How much do you 'ignore' your children?

Have just been out with two families - friends of ours- who have kids about the same age, and I have to confess, I am amzed by the extent to which they actively 'ignore' their children trhoughout the whole afternoon.

By this I mean they seem to 'zone out' from all the various requests/ questions/ constant 'to-ing and fro-ing' that seems typical of under- 6s??

As a result they actively seem to enjoy themselves more, manage to have 'adult' conversations (which I gave up years ago )and it seems that their kids eventually give up and go and sort out themselves whatever it is they want....( which seems like a good thing I suppose)

I can't decide whether I'm just a mug with my kids and let them dominate my life too much... but I simply CAN'T ignore them - it seems really rude and uncaring somehow??

i said i was thinking of sending my dd there and my friend had told me about the links with the RBS....

Caligula · 12/09/2005 13:58

GG You're such an attention seeker!

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 13:58

QoQ ok i don't dispute the fact that your son thought you left him. I am just saying the circumstances were very different. This boy had only ever mixed with his mum and nan never with other children or adults. He was socially immature and didnt know how to do very much for himself..... ok it was found at a later date that this is partly because of the autism... but i didn't know that the second day i met him after 4 yrs did i?

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 13:58

get on with it - I've got to go and hoover a bit of the carpet which I've just tried some Carpet Shampoo on.....and I've got washing to hang on the line!

Jimjams · 12/09/2005 13:59

and..... I'm all ears!

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 13:59

but you said that she found out about the autism later?

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 13:59

and how do you know my circumstances?

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 13:59

caligula not half as much as someone else on this thread!

Anyway it turns out that my 'friend' has totally got her wires crossed and the receptionist wasn't aware of any outreach or auditions from the RBS, let alone the guaranteed three places for life we have been led to believe..........

Err....not surprised?

Vaunda · 12/09/2005 13:59

Zippi it is a bit far from me we are in south london. shame though.

ok QoQ had you just moved many miles away from your home with a small child who had never interacted with others? except mum and nan? no man around, no children?

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 14:01

JJ - why have you got washing on your lap? Just chuck it on the floor

Caligula · 12/09/2005 14:02

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 14:02

we i'd only been back in the UK for 2yrs and didn't know anyone apart from the house were we living in, well until DS was 6 months old, when we had to move again......oh and then another 'forced' move at 18 months...

GeraldGiraffe · 12/09/2005 14:02

vaunda- if your cousin's circumstances are as you describe- maybe she was at the end of her tether and it was a kind of breakdown.
