Like a kind of "our song" if you see what I mean?

For DD1, it's Dire Straits' Romeo and Juliet, and for DD2 it's "To Make You Feel My Love", the Adele version.

Although they are not songs about children, babies or childhood, both of these songs have me welling up and filling with love for my beautiful girls... so I just wondered if anyone has a similar story?

Dds is because my Mum was undergoing cancer treatment at the time so the lyrics were really apt.

UpsyDozy · 04/11/2011 19:05

"Edelweiss" and "Dream dream dream" for my 2. I have been singing those to them since they were tiny. And "Baby Mine" for DC3, helps me calm us both down when he has me up in the night!!

BustyDeLaGhetto · 04/11/2011 19:07

Awwwww. DD has LOADS - we made her a 'mix CD' for journeys in the car when she was but a foetus. It had Little Yellow Spider by Devandra Banheart on it, as well as Simon & Garfunkal and Chas n' Dave's Rabbit Rabbit.

However 'her' song is Wild Beasts 'All the Kings Men' - just because it would send her to sleep when NOTHING else would.

ShowofHands I also sing Your Song to her. Badly.

I got all teary eyed in the hospital after having DD1 when I suddenly realised the significance of "Slipping through my fingers" (Abba). She was only 5 days old but I felt like it was all going so fast!

Now I think most mothers probably find that one a bit of a tear-jerker.

For DD it was a Welsh childrens song, Mynd Drot Drot.

For DS it was 'If I had words to make a day for you' because he was golden and blue (blond, blue eyed) as a baby. He's 13 now and still likes me to sing it if he feels a bit ill.

Dancing in the moonlight by toploader (we did alot of that when he was little)

We get it on most every night
when that moon is big and bright
its a supernatural delight
everybodys dancing in the moonlight

we get
everybody here is out of sight
they dont bark and they dont bite
they keep things loose they keep it tight
everybodys dancing in the moonlight

dancing in the moonlight
everybodys feeling warm and bright
its such a fine and natural sight
everybodys dancing in the moonlight

pookamoo · 04/11/2011 20:22

and isn't it great that they love your singing when they are little!?

MrsChemist · 04/11/2011 20:25

With both it's a song called Lass from the Low Countree.

It's quite sad an mournful, but i'd sing it to DS1 to get him to sleep and it calms DS2 down as well.

CatherineWheel · 04/11/2011 20:27

Just the way you are, Bruno mars. Was on MTV a lot in the early days and I sing it lots to dd 'cos girl you're amazing, just the way you are'.

pissovski · 04/11/2011 20:50

DS is only 6 months so I am still testing out my song choices. I sing Dream a Little Dream and Close To You, and You are my Sunshine. Bring Me Sunshine too. But 'our' song is Green Day Time Of Your Life - i've sung it to him many times and will often quieten him when he's upset.

PP - I love "Better" (but i know it as a Boyzone song)

oldsilver · 04/11/2011 20:57
Rule the World - and I am in no way a fan of Take that, whatsoever at all.

Was having a bit of a hard time of it, feeling it was me and DS against the world, this came on one of the music channels and it just seemed so right. I danced around the room with him in my arms.

When he hears it now it's always "Lets dance mummy, it's yours and my song" so we do Smile

When DS was still in utero, and when he was a little baby, it was always Honey For the Bee by the Witches of Elswick (No, you haven't heard of it, doesn't matter. I have just tried to find it online and it's not there). Also, when he was a newborn, I used to put on whatever the Happy Shopper MTV is (Viva? TFM?) and 'our songs' were Wake Me Up by Girls Aloud and Vertigo by U2, which was forever in my head in those early days - Hello hello, in a place called vertigo, tell me something that I didn't know but YOU give me love I can feel...

These days 'our song' is Lazy Sunday by the Small Faces.

Ixia · 04/11/2011 22:41

I've always sung I Need a Boat Man, from the Jonah and the Whale musical. As a toddler she loved to dance to Jerk it off by The Caesars Blush.

schroeder · 04/11/2011 22:51

otter I cannot believe somone else has that song for their child Shock.

ds 'Sweet like Chocolate' by Shanks and Bigfoot.
dd 'tender' by blur.

kickingking · 05/11/2011 09:55

Mine was born to Your Song - elcs, the midwife clearly planned it!

DS thinks it was actually written about him Grin

Chandon · 05/11/2011 10:00

DS (9) and I always sing "three little birds".

great song.

lillybloom · 05/11/2011 10:07

S club 7 reach for the stars

Cold play Yellow

You are my sunshine

Its all about you McFly

FrightNight · 05/11/2011 10:07

Dolly & kenny's Islands in the stream was on Chris Evans every Friday at teatime when DS was little.

We sing The Flood in the car very dramatically.

He sings this with his Nanny who is 75 and doesn't know herself where she learned it:

Hey round the corner woohoo
Under the berry tree
Hey round the corner, under the bush
Looking for Henry Lee

FrightNight · 05/11/2011 10:12

Well bugger me I just googled nannys song and it's by June Carter Cash!

hardcolin · 05/11/2011 10:21

Gosh, this thread has an impressive list of tracks Envy

My dd (5) gets my own version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (more car advert tempo than nursery rhyme) and I've been singing it to her from womb to world.

DH sings/hums She Moves In Her Own Way (Kooks). Again, since in utero. Not sure why.

Tuppenyrice · 05/11/2011 10:34

Lovely thread.

Don't Let Me Down - DS1 sang it out loud when just a tot surprising us greatly. Now it's part of his repertoire. (was also my much missed Dad's favourite Beatles track so added sob factor there.)

Rewind - Paulo Nutini. I can listen to that without weeping. A holiday song from a time before everything went tits up for me. Wish I could rewind...

Violet Hill - Coldplay. A holiday song for us all - happy times in the car etc

But mostly Hush Little Baby as I have to sing that to the older 2 every night to settle them.

feedtheghoul · 05/11/2011 10:51

Now for me, the song that always reminds me of ds as a baby and makes me blub is Chasing Cars by Snowpatrol.

However, ds would have other ideas and 'his' songs are Monster - the automatic and Kennedy - The wedding present.

I did spend many a day twirling him round the room singing Blondie's Sunday Girl and Ever fallen in love by The Buzzcocks so they always raise a wistful smile too!

pookamoo · 05/11/2011 21:02

I love all of these!

Elbow's One Day Like This is my song for my DD, it was playing as we drove her home from the hospital. Ah, it's making me well up thinking about it - cause holy cow, I love your eyes, and only now I see the light... I sing it to her a lot (very very badly)

Whatevertheweather · 06/11/2011 19:08

Dd1 is Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. It was released when I was pg with her and used to sing it when I was bf Smile

Dd2 - Baby Mine from Dumbo. She sadly died soon after she was born and it was played at her funeral. Makes me howl now every time I hear it Sad
