Do you have a special song for your DCs?

Like a kind of "our song" if you see what I mean?

For DD1, it's Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet, and for DD2 it's "To Make You Feel My Love", the Adele version.

Although they are not songs about children, babies or childhood, both of these songs have me welling up and filling with love for my beautiful girls... so I just wondered if anyone has a similar story?

DH sings Feel My Love to me. Grin Dylan original though.

I have sung Your Song to both my dc while they were in hospital and continue to do so in quiet moments. I also sing 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' to them (Fairport Convention) and get a bit teary.

DH sang 'Your Childhood' to dd a lot. The bit that goes 'you've got your mother's looks, you're a beautiful little girl, you'll break boys hearts all over this world, then one day you'll walk out the door and I know you'll break mine, you'll break mine' used to have me sobbing.

DD1 is a nursery rhyme fanatic at the moment. 'Our song' is Eric Clapton's Layla (I bet you can guess why). DD2 and I don't have a song but she was born in front of The X Factor the night Wagner left the sham competition.

Your Childhood, fabulous and not well known song.

Blush DDs song is my old man's a dustman with knees up lives upstairs thrown in as a special chorus.
DH sings James Blunt you're beautiful to her.

barnet · 04/11/2011 09:32

You are my sunshine, ds sings it to me now, ahhhh

MMQC · 04/11/2011 09:34

My daughter's is 'Weather with you' by Crowded House. Just because she loves it, and it's kind of right for her.

My son would be the Candy Man. Not really sure why.

academyblues · 04/11/2011 09:41

Summertime. Everynight before bed.

Ds bursts into tears if he hears it and I'm not around.

Pippaandpolly · 04/11/2011 09:42

I sing Daughter by Loudon Wainwright III to DD a lot. Always makes me a bit teary. Also The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel. No real connection to her but about growing up and generally lovely. Makes me think of my dad too-the bit about reading especially.

TougherThanTheRest · 04/11/2011 09:43

You and Me song by the Wannadies is my song with DD - I used to sing it to her when she was a baby and it was just the 2 of us (well there was DH as well but those long early days at home alone with her it felt like just us!) Also used to sing You Are My Sunshine and that's still true, she does light up my life most of the time when she's not winding me up

Mum1369 · 04/11/2011 09:47

Valerie for DS1 just because he loves it, and' It's all about you' for DS2 ...boy did he grow into that one.....

OtterBjitch · 04/11/2011 09:50

DS1's song is 'Sweet like Chocolate' by Shanks and Bigfoot. Not the most challenging lyrics perhaps. Smile

He is still sweet, 13 years on, and does 'give me so much joy'. soppy mother this morning

Llanarth · 04/11/2011 11:40

"If you were a sailboat' by Katie Melua for my DS. Listened to it with him when pregnant. The words 'you took a chance on loving me, I took a chance on loving you' gets me every time.

chinateacup · 04/11/2011 12:01

For DS1 it is Take That " Greatest Day " for obvious reasons and also it was released at that time so was everywhere - on the radio on the way to hospital, when I was feeding him etc.
Also for him, " Wires " by Athlete due to a stay in SCBU. That song still kills me every time.

For DS2 Jack Johnson " Better Together " - listening to it when he was born. Gorgeous.

Timeoutofmind · 04/11/2011 12:44

Lovely thread. My DH sings 'the drugs don't work' by the verve to my DD as it was always sure to settle her when she was newborn.

I always sing 'isn't she lovely' to her, and used to sing elton johns blue eyes when she was a newborn and just used to look at me with her big blue eyes.

LauraShigihara · 04/11/2011 12:50

What a nice thread. I usually sing Dream a Little Dream of Me or (his favourite) Close To You at bedtime.

Astronaut79 · 04/11/2011 12:57

Ds was born to the RAmones 'Blitzkrieg BOp'. It was playing on the radio. Our wedding song was also RAmones (version of baby I love you). Would like DC to pop out to another Ramones tune, but accept the chances are slim! Mind you, chances of Dc popping out at all are looking bloody slim at present.Angry

Sadly, DS's early punk promise has been replaced by a love of TV theme tunes and he will, quite randomly, start trying to sing Postman Pat, or 'Pas ma pa' as he calls it.

Astronaut79 · 04/11/2011 12:59

USed to sing 'Molly Malone' and TOm WAits song with a name I don't know, something about the long way home, every night to DS when he was little. TOm WAits probably not particularly appropriate, but lovely, soothing tune!

bail · 04/11/2011 13:03

Lovely thread. For some reason has made me well up a little bit!

My darling mum used to sing Que Sera Que Sera ('when I was just a little girl, I asked my mama, what will I be. Will I be pretty, will I be rich, here's what she said to me....' etc

She passed away before my DS was born. He is now 15 months and from birth I have sung the same song, but slightly altered the wording.... 'when I was just a little boy, I asked my mama, that's ME!, what will I be, will I be handsome, will I be rich...' etc.

Sorry long post, but lovely to relive it
x

sydenhamhiller · 04/11/2011 13:06

For DS it used to be 'Danny boy' with name replaced...along with anything else I happened to know by heart (mainly sound of music songs poor child). But now he's 7, his request is always for 'jerusalem'. We're not rugby fans, think he enjoys the tune and Vocabulary.

DD (5) always wants the song I've sung both of them since they were little, the one Dumbo's mum sings to him, 'Baby Mine'. Reading this, realise my musical taste is hardly rock 'n' roll...

pookamoo · 04/11/2011 14:18

It's funny how the songs just sort of attach themselves to the babies, isn't it?
Some lovely ones on here.

Our song is either the 1950's Flanders and Swann classic 'A Transport of Delight' or Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. We perform the first together as an impromptu party-piece, complete with actions ... and the second allows us to enjoy a bit of private head-banging in the car, Waynes World stylee. All together now....

StitchingMoss · 04/11/2011 14:48

"See what I?m trying to say is:
You make things .. better
And no matter what the day is,
With you here .. it?s better."

beautiful . . . .

vez123 · 04/11/2011 16:52

Puff the Magic Dragon! Love this song

EverythingsNotRosie · 04/11/2011 18:50

DD gets 'cottonfields'- 'when I was a little bitty baby, my mama would rock me in the cradle...' At bed time, don't even know why! And at the moment lots of our own adaptation of that Bruno Mars song 'oh, baby, I think I wanna cuddle you!'

Honeydragon · 04/11/2011 19:01

Ds is The New Seekers - Another You, dh used to sing him to sleep with it, as did I when only that would do

Dd is Eels, My Beloved Monster, which suits her a treat. I sang to her before she was even born.
