ok looking to start dd training this week. Tried in the summer with some success but then she got really upset and wouldn't sit on the potty. Brought potty out a while a go just to ger her familiar with it again and she wouldn't sit on it when prompted although sometimes straddled it on her own and then promptly got off it again. What do you recommend. Potty or straight to toilet????

mamb hope the nursery dont mess it up for you tommorow seeing as it is going so well!!

knat agree with others just ask her.

redwood its not bad that she wont go shes just determind you just have to be more so. she will soon get it.

well am a very proud mummy today . We had one accident this morning although admittedly i was still dozing in bed with dd while ds had got himseld dressed and then wet. However no other accidents at all today. We went out to grandparents for tea and while we were eating for the first time ever DS actually asked for the potty. I was sooo happy he then used it a further 2 times while there. Feel like we have crossed a bridge today as he actually asked for the potty.

MeAndMyBoy · 15/01/2006 22:42

Arr fab nemo - gold stars for you Lo today . Fingers crossed that it continues for you.

Thanks for the wishes for tomorrow (fingers crossed) but I am expecting it to go to pot tomorrow so no sweat if it does. Just hoping that it doesn't take 3 days to sort him out again and then I'll feel that we are getting somewhere.

I do intend asking nursery how they develop the every 20 mins plan though and at what point.

good luck for everyone tomorrow hoping for good days for us all.

am trying to toilet train 3 1/2yo dd1. she has down syndrome and so I anticipate it taking a long time - am not sure she has fully got the idea of wet, dry, weeing etc. However whilst reading this thread - she brought her potty to me to show me she had done a wee..... through her pants - so YEH for getting on the potty - we just need to work in her remembering to take her pants off.

Was told by sn kindy that it is better to just use pants - rather than pullups..... they are quite happy to have her sent in pants and they will help with the training when she is there 2 mornings a week.

we also had a poo in the potty today. Howeve ron the down side we have had three big wees through pants onto the floor.

eidsvold · 16/01/2006 05:40

probably not the best day to start as we are at the hospital in appts morning and afternoon tomorrow. I will have to put her in pull ups - hour drive each way.

Am intending to do the training in earnest when she is to be kept quiet and at home for at least two weeks post surgery in a week or so.

Nemo1977 · 16/01/2006 13:02

eidsvold i wouldnt worry about the 3 wees through pants on floor as its quite normal SN or NT. Hope everything goes ok at the hospital and good luck for when you get started properly.

Well ds is being very good again today. Had his little friend over to play so thought he would forget about going on potty but he didnt. Was very proud of him as I didnt even prompt he just whipped pants off and went.

Redwood · 16/01/2006 13:57

Well i am a proud mummy as DD went to nursery this morning, had no accident and did on we on potty and one wee in toilet!! Incredible, after lunch she did poo in pants but just caught it, sort of, in potty so she thinks she did it in there! Things are looking good, however she still refuses to use our toilet.Tomorrow we are at toddler group so she will have to there. How didi everyone else do today?

Nemo1977 · 16/01/2006 19:14

redwood congrate to your DD. Hope toddler group goes just as well.

Well we have had a completely accident free day so have moved the goal posts and moved potty out of the dinning room and upstairs to get Ds to give me more warning. He just told me he needed a wee and then ran up the stairs to plonk himself on the toilet to go so hoping this goes well.

Cod - thanks for your reply - only just got back on mumsnet since last week! The reason we're waiting till Feb is because we are away for the weekend on 3/2 and don't really want to be half way through training when we're away (dd hasn't got enough clothes to take with us if she's still having accidents every day). Was v. tempted to just put her in pants at the weekend but don't want to confuse her!

MeAndMyBoy · 16/01/2006 22:06

Wow Redwood and Nemo - sounds like very good days for you both well done to your little ones - and to you as well

Well as I expected it all went to pot today at nursery - 2 stars for using the toilet and then 2 accidents. They also managed to put his pull up on wrongly at nap time and he wee'd in his sleep and soaked himself all up his vest and t-shirt poor chap!!

I asked them today how their potty training plan of every 20 mins develops as the kid's get more confidant and experienced - umm basically it doesn't - they take them every 20 mins.

How is everyone else doing?

dollybird · 16/01/2006 22:26

Meandmyboy, I have been told by dc's nursery that they take all the 'trainers' in groupsas they can't take them one at a time due to headcount. I still would have thought they could take your ds every other time or something! Really, until they can say they need to go, they will always have accidents at nursery ime with ds. Was that two accidents during a whole day or just the morning?

lact8 · 16/01/2006 23:13

hey all hows it going? well done mamb and nemo on your successes!

we've been doing okay here. ds1 birthday today so was expecting ds2 to be too busy partying with the big ones to worry about bladder and had a few accidents. but he had diarrheoa this evening (poor nanny volunteered to take him to toilet and ended up having to bath him!) was wondering how y'all think i should handle it if belly still bad tomorrow. would like to avoid putting him in back in nappy if possible but then he's quite disgusted by the whole poo situation at the best of times and worried he'll freak out completely over diarrheoa. any advice most welcome!

Nemo1977 · 16/01/2006 23:26

lact8 personally would go for pull ups/nappies but then i know ds would freak at having the trots. Also know he would be most upset at being dirty so often but it completely depends on how your ds is. hope his tummy isnt too bad and it was just a result of too many treats for ds1 bday.

Vossy · 16/01/2006 23:28

Hiya. Quite new to all this. Too tired to read all the thread. On my second attempt at potty training DS1. He's 3 at the end of this month. Previously tried back in October but I think was the wrong time with new baby etc. Going better this time but he still won't tell me if he needs to go. I have to remember to take him every hour. Sometimes a battle to get him on the potty but bribery generally works. Very few accidents if I get him there but will he ever be able to take himself or at least tell me that he needs to go???????

lact8 · 16/01/2006 23:41

hi vossy, we're still being trained by cod ourselves so the mistress will be able to give you definitive answer! don't want to dishearten you but i'm still reminding ds1 (9yr old) to go, but could be cos didn't have cod to help when training him!!

guess i'll have to play it by ear in the morning but have some pull ups ready just in case! glad yr getting potty nearer to toilet nemo, sounds like he's got the idea all on his own tho, which is always big bonus if they think they're doing it themeslves

Dollybird - yes 2 accidents over the day - which said like that really is ok - as it's only the 4th day at nursery without nappies. Thanks for putting it like that I hadn't seen it.

Just a quick question for everyone - at what point would you consider you little one 'potty trained' - done and dusted?

Hi Vossy - good luck, you and DS1 can do it!!

Lact8 hope you had a good party, and that DS is ok this morning. I'd go for pull up's if he is poorly still - and maybe don't say anything about it just put them on him and then remind him that he needs to use the potty for wee's and poo's so that he doesn't get out of the routine you've already started?

What a great article - she does make it sound really simple, but with time and patience I guess it is . She is great. Liked the previous article about the spirited daughter too.
