Disposables are the devils work!

Just had to announce this!! Just come back from hols and put DD in disposables as I couldn't be bothered washing cottons while away and my god they really are sh*te!!! They stink of chemicals, I had gel stuff oozing out of them, she got nappy rash and ended up doing loads of washing from the explosive poos which ended up all over her clothes. Couldn't wait to get home and put her in her lovely, fluffy, big bummed Tots. Aaar rant over!!

Sleepysuzy - it's also the washing cycle and the detergents used.

misdee · 24/08/2005 14:46

but at least its not landfill.

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 14:48

But you could argue that the consumption of electricity and associated global warming is worse than landfill.

Anyway, what's 300 years (that's apparently how long they take to break down, although how they know this when disposables weren't around in 1705 AD I don't know) in a landfill site in the history of time . A mere second.

I'm not sure if I am joking or serious with that last point...

caligula · 24/08/2005 14:53

Well I don't care about landfill, I use them because they're cheaper than disposables.

Actually I do care a bit about landfill. But if I'd known that my kids were still going to be needing nappies at the ages of 6 and 3, I wouldn't have ever bothered with disposables (except when we're staying at someone else's house)

spidermama · 24/08/2005 15:02

That research was flawed. I wasn't a mumsnetter at the time but I'm sure you all debated the living daylights out of it.
I'm sure anoyone who's genuinely interested and concerned will know by now that the recent research into the environmental impact of nappies was fatally flawed

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 15:05

Yes there will always be counter argument / research to say that something is flawed, and counter -counter research in cyclical fashion ad nauseum.

It suits me to believe it..

caligula · 24/08/2005 15:06

This is a good example of if you repeat a lie often enough it becomes "true".

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 15:09

Assuming that it is a lie of course!

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 15:09

(am unconvinced)

caligula · 24/08/2005 15:14

Doesn't matter whether it is or not - we can all believe whichever oft-repeated truth we want!

tarantula · 24/08/2005 15:14

HMC the research stated that if you used new cotton nappies for each child, washed them at 90 with fabric conditioner, tumble dried them fully and then ironed them that they would then be no better for the environment than disposables.

So it didnt take into account Hemp nappies, second hand nappies, washing at 60 with no fabric conditioner NOT IRONING (who apart form my mother ever ironed nappies?)

spidermama · 24/08/2005 15:20

I completely understand discodolly's aversion to disposables. We can only go by our gut reactions and mine is squeamish about them.
The gel feels nasty and slimely through the nappy and I agree, there is a throat-catching smell which is also very unpleasant. I also don't like putting human poo into the bin. I think it belongs in the plumbing.

Discodolly, if you're still there, don't worry about the nasty posts. There are plenty of really reasonable, nice people here too. The current climate appears to be rather venomous, but don't take on the venom for them. It's not yours.

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 15:23

tarantula - you slut! you mean you don't iron your nappies

tarantula · 24/08/2005 15:29

lol HMC I hang my hang in shame

This isnt the place to admit that I rarely wash or dry them either (cos dp does them) Im onto a winner with this one.

discodolly · 24/08/2005 21:20

WOW!!! This is fantastic, do i get a prize for getting so many responses??!! OK, to answer your questions and comments - I used Pampers. The gel thing happended after she had been in nappy all night and so had obviously done a shedload of wees. I hadn't read the Aptamil thread before posting. I didn't call anyone who uses disposables a bad parent - after all I was using them myself, I was merely saying that I didn't like using them and had had a rough week with them.

Cheers nailpolish for the tips - despite the rough week I will still probably use them when I go away again. But a different brand eh!

Chipmonkey - My halo just got so darn big I couldn't fit the washing mahine in the car too.

Starloveer & Spidermama - cheers for sticking up for me! I must say I was a little taken aback by the abusive messages but if that kind of small mindedness rocks their boats let em get on with it.

Finally, sorry to anyone who took offence.

Discodolly, what about Moltex? They have little or no gel and apparently biodegrade in 8 weeks in a wormery? Though it might also prove difficult to get a wormery into the car!

serah · 24/08/2005 22:06

Well, I'm offended. You never said whether you were a newbie flamer or an old timer flamer.

I think in light of "today" you definitely don't win prizes on the number of responses though!!!

aloha · 24/08/2005 22:10

It's just not true that the whole nappy doesn't decompose - only a small percentage of the nappy takes a while to rot away - the rest is extremely biodegradable. My son had a nanny share and the other child used cloth nappies and was absolutely tortured with the most hideous nappy rash, while my son never go it. Nappy rash is certainly not caused by disposables. I think they are the most wonderful thing ever. Can't imagine how horrible my life would be with an endless round of poo scraping, the stink of them in my house and the shitty washing. I also really don't like the look of them.

misdee · 24/08/2005 22:12

i love cloth. i think nappies hanging on the line looks lovely.

and we rarely get nappy rash. in fact the worst nappy rash we have had was when dd1 was in disposables.

Yes I've had moltex nappies before. They're very expensive though and tend to leak, but still preferable.
