't make an issue out of his poo accidents may have something to do with the turnround as he can be very stubborn and likes to do things his way when he is ready. Don't they all eh!

SusiS · 06/07/2006 21:06

lol at being 'stubborn' - don't we all know about that

thanks for asking

well, he didn't have a poo all night/day - but then again he didn't eat much the last 2 days.
before that he had 2 poos in the potty - so knows about it!
but normally he does them in the night into his nappy ... so guess i was quite lucky so far

SusiS · 06/07/2006 21:08

i reckon your ds is almost perfect now!
i mean dry at preschool 100% AND poos in potty for the last 3 days ...
i guess there will always be AN accident!

Reece · 06/07/2006 21:31

Thanks SusiS. Hope your lo gets better soon.

I reckon DS is doing well at pre-school because the girls there are brilliant!!! What would we do without these people? They keep an eye on him and take him to the toilet etc. He seems to have improved since going there so I'm delighted.

tamsino · 07/07/2006 07:43

Hi everyone. Started with Dd about 3 weeks ago and it all went great. A bit tricky getting her into pants but we're almost there now. This is she only has about 1-2 accdents a week but yesterday she had 3 which is quite unusual. Is this normal that they can off days if they are tired/under the weather?

SusiS · 07/07/2006 08:35

guess that's quite possible! after all that's a rather new skill they've learnt. and i reckon if they are excited/tired/ill might not be on the top of the list ... keep it up - you are doing a great job!!

we had a great success today already!
first thing when we get up is on the potty!
tiny wee ... well pleased!
but he kept sitting back on the potty (his doing!!) and did another big wee. and kept going onto the potty ...

then i had to do a well nr.2 and he saw that and ran back inside and 2 min later he came to me with his potty and showed me a huuuuuuge poo
'woheyyyyyyy'
AND he wanted his pants back on.

i hardly tell him to sit on his potty anymore (only if i realise that it's well overdue) - i more ask him if he needs one and make him answer yes or no!

Reece · 07/07/2006 08:57

Yes Tamsino - I think its perfectly nomal for them to have accidents when they are tired/ill. I reckon they lose concentration or something.
You are doing great if she only has a few accidents a week.

SusiS - Well done!!!! A poo in the potty is such an achievement in my eyes as we had been having a problem with that issue. Seems to be sorted now fingers crossed.
I've noticed that my DS keeps nipping into the potty a lot and doesn't do anything for a while when he can feel that a poo is coming. This has happened the last 3 days and each time it is follwed eventually with a poo in the potty .

mazzarella · 07/07/2006 10:49

Hiya,
Can i join this thread.

I have just started potty training my 1.9 yr old daughter.
I thought it was way to early but she has other ideas! She kept taking her nappy off and weeing all over the house, i caught her just as she was about to do it again and said no, she kept trying to take it off so i said do you want a wee and she said yes.
I went and dug out my sons old potty and she just weed on it and kept going back for more wees.
As it has been nice weather she has been running round naked mostly and weeing on her potty most of the time the odd one goes on the floor!
If she is wearing jst pull ups or a nappy she takes them off herself and has a wee but if she is wearing clothes she just totally forgets and wees in her nappy.
We havent started with poos yet they just go in the nappy or floor!

mumofabby · 07/07/2006 11:07

Hi, I'm desparate for some advice, my little girl is 3 in September and still won't use the potty or the toilet. She will quite often take her pull ups off for up to 2 or 3 hours at a time and will hold on to her wee until I put a fresh pull up on. If I broach the subject of the potty or the toilet she just goes into one or uses her favourite word 'NO'. She does sometimes ask to wear knickers but usually wets them. Help, any advice I feel a bit of a failure and feel it's something I have or have not done.

Reece · 07/07/2006 13:03

Hi mazzarella. Wow! Thats great that she has been using the potty for her wees at such a young age. I would be interested to know how she progresses because people are always going on about kids should be 2.6/3 before you even start. I say - Go with your instinct and follow the signs that they give you. She is obviously showing the right signs.

mumofabby - If you really want to crack the potty training I would only use pull-ups for naps and bedtime to avoid confusion. I started DS in pants but it was a nightmare. Accidents all over the house.... At day 3 I went cold turkey and he still had accidents but then the penny started to drop and he started to wee in the potty. I kept the keep the potty close to him at all times. He spent a good bit of time watching TV and kept jumping on the potty.

I was reminding ds every 15mins and after a few days the pressure became too much for him so I laid off on the reminders a bit and things really improved. I am no expert on this and am only into week 3 myself but they do turn a corner at some point. It's amazing.

Use a sticker chart, loads of encouragement and praise when they use the potty (even when they sit on it is a start as ds wouldn't for 2 days). My ds is very stubborn and I resorted to a small treat after every wee/poo in potty. It worked wonders... Good Luck.

mazzarella · 07/07/2006 13:37

She still has a bottle and uses it like a dummy so is always drinking and takes a bottle of milk and a bottle of juice to bed with her, and she finishes both bottles.
I am always washing her bedding as she wees so much in the night, but for about a week now her bed has been dry.
It is more me asking her do you need a wee and she will have one but she does also go by herself.
She was playing in the conservatory today nked and came running in quickly and jumped on her potty and did a massive wee.
And also today she was standing there (naked) a just started to wee on the floor but she stopped it and held it in then jumped on her potty to finish it which i though was quite good.
Any way i'll give it a go and keep it up and see how she goes.
I'll let you know how we get on though.
Shes at playschool now so not expecting her to use potty there.

mumofabby · 07/07/2006 13:49

Hi Reece, thanks for the advice. I'll give it a go and see what happens. I guess she will only do things in her own time. Thanks again.

sockmonkey · 07/07/2006 17:59

mumofabby, i agree with reece. you just have to brave it. My DS1 has just gone 3, and did NOT want to use a potty or the toilet. By the end of day 2 after 9 pairs of wet pants I was ready to give up, but on third day he got the idea. I gave praise for sitting on potty, and practically had a party the first time he did a wee. It's stressful, but worth it.

mumofabby · 07/07/2006 23:14

Hi Sockmonkey, thanks for the advice and support . I think you're both right I am just going to have to brave it. I am going to start tomorrow and try not to get too stressed about it. Me being stressed about it is probably making it worse. Thanks again.

SusiS · 08/07/2006 20:00

day 9: yesterday evening just when i was to get thim to put him to bed ds actually got me the potty and said it too! i ignored it and thought it's only a tactic to stay up a bit longer!!! yeah right, i should listen to him!!! 2 min later there was a big poo in his nappy (already changed for the night) - guess that threw everything
tiny wee first thing in the morning in the potty!
then a big accident - and another one ...
then a potty wee - then we went out to a children event - and there i put him on the potty and he did a wee for me (well pleased)
but later at home he did a poo in his pants (first one for us!)
so somehow a step back????

Mazzarella · 09/07/2006 08:01

Well here's how we got on yesterday...

Woke up full soggy nappy, came down got naked and she had all her wees on her potty in the morning excpet one that went on the floor!
We had to nip out so nappy on and took potty with us, one wee in nappy and 3 in potty while we were out.
Came home and got naked again, using the potty sometimes of own accord but mostly when asked if she needs a wee.
She was standing naked and started to be, she paniced quickly held in it ran to potty and finished it on potty! Thought that was good!!
One poo in potty one on floor.
SHe weed in nappy when woke from sleep and the rest of the days wees went in the potty.
Not bad considering shes not 2 till end september.

Ponka · 09/07/2006 21:21

Hi everyone. Sounds like there's been a lot of sucess for a lot of you recently. It's been ages since I've posted. It's going well here. We've not had an accident since a week last Wednesday, wee or poo. The problem is that I'm the one doing the reminding still so really he's not potty trained, is he? He can tell me when he needs a poo but doesn't tell me when he needs a wee. I keep taking him to the loo every hour or so and we've kind of set into this happy half way point.

What do you think ladies? Should I stick with it like this and not upset the apple cart or should I stop reminding him and see what happens next?

Reece · 09/07/2006 22:21

Go on Ponka be brave!!! He might have a few accidents at first but that might be all before the penny drops that using the potty is now his responsibility.

Ponka · 09/07/2006 23:08

Yeah. Cheers Reece. I'll be brave. I've got a few days coming up soon with nothing planned so I can just see what happens at home.

Mumofabbey, have you tried the following?

  • Sitting her on the potty with nappy on.
  • Tying sitting on it in with some sort of game (I did seat for a pretend picnic when DS was smaller) no pressure to wee in it. Just to get used to it and not be scared. We also had a potty for his teddy, Mr. Tiger, when we started, which was a small bowl.
  • Bribery . Don't knock it for potty training. I used chocolate for 3 or 4 days when I just went for it with pants and no nappies and phased it out no problem. Stickers are also good, I hear.
  • Finally, you just have to set aside a week and go for it with no more nappies.... ever (oh, except for sleeping at night time). I'd personally be worried about starting with a child who refuses to sit on the potty completely because they perhaps aren't ready in themselves?
SusiS · 10/07/2006 07:40

hey ponka
day 11: had a wee in the potty earlier - prompted again!
just like you ponka: no idea how to deal with that! - on sunday i wasn't feeling to well (have a bad cold) -so i sort of let ds get on with it. accident after accident ....
well guess, keep going!

SusiS · 10/07/2006 12:09

went to the park earlier - with potty in tow of course! - half way through he actually asked for it?!?!?! - but i am not sure if it was because he sort of didn't know what else to do. he was watching other kids playing and seemed sort of just wandering off not knowing what to do ... - but hey, i count it as a good sign

then later after i've put him down for his nap he called me about 5min on. because it was really loud and persistand i saw to him and he sort of put his hands over his middle and i asked if he needed a wee. and he said yes and really did one!!! not sure again if that was only tactics to stay up longer or genuine need
