I'm just getting started as a learner so that's my limit in Welsh so far!

This is where we can chat, use our Welsh as we are learning and give each other help/ advice/ encouragement, etc.

yfory dyn ni'n mynd i weld MIL, tua 1 awr i ffordd mewn car. Mae gardd fawr gyda hi, ac mae hi wedi plannu llawer o lysiau. Bydd hi'n rhoi amryw llysiau i ni - ffa runner, wylys, tatws, courgettes, pupur, tomatos, a pethau arall. Does dim rhaid i ni mynd i siopa! Dyw MIL ddim yn siarad Saesneg, dim un air, felly bydd rhaid i fi siarad yng ngroeg gyda hi. Dw i'n siarad Saesneg gyda'r plant ac mae MIL yn gofyn pob gair!

Mae cwestiwn bach gyda fi!

Dw i'n gwybod sut i ddweud "traeth" a "mor" ac "yn agos i'r mor", ond dw i'n moyn dweud "along the seafront/ the seafront road" eg "I went for a walk along the seafront" ?? Hefyd, sut mae "pier" yn Gymraeg? Tydi e ddim yn y geiriadur.

Dw i'n cydnabod fy mod i wedi sgwennu "ergotherapy" achos mae "ergotherapia" yng ngroeg ac wnes i ddim wybod sut i ddweud e yn Saesneg! Fel cyfieithwr, tydi e ddim yn rhy dda, braidd yn ddiog!

Mae'r ergotherapist yn gweithio i wellhau'r (fine motor skills) ac mae hi'n helpu'r plentyn i (follow simple instructions, encourages jaw muscle use, helps him to start forming sounds, something like a precursor to speech therapy, along with the motor skills). Mae'n rhy anodd i esbonio yn Gymraeg, mae arna i ofn.

Alex - I'm a Gog (& proud!!!) and I'd say "es am dro ar hyd lan y mor". And "pier"......is "pier"!!!

Ie - 'Es i am dro ar hyd lan y mor' - a ie, pier yw pier :)

And now I'm afraid I have another question. I've noticed a tendency to mutate the past tense when it is not preceded by anything else in the sentence, but I have been unable to find a reference for it. Is it incorrect not to do so?

For example, further up in this thread, Panadbois said "Glywis i hynna". Could she also have written "Clywis" ? If so, what difference does it make to the meaning? Or is it just idiomatic?

Alex, I'm no expert and there may be lots of Welsh speakers along to help you, but I think the reason the short form past is mutated like that is because there's an implied 'mi' before it, after which there's treiglad meddal. Have you come across that - I'm not sure where you live, but in the North it's used as a marker for a positive statement. But you don't always use it, hence (mi) glywes/glywais i. I don't think people always do mutate there, but I tend to to be on the safe side!

Cwestiwn arall! I notice that sometimes people mutate after a and sometimes they don't. Is this significant?

Could the mutations after a depend on the meaning of a - so treiglad llaes after a meaning and, but not after â, for example?

Oh mumsnet doesn't like my to bachs - I've never posted here in Welsh before, I didn't realise!

I can't do any accents either - my Greek keyboard will let me do Greek accents on Greek letters, but whenever I try with the Latin alphabet, whatever accent in whatever language comes out as weird characters. The few times I've put a to bach on here are because I have copy-pasted.

I meant a meaning and. Perhaps the discrepancy is just because some people are lazy don't bother with the mutations, or are making a mistake.
