DC's first trip to A&E - what was yours?

9 month old DS woke up at 4am screaming his little head off hysterically, rushed him to A&E to be diagnosed with... a stomachache! After a suppository painkiller he fell asleep in the car home.

Super relieved, although slightly embarrased.

What was your DC's first (and hopefully only!) trip to A&E for?

DS hasn't been to A&E in his own right yet (3y) but came a few times between 8-16 weeks old for my mastitis/fistula to be aspirated. He was angelic and all the nursing staff cooed.

I do wonder whether the a/bs I had for mastitis passed through my bm and have caused/triggered his penicillin allergy though.

DS aged 3 - pea up nose

MotherOfNations · 28/09/2012 22:31

Dd2 got a penny stuck in her throat. The xray was crazy looking. Dd3 got her finger tip chopped off by a heavy fire door -My fault-

Ds1 first went at 13 months with brochilitus, since then has had several trips for asthma attacks and also broken arm and collar bone after some ambitious climbing frame moves, is both reckless and accident prone sadly. Ds2 and dd have never had to go ( touches wood).

MonsterBookOfTysons · 28/09/2012 22:35

Ds 3 weeks old, Pyloric Stenosis, got transferred from Northampton General to Leicester royal infirmary, was there 4 days and ds had an operation.
Dd has never been a&e, she is 2 years old on Monday.

Pancakeflipper · 28/09/2012 22:42

DS2 - breathing issues, 15 months old. I knew something was seriously wrong when the receptionist didn't take any details but rushed us past the waiting room straight into a cubicle and a Doctor with 3 nurses ran in.

DS1 - head injury. He fell forehead first at school from a great height and they took him to hospital. That was a phone call that made my world stop momentarily.

We have open access to CAU (children's a and e) and we've been bluelighted five or six times. Nearly lost her on one occasion. Those are all seizure related

However first non seizure trip was after she fell running for her lunch about 19mo, split her chin open, I completely lost the plot sobbing etc and rang DH in a state. He told me to ring gp, gp sent us to a&e for gluing. Nurse asked if it was her first visit because i seemed quite relaxed by then. Both DD and I thought that was hilarious.

AnxiousElephant · 28/09/2012 22:42

I've had a few illness to minor injury ones with both dc - all viral Smile
Most memorable was dd2 age 2.6y in the middle of HV training Grin

bonkersLFDT20 · 28/09/2012 22:42

We managed 13 years without a trip to A&E.

Someone trod on DS's head in a rugby match. Much blood and a horrid flappy bit. Urgggg. Child + head injury = seen very quickly. Glued it back together and was fine.

It was Mother's Day so me and the teen had a few hours together Smile

AnxiousElephant · 28/09/2012 22:43

fracture!! That wasn't a dramatic pause btw, forgot to say why! Grin

EndoplasmicReticulum · 28/09/2012 22:47

Son 1 - fell off our bed at 18 months old, broke his leg.

Son 2 hasn't been yet. Note the "yet". I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 28/09/2012 22:48

Dd was 4 and had a rash that didn't disappear when under a glass, it wasn't meningitis but something called HSP. Age had to go back when her kidneys showed signs of damage and got referred to evalina children's hospital. (she's fine now 4 years later :) )

Ds was 8mo with an awful ear infection, high temp that wouldn't come down and had gone floppy. They admitted him and put him on iv antibiotics, the doc put the thing in his ear to have a look and the infection 'burst' all over the doc. His temp immediately returned to normal and he was like a different child.

Not the last time we were in a+e unfortunately!

Flojo1979 · 28/09/2012 22:52

Salt overdose c/o the grandparents!

Debs75 · 28/09/2012 22:52

DD1, 18 months old fell down the stairs and I panicked and called the ambulance. 4 hours of obs and fine. The first of many and the last was last week after falling over and fracturing and gouging her elbow. A huge wound covering and all bandaged up for a few weeks. She is 16 and has had many trips to A&E for trips and falls and meningitis scares.

DS, 7 years ran away and was found by police who took him as a precaution. The first time he needed treatment was at 9 years when he fractured his growth plate in his ankle. Not fun at all, he is autistic and the nurses wouldn't let him settle. he wanted his shoe back on they wouldn't let him, he had a tantrum. they let him then.

DD2, 15 months breathing problems, needed oxygen and a nebuliser and steroids so we had an overnight stay.

DD3, touch wood not yet, she is 25 months. She did however visit A&E at 3 days old after my first day caring for all 4 ended with dd2 falling off a coffee table and knocking herself out and my dmum going into a panic. Again obs and sent home. We did manage to scare a few neighbours who only saw me put a tiny baby in an ambulance.

EmmalinaC · 28/09/2012 22:52

Fortunately our next-door neighbour is a paediatrician! But I am Blush about the number of times we have got him out of bed in his 'jamas thereby avoiding a dash to A&E

Once we interrupted his family barbecue to lean over the fence and show him a muslin, shrieking 'look, look, it's green vomit!'

He said 'that's not vomit, it's snot. BabyLina has got a cold'.

Francagoestohollywood · 28/09/2012 22:56

Dd, had a high temperature at 4 days old. She was lethargic and stopped feeding. Got admitted for 4 days. Luckily, after tests, it turned out she had what the docs referred to as a cold.

I was a wreck though.

TodaysAGoodDay · 28/09/2012 23:02

DS had a febrile convulsion when he was 4 months. Cue hysterics on my part, and a 999 call. He got carted off to hospital and was there for 3 days. Turns out it was tonsillitis. All that fuss for a sore throat Blush

Thanks to Dolphin Ward at Kettering GH. (more)Blush

LynetteScavo · 28/09/2012 23:03

DS1 (3 yo) dislocated elbow. I was always dislocating my elbow as a child, so I wasn't that worried. Grin

DS2 (3yo) drank out of a bottle of calpol while I was changing DD's nappy. We eventually established he hadn't OD'd and were sent home.

DD (just turned 4yo) swollen eyes. She couldn't see but didn't fuss, bless her. We were sent over to the university hospital and were admitted, bloods taken ect, but it (eventually)turned out to be a reaction to virus. Smile I wasn't so happy a few days later when her throat began to swell at 2am. A dose of steroids soon sorted her out.

We have since been for banged head- never seen an egg like it!!!, - fingers trapped in electric garage door DS1 fainted in the waiting room, lol!, hives in the middle of the night etc, but never anything serious (touch wood!)

Nuttyprofessor · 28/09/2012 23:04

Age 11 anaphylaxis due to nut allergy. When I got to the hospital they were most concerned that they had lost his notes as it could not be true that a boy had never visited AandE

UsingAPsuedonym · 28/09/2012 23:22

Whooping cough at 3months. Terrifying

FizzyLaces · 28/09/2012 23:23

Stacey my wee brother had that (Henoch-Schonlein Purpura or HSP). I was looking after him while my Mum was at work (I was 9) and couldn't get his feet into his wellies as his ankles were so swollen so I phoned Mum at work and she came home and he was admitted to hospital. It was all a little disappointing as we were meant to be going down the woods to finish our den.

Haha. Imagine the outrage now, he would probably been taken into care. We lived on a farm where it was common for siblings to take care of each other.

My eldest also swallowed a 5p like someone above's child. She was told to go home and poo it out. Which she did then took it to show and tell. It was very shiney :)

My wee one was chasing her big sis in the snow and slipped smacking her head on a stone about 11 months and had to get it glued and has a tiny wee cute scar on her forehead.

There have been many others Hmm [badmother]

lorisparkle · 28/09/2012 23:24

DS1 9mnths ish - toppled over whilst sat on the bed - landed still on the bed but not using arm and crying. After painkillers it was fine but we got many visits asking us the same questions from different people and a phone call from HV later on. A few afterwards but worst was Grandad dislocating his elbow during rough and tumble play within a few minutes of arriving. Grandad was devastated.

DS2 not sure of first but worst was when we had left him with SIL for afternoon and evening returned home and at midnight he woke with a high temperature not responding to painkillers. Dr visited and said to take him in. Poor mite had a chest infection, throat infection and an ear infection. He was fine when we left him but I felt so guilty afterwards.

DS3 a couple of minor ones involving running into doors, tables, etc but worst when he shut thumb in hinge of door and top was hanging off. Lots of screaming and crying from DH, me and DS3 and a quick dash to our local A&E. They were lovely but could do nothing so had to go to the nearest city who were horrible, stuck it together, and all was well. He still has a funny nail

At one time we had had lots of minor visits to A&E in a short time and had a phone call and visit from health visitors as we had been flagged up for going to A&E so many times. I did explain we had three rather lively boys and an over concerned DH.

FizzyLaces · 28/09/2012 23:24

Thank fuck for the NHS. I hate the tories.

FizzyLaces · 28/09/2012 23:29

Sorry, hope I didn't kill this by making it political. Blush

whatinthewhatnow · 28/09/2012 23:54

ds started to eat a urinal cake in John Lewis when he was 18months old. I still can't think about it without . DH took him in to make sure he hadn't done himself a mischief. which he hadn't.
