This may seem a really dim and possibly anal (no pun!) and repressed question, but I am having real trouble coming up with a word for my dd's vagina which isn't, er, vagina. Just wanted to know what you all call your childrens bits/whatsits/front bottoms (hate the last one!!) so I can choose one I feel comfortable using with her and which won't make me curl up and die if she shouts it out in public. I call her bottom her botty btw!!

For DD aged 3 we use the proper word - Vagina. I used that term as a child as my mum was keen that we used proper terms. DD also uses willy. I would have taught penis but DH got there first as he takes DD swimming. She once shouted out while in pool changing room my Daddy's got a funny willy over and over again. Luckily I wasn't there!

A freinds son once told a roomful of people how his father had a willy as big as a house. Smug look from said father!!

Fanny. Though I know lots of people will hate that.

Let's face it, whatever you choose, other people will think it's twee/silly/vulgar/too anatomical, so just go with what you feel comfortable with.

nailpolish · 18/01/2006 11:46

they are called 'flowers' in this house

serenity · 18/01/2006 11:46

After many MN threads, late night debates with friends, in depth discussions with my Mum and and sister I finally ended up with.......

bits.

It's crap i know, but I can't find any other term I'm comfortable with. Vagina just seems to clinical (sorry!) Minnie, twinkle and front bottom are just too twee. It sounds OK in public, Dh isn't squirmy about using it and DD can say it.

DSs were so much easier!

JenumGeranium · 18/01/2006 11:46

I would use 'flower' - dont really know why. Have always used that term.

My boys call their bits their tadger.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2006 11:47

A lulu!

Besides, the vagina is just the birth canal. The rest of it comprises the vulva. So why do people refer to the vulva as 'vagina'?

JenumGeranium · 18/01/2006 11:47

snap nailpolish!

I sometimes call it 'doodah' aswell!

CountessDracula · 18/01/2006 11:51

Minky in our house

Sugarmag · 18/01/2006 11:53

I'm sure there have been loads of threads about this before but...

We taught dd 'vagina' because I did think it was important she actually knew what it was called but I have to admit that if it comes up in conversation (like if I need to know if she's sore or anything) I'll frequently just say 'bits' or 'down there'.

Likewise we've taught them the word penis but more often actually say willy.

On a funny note - dh sometimes tells dd she's a "Silly Billy McWilly" - just cause it ryhmes I think. So she wanted to know why she couldn't call him a "Silly Billy Vagina"!!!

Hulababy · 18/01/2006 11:54

At the moment we just use the term bottom (not front bottom [grin ) for the whole lot. If DD needs to clarify then she just says "at the front" or "front bits".

amyjade · 18/01/2006 12:01

We call it foo foo, again not sure why?

3 year old niece wanted to know what the round things were hanging under her baby brothers willy? Her mum decided goolies would be the right word to use but she then asked where are his knackers then?

harpsichordcarrier · 18/01/2006 12:04

vulva

NomDePlume · 18/01/2006 12:06

rofl at 'winky woo', sandyballs ! That's what my DD (3.5) calls this MN emoticon !

harpsichordcarrier · 18/01/2006 12:06

everything you would ever want to know on the subject ont this thread

Bugsy2 · 18/01/2006 12:20

Ds has a Willy
Dd has a Dilly

NomDePlume · 18/01/2006 12:21

Male - Winky
Female - Twinkle

NomDePlume · 18/01/2006 12:22

DD also once shouted out, 'Daddy, you've got a big hairy winky !'. Very, very

meggmoo · 18/01/2006 12:23

My neices call them their lillies which makes me laugh I think for boys it's danglies.

lucy5 · 18/01/2006 12:25

Girl =twinkle
Boy = willy

crunchie · 18/01/2006 12:26

Bits and Bobs or bits. Boys have willys

Elibean · 18/01/2006 13:06

Relieved to see this thread - I speak French to DD, and have it sorted there, but in English? No clue. Currently favouring the anatomical terms for later, 'bits' for now (she's 2) but most of all good to hear all those other terms 'cos I wouldn't have had a clue what a child was on about, referring to flowers, minkies, twinkles, or the rest! Lots to learn

Sugarmag · 18/01/2006 13:35

DD also sometimes gets confused about the rest of female anatomy - she points to her chest and says "look mummy I have bras!" I think she means breasts.

I have to say many of our friends were shocked to learn that dd knew the word vagina, and while I don't encourage her to just run around saying it, I think i would be much more embarrased to say flower, twinkle, winkle, lilly, foo foo or whatever!

onefootinthegravy · 18/01/2006 13:36

Boys have winkies in our house and girls have daises !! Which is fine but now my dd is at playschool with a young girl called daisy and my aunt has just called her cat daisy - so we're regretting that one......
