DC's first trip to A&E - what was yours?

9 month old DS woke up at 4am screaming his little head off hysterically, rushed him to A&E to be diagnosed with... a stomachache! After a suppository painkiller he fell asleep in the car home.

Super relieved, although slightly embarrased.

What was your DC's first (and hopefully only!) trip to A&E for?

When DS had croup at about 15 months. He was rushed straight through and pumped with steroids, his breathing was so bad. Terrifying.

DS aged 3.9 decided to swallow a 5p. He got metal detected and was fine.

um, a cold ; admittedly this was on the specific advice of the GP, she was only 6 weeks old and she was quite poorly. Sent home with clean bill of health, thank god.

DS had an accident at my mum and dads, stopped breathing. Luckily Dh was there and gave him mouth to mouth while my mum phoned an ambulance. Dad just panicked as did I when I got the phone call at work.

Dd was much less dramatic. She bumped heads at school and needed sutures.

Err a few weeks old. He learnt to roll. Off the sofa onto the floor. Oops!!!

He seems to be okay now at 14.

We had quite a few visits to A&E actually over the years!

DD was 4mo and the GP called an ambulance as she had bronchiolitis and her oxygen sats were low.

DS was 5mo and had had a virus just like the rest of us. But he got much worse very quickly, struggling to breathe, floppy, blue lips etc. Was very poorly on admission. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and in hospital for a week.

Only trips for both of them btw.

My sister was spinning DS around by holding onto his wrists and pulled his elbow. Had to go to A+E to click it back into place. DS was 2 and didn't cry as much as my sister did!

I pulled DD's elbow out a few weeks ago when crossing the road

Had to start a thread on here to ask what to do - everyone said A&E, so we went. Doctor was very nice and said it was really easy to do, toddlers have quite loose joints - he gave it a quick twist and she was instantly fine, phew!

DS, about 18 months, had a cold and was getting more and more wheezy. Ended up taking him to the ooh gp (which was in the same place as a and e) and we had to stay in hospital for the night. I thought they would say I was being a bit pfb and send me home and was really shocked we had to stay in. I remember the doctor kept coming to check DS and give him his puffer saying, "You're going to be here a while you know," and me just agreeing and thinking oh we'll be out for tea. It was only when they wheeled a cot in for DS that it sunk in that he was actually a bit poorly.

12 day old dd somehow got viral gastroenteritis and was in hospital for a week. I think she probably got it on the maternity ward when I stayed in after my section. scary time tho, seeing such a wee baby on a drip ad hooked up to machines

DD2 got taken at 6 weeks because she wouldn't feed and was crying constantly

by the time we got seen she decided she would feed, doc walked in as I was feeding her and said 'so that's why she was crying, she was hungry!'

he then checked her over, told me it was a virus and said he was more concerned about her eczema (had been creaming her up since she was 2 weeks old so I was hrdly neglectful!)

DD1 made it to 5 before her first trip to A&E when she shoved a bead up her nose to see if it would fit!

dd1 - mystery virus, aged 14mo. Temp of 41 not resolving, Febrile convulsions requiring IV lorazapam. 2 day admission, no idea what caused it.

when dd (9) was 18 months we were planting some tomato plants and she somehow caught her hand on the support stick, was deep and wide so off to A and E, she fell asleep on way there, she had it stitched and she now has a scar between her thumb and index finger.

dd: she was 4.5 and jumped off a wall at a friend's birthday party. Spiral fracture of the tibia, 9 weeks in plaster. Poor girl, she'd only just started school. She hasn't had to go again, although she did have a head wound stitched at the gp last summer and had a nasty concussion.

ds1: hasn't been to a&e yet, despite being both reckless and accident prone. It's a miracle really

ds2: he was 16 months and got his thumb caught in the back end of the patio doors. The wind blew the doors closed and crushed his thumb. It swelled up massively but wasn't broken... apparently they have flexible bones at that age thank god. He hasn't been to a&e since that either.

DD 5 months just started solids. Blood spurting out of her anus plus diorrhea. Found out at hospital that it was a bug rather than something more serious, ... and that I had the same bug when I vomited all over the ward. We were sent home pdq before we could infect anyone else.

Ds2 9 days old. After telling every midwife I spoke to from the day he was born that DS wasn't feeding properly and being ignored. He became increasingly weaker and was vomiting up bright yellow bile. I rang the emergency midwife who told me I wasn't feeding him enough even though I told her he wouldn't feed. Dh was working away and I was on my own with a tiny baby and a 2.6yr old.

Dh came home and before he had his coat off I told him we had to take DS to hospital. The staff at Alder Hey were wonderful and sorted him out over the next week. It was discovered that he had a bacterial infection and was very dehydrated by the time we got him to hospital.

I always think if he had been born in a third world country or a past generation he wouldn't have survived.

DD1was referred by GP due to her crying and crying in a way that was very disturbing whilst she had a bad cold, she has ear issues so GP knew her quite well and knew she did not usually make such a commotion so sent to check oxygen saturation levels. It was all fine.cage was under 2.

DD2 was 2 and stopped walking, cried hysterically if made to out weight on her legs, again referred by GP turned out to be reactive arthritis following a viral infection.

DD1 2 and a bit years old, swallowed a £1 coin but it was stuck at top of throat so we ended up being blue lighted to another hospital. By the time she was xrayed again it had gone to her stomach :)

DD2 was about 6 weeks old, lying on floor and dog kind of stumbled over her and scratched her across face and eye. Took her in to check eye was not damaged but she was fine.

Was back there with DD2 just two days ago with a pulled elbow from (very gently!) lowering her off a step by her arms! Pleased to see ofthe pulled elbows on here :)

Those are the only three times we've been though!

Wow, so much variety! And so scary.

In the past 24 hours DS:
cut his nose (looks worse than it is... it looks horrible!)
went to A&E
contracted a very snotty cold.

It's been an eyeopener for us!

dc1 just a year old, climbing some furniture, knocks out tooth. a&e dr just sticks it back in and it didn't die.
dc2 2y runs and fall onto furniture, slits ear in half, needed many many steri strips.

DS1: Penicillin allergy. His head swelled up to an amazing size yet he smiled the whole time.

DS2: 3 weeks old with Bronchitius. Although felt as if i was being Psb (precious second born!)

DS1 fell out of his highchair in Madeira while we were on holiday, he was concussed and passing out and was rushed to A&E without us. He was 9 months old and we were terrified. We arrived at A&E to find him strapped to heart monitors but fine. It was the worst few hours of my life and I vowed I would never have any more DC as obv was an unfit mother. Plus we were in the mountains, so the ambulance had to travel miles to find us, then he was taken via another ambulance to Funchal.

Not that it's scared me, no not at all
