New to the site and shocked

Im new to this site. I have joined others and noticed there seems to be a hate campaign against certain things such as Greggs, McDonalds, Fruit Shoots, piercing babys ears and shopping at Iceland or using frozen foods. I just wondered what was the problem with any of these?

Also why the labeling of people as 'chavs' is common? Some things on these support sites are quite shocking how people like to belittle others and try compete with parenting techniques.

Im 21 single mum with a 2 year old son and don't feel I could get much support from these sites even though thats what they are here for.

Any one else feel the same?

Baby's ears. Erm - mutilation?

HTH.

LittleMissGoodEnough · 18/02/2012 17:08

Most of it (some of it anyway) is pretty tongue in cheek. There's a pretty diverse population on here, just ignore the bits/posters you don't like and enjoy the rest of the site. Welcome!

I'm new too! I have already found it very interesting, though. There was thread the other day called "ways in which you are NOT a typical Mumsnetter". It was the first thread I read and it enlightened me quite a lot. I now think that I have some idea of who - or who is thought to - post on here and I saw that there were lots of people who, like me, aren't middle class or particularly opinionated.
I'm sure that you have strong opinions on some things.

You must have read a lot of threads to come up with that list. Do we still mention Fruit Shoots much?

Some of these things are tongue in cheek in-jokes, so as a newbie you have to allow for some of that. There's a certain sense of humour here that mightn't be obvious at first glance.

Undoubtedly there are some people who use internet sites to vent their anger, pass on the bullying they receive in their lives somewhere, or to indulge their snobbery, perhaps for reasons of low self esteem. However if you look a little deeper, you may find what you're looking for.

Starting a thread criticising a site isn't likely to win you much support though.

Buggerit · 18/02/2012 17:17

Wow lovesbeing, don't waste any words will you! Any way, as said above, there is a huge range of different ideas, values, morals etc on here, and we all think we do things the right way! Just ignore the troll hunters and the mumsnet mafia and you will be fine.

There is also nothing wrong with telling a someone if they offend you and why that is, remember this is anonymous, its not like they will be knocking on your door in the morning, and you can always name change!

That said, I have had some of the most wonderful advice and support on this site

Greggs and McDonalds sell vile greasy crap. IMO
Frozen food from Iceland-fine but not every day.
Some people like babies with pierced ears some don't.

Everyone on MN has an opinion. If you have a genuine problem you will find lots of help and support, and possibly some views you hadn't thought of.

A lot of threads are funny and lighthearted. Just join in. Smile

Kailumsmum · 18/02/2012 17:32

I mentioned i had joined other sites and noticed this. It isn't just this one site. I worry all the time weather I'm doing a good enough job for my son so seeing these threads don't help that. I just wondered what was wrong with some things people mention. I don't know what HTH or OP means so if any one can tell me it would be great! New to these sites so I don't know whats a joke and what's not. I'm sure I will eventually.

I have found loads of advice on this site.
Its great if you want to pass time, get advice/support/chat etc.

Just get stuck in and you will love it!

If you don't....then bugger off! Grin

Welcome, by the way :)

dearprudence · 18/02/2012 17:36

Which other sites dislike fruit shoots and ear-piercing? I thought it was just us! Fucking copycats. Grin

SparkySparrow · 18/02/2012 17:37

Sparkling I feel a need to tell you that I am not stalking you! Grin

Kailumsmum · 18/02/2012 17:38

Mcfee don't know if you are been sarcastic or not on the spelling of my sons name as I've had comments before. If not then thanks! Its not a dodgy spelling of Callum btw as every one assumes. It is actually a mistake on my behalf lol

suburbophobe · 18/02/2012 17:38

In Spain all baby girls have their ears pierced sometime soon after birth.

Different folks different strokes, just like MN.

I'm sure you will get lots of support if posting. Some might not be to your liking cos everyone has a different opinion. But just take from it what helps you and ignore the others.

Sparklingbrook · 18/02/2012 17:40

Kailumsmum I have been on here since October last year. I still don't fully understand everything, I am still learning.
I think just getting stuck in is the way to go. Give 'Am I Being Unreasonable' a wide berth to start with.
This week I have started threads on the vile virus that's going round, people presenting This Morning etc. Grin

what2eatwhenurbored · 19/02/2012 01:19

I felt like that too Kailumsmum, I found my way here via google to some really heated posts about transporting babies on buses. I live abroad so was shocked at some of the perspectives. I live in Argentina where all babies heads are shaved and girls ears are pierced at birth by the way. Anyway...I have been pleasantly surprised at the response I've had to both the threads I have started, the replies were very thoughtful and helpful and non judgemental.

I would never post in the 'am I being unreasonable?' section though...scary!
