'SAHMS' that have full time childcare or help - a fantastic liberation or downright lazy?

There are lots of mothers down here in Dorset who are (or whose husbands are) well off enough to afford NOT to work. I know a few and they all have full time aupairs or nannies. One of them has TWO nannies - one for each of her children.

It seems to be a matter of pride that you always take the nanny/au pair on holiday to help with your children. Also that the nanny/au pair takes the children to clubs and activities.

OK - I think it is outrageously lazy (and so does dh). What do you think?

its not about pants though

its about CHILDCARE

Bugsy2 · 21/02/2006 12:48

Enid, maybe we should re-title this thread "Are you poor & jealous of those with full-time childcare, who can choose if they want to work or not?". Much easier to answer: Yes, yes, yes!!

Angeliz · 21/02/2006 12:48

That's what we were thinking, just once a month or something as it's so much work we don't have time to do. Mind uyou, i like the wild look

Bugsy,

You have hit the nail on the head. Even if I didn't work mornings, I would still have childcare a few days a week so I could read, explore London, visit art galleries, sit at a cafe all morning and do all the things I can't do with a screaming toddler in tow. I am a lazy, selfish cow and not ashamed of it. My toddler has fun with his nanny, and seems perfectly happy. It's no one's business but my own.

yes suppose so bugsy

but I really am not jealous, honest

think its sad tbh - I can see how you wouold fill your day and I'd probably love it if I did it - but I enjoy being a mum to my kids with all that entails - mind you I don't think I'd be that happy doing it fulltime

Find it unutterably depressing that nanny takes kids everywhere while mum spends all day doing 'her' things. But I know certain classes of people are almost expected to do it.

robin3 · 21/02/2006 12:56

Surely in lots of cases it means Mum has more time to play with the children and generally a sunnier disposition. It's sharing the workload not just a means of dialling out and getting your nails done.

Enif · 21/02/2006 12:57

now poppadum that DOES sound lazy and self indulgent IMO

SoupDragon · 21/02/2006 12:58

Who gives a &&&&. If they can afford it and don't feel at all guilty, good for them

maybe it rescues her sanity (dorset mum) like work does with yours enid

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 12:59

why didn't I think of this when I was working?
I clearly needed someone to take over my job for a few hours every day so I could lie on my sofa and read books....
hmmmmm

compo

yes

my dd1 goes to her funded playgroup for 2.5hrs 5 days a week, so its me and dd2 at home

dd2 will start her funded playgroup when she is 3, by then dd1 will be at school. so ill have some free time to do my cleaning ironing shopping etc all by myself

or i will get a job, but this will probably be impossible because as you say you would be lucky t find a job that fits in around playgroup/school.

but thats not the point. i dont want anyone else raising my children. if i had to work so be it, but i dont, so i stay at home and look after the children .

and gdg im the same as you

if i was loaded i would have cleaners and gardeners, not someone to care for my children

and who said "whats wrong with being lazy?" thats a daft statement

Enif · 21/02/2006 13:02

dont tell cod about the floradix

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 13:02

np that's how I feel too

foxinsocks · 21/02/2006 13:02

enid and the floradix lid

Enif · 21/02/2006 13:03

you utter cow

foxinsocks · 21/02/2006 13:03

oops sorry enif

at least you know you brought joy to many that day

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 13:04

pmsl all over again

SoupDragon · 21/02/2006 13:05

"if i was loaded i would have cleaners ......."

But as a SAHM and "housewife" is it not, technically, your job to clean too?

nailpolish · 21/02/2006 13:06

er, and i do work

i do ironing for other people, while dd's sleep in their bed at night

ok its not brainsurgery, i can do while watching eastenders and drinking tea, but its a job

come to think of it, i do ironing for some sahm's who dont work

hope its none of you lot

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 13:06

hey
who says i am a housewife???
