DC's first trip to A&E - what was yours?

9 month old DS woke up at 4am screaming his little head off hysterically, rushed him to A&E to be diagnosed with... a stomachache! After a suppository painkiller he fell asleep in the car home.

Super relieved, although slightly embarrased.

What was your DC's first (and hopefully only!) trip to A&E for?

DD poured tea from my thermos on herself a few weeks ago (she's 4) scalded her chest. Thankfully we have had nothing more serious. DS tripped on a trip to the woods and fell head first onto a big stone. We got to A+E, by which time he seemed fine and there was a 3 hour wait, so we went home, and he was fine. I've only been twice in 32 years - once cut my finger open badly and had a stitch, once cat scratched my eye, which smarted a bit, but healed in a few days - I'm very lucky I think.

I held out until dc1 was 7 Smile. At that point, and with blood squirtin everywhere, I though perhaps it was time.....

dc3 first went when she was about 4 or 5, having had her hand shut in the car door. After some hours waiting in A&E, when we got to see the Dr, she turned and said "Which hand was it Mummy ?" Blush. Bless though, the lovely Army Nurses there made her up a special sling for some sympathy once we got home Smile

DS1 at around 18 months still had his bottle Blush and was running with it in his mouth. Just as I was saying "DS, take that out of your mouth," he tripped over his own feet and because of the position his mouth was in, his tooth went all the way through his bottom lip. Blood everywhere, a clean hole all the way through!

A+E were great, v quick, glued his skin back together, all was fine.

Oddly, I did the same thing to myself riding down a flight of stairs on a tricycle aged 3 so we have matching scars now!

DD2 managed minor accident to glue up a cut on her chin from slipping of the climbing frame as a toddler.
Then two visits 18 months apart, ending in theatre, to fix broken wrists.

Hasn't been to the GP since she was 5 months old (she's11)

Mine while DD1 has taken a whole array of niggles to the GP and never, touch wood, been to A&E

Wetthemogwai · 29/09/2012 01:15

Dds first time was tonight! How we lasted 18 months I don't know neglectful mother but it's only a virus stemming from her conjunctivitis so in a few days all will be fine!

After an hour or so of her running around, happy as larry I was heard to say 'you could at least try to look ill!' channels her dad and hangs head in shame Blush

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 29/09/2012 09:06

Aw fizzy poor you missing out on your woods trip Grin

We had rash, arthritis swelling, then kidney damage and 2 years of steroids! Boy that was fun Hmm

SecretCermonials · 29/09/2012 09:14

He rolled off the bed at about 9 months, he had a bump on the head at nursery at the end of last year, he broke his leg back in may all of which meant hospital.
The roll off the bed was my fault but the hospital were so nice didnt even lecture me!
The leg was the worst! Was only a green stick fracture but took us going twice for him to be X-rayed, and then I couldn't go in with him as i was in the early weeks of this pregnancy... Could hear him shouting for me Sad... He broke his leg with so little force as well literally sat down cross legged on concrete in a temper.

LibrariansMakeNovelLovers · 29/09/2012 09:18

DS1 - croup at around 12 months
DS2 - walloped his nose, blood everywhere big lump on one side 27 months
DD - ripped a load of skin off her big toe at 3.6 (I think that was her first time anyway, bit hazy with her)

Imnotaslimjim · 29/09/2012 09:37

DS was 1.10 and pulled a cup of tea over him (never forgiven DH for it) scalds to 12% of his body. Was horrible :( Thankfully (and very strangely) he hasn't got a single scar!

DD was just 9 weeks old, contracted bronchiolitis and stopped breathing. Scary, scary time, and it left her susceptible to chest infections every winter

Ds1 - pneumonia. After refusing to leave the GPs office an insisting he was poorly, kept being asked of he was my first child Hmm we were finally taken seriously when his breathing took a turn for the worse and transferred to hospital. He was 10 months old and ended up being in for 2 weeks as he developed double pneumonia.

Ds2 - croup repeatedly.

Ds3 - broncillitis and viral wheezes. Every time he gets a cold it goes straight to his chest so we go straight up to the ward now for nebulisers and steroids. He's 15 months old.

Indith · 29/09/2012 10:37

Ds1 managed to escape A&E so far.

Dd was probably 9/10 months ish I think, she was just cruising. I hadn't realised she could reach the middle of the coffee table and she ended up with a mug of fresh coffee all down her. Thankfully just one blistered area and she has no scar. Still feel terrible about it though, the horrible, horrible crying so utterly different from any other "I've fallen and hurt myself" crying :(. The next visit was when I she dislocated her elbow. I felt rather guilty on that one too because I had given her ibuprofena nd put her to bed Blush. Only took her in the morning because she still wasn't using her arm. Oops!

mejon · 29/09/2012 10:42

DD1 was around 6m old and she rolled off the bed. Seemed ok when we noticed that she wasn't able to weight-bear (bare?) on her arm so we took her to get checked out. They kept checking for head injuries despite our repeatedly telling them she fell on her arm not her head. She was fine - just a bit sore

DD2 was 13w old when I noticed a tiny tick on her arm. I got it off but unfortunately managed to leave part of it still embedded in her arm. NHS told me to take her to A&E where the doc proceeded to try and get it out with the largest non-pointy and utterly useless pair of plastic tweezers I've ever seen. He failed then tried to scrape it out with a needle. Poor little DD was quite unfazed by it all. Not sure if the bits did all come out but we kept and eye on it and it healed ok.

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme · 29/09/2012 10:53

DS1 high temp + me being pfb: he was given ibuprofen and a script for antibiotics and sent home. Can;t remember how old he was, must have been a couple of months.

DS2 at 2 weeks' old, high temp. Rang maternity ward (I'd only just been discharged after mastitis), they said bring him in. He ended up being hospitalised for 4 days to be sure it wasn't a bacterial infection. After countless test (including a spinal tap Sad), it turned out to be a virus (probably caught on the maternity ward) and we were finally allowed to go home.

Felt slightly embarrassed with DS1, completely terrified with DS2.

kate2boysandabump · 29/09/2012 10:59

DS1 fell of the bed and landed head first on a phone charger at about 9 months old.
He has been back since for a broken leg (3 places OUCH), a mystery virus, croup, smashing his 2 front teeth in and having to have them relocated and for me accidentally hitting him in the head with a casserole dish Blush Poor thing, he's been admitted every time.

DS2 has never been to A+E, he's barely ever been to the GP either.

Coincidentally DH had never been to A+E, but I was banned from anymore x-rays in my teens as I'd had too many. I think we can see that ds1 has taken after me Grin

MrFlibble · 29/09/2012 11:02

DS has so far made it to the grand old age of 5 and a half without needing A&E care.

DD was 2 weeks old when took to A&E in an ambulance with difficulty breathing. We then spent a week on a swine flu infested childrens ward. Sad

LottieJenkins · 29/09/2012 11:06

Wilf managed three different casualties in six months..........Blush
First was swallowing a ball bearing whilst we were staying with my stepson in Yorkhire. That was a trip to the Airdale where Wilf made friends with a man handcuffed to a policelady who had a teetowel wrapped round his hand. My stepson hid behind a magazine!! Grin
Second was falling off the top of the Climbasourus at the Dinosaur Park. I had literally turned my back for a minute and he climbed up and fell off! That was a blue light trip to Norwich.
Third was swallowing a hearing aid battery. That was a trip to Ipswich on a very busy Friday night!!
I am a good mother honestly!!Blush

pumpkinsweetie · 29/09/2012 11:09

When my pfb was newborn she was running a slight very slight temp & had funny looking poo.
Being a 1st time mum i was clouded with worry & got a taxi to A & E Blush
Only to find out the diagnosis was 'transitional stools'Grin- was so embarassed that i wasted their time with my pfb worries! I must have looked like a complete fruitcake especially as i also turned up there in my jim jams Blush

COCKadoodledooo · 29/09/2012 11:12

Ds1, 8 months old, put him to bed and he was fine. Started shouting about an hour later, went into him and he was all swollen; his head was so huge he looked like Staypuft from Ghostbusters Shock Rushed him down to A&E and they diagnosed an allergy to 'something' Hmm Turned out to be eggs in the end but he's grown out of it now.

Ds2, 14 months, New Year's Day. Running on the landing, turned to go into the bathroom, missed completely and smacked straight into the doorframe. He had a lump that looked like an arse come up immediately. Rang NHS Direct who asked if he could recognise us still/knew where he was (um, he's 14months and not talking yet) or if he was confused at all ('permanently bewildered' was how dh described him). Based on those answers they told us to take him in but he was fine.

He's been back once more since, when the back door slammed shut on his thumb - I carried him in and the receptionist asked what was wrong, as I was about to speak he held up his bloodied thumb and said between sobs "door, bang, ow!". He was 18months then. Not been back to A&E for either of them since but ds2 has been to OOH (also at the hospital) a few times for breathing issues/asthma.

CaptainHetty · 29/09/2012 11:15

DS1 was a few months old, very high temperature and rash on his legs.
DS2 is now 5 and as yet never had to go (I've probably just jinxed it now...)
DD was 2 and had tripped and caught her head on the clothes airer.

Fuzzymum1 · 29/09/2012 11:42

Can't remember with DS1 as he went multiple times for falls etc - thankfully only one broken bone.

DS2 leaned on edges of a toy box then lifted one hand off and the box tipped up and smacked him on the side of his head cutting his eyelid.

DS3 at about 9 months poked our elderly and generally sweet natured cat and made her jump, she reacted and caught her claw in his eyeball - thankfully only in the white and not serious - a few days of eyedrops and he was fine, His second trip was earlier this year aged 5.4 when he tripped on the threshold in the conservatory doorway and broke his arm.

derekthehamster · 29/09/2012 11:45

ds1 (12), playing basketball in a corridor at school, whacked his head hard and ended up with severe concussion
ds2 (3) broken arm from playing in a soft play centre Confused

MrsPear · 29/09/2012 12:07

My ds was 10 weeks early so was only plus 7 days when we took him to the out of hours gp at the PRU. I was worried about the fact he had stopped pooing and dh was worried about the size of his scrotum - plus he seemed to be in allot of pain. The GP told us to pop round the corner and go to A + E and we then had to drive ourselves to another hopsital as despite being a children's A+ E they didn't have the right staff. Finally at Lewisham we met a lovely surgeon who said the two problems were linked and it was a groin hernia. He popped it back and made sure we understood how to do it ourselves. We came back 4 days later for the OP. Horrible time - everytime it popped he was screaming in pain. The OP and recovery was much easier in comparrison - oh and he pooed straight after!

Imnotaslimjim · 29/09/2012 12:13

Just rmembered, DS actually had his first visit at 3 days old. Blue lighted in after suffering seziures. A week in hospital and various tests never found the cause, and they stopped after a few weeks

SnowFrickenWhite · 29/09/2012 17:07

DD was about a week old for her 1st trip to A&E, about a day after the umbilical cord crusty bit fell off her belly button started to bleed quite badly Sad
