Just had to announce this!! Just come back from hols and put DD in disposables as I couldn't be bothered washing cottons while away and my god they really are sh*te!!! They stink of chemicals, I had gel stuff oozing out of them, she got nappy rash and ended up doing loads of washing from the explosive poos which ended up all over her clothes. Couldn't wait to get home and put her in her lovely, fluffy, big bummed Tots. Aaar rant over!!

"i haven't even read the milupa thread.."

the Milupa thread - there's about 50 of them LOL.

And how do we know that Discodolly is new? The "perils" of name changes......

niceglasses · 24/08/2005 12:04

I don't think discodolly was being nasty or rude at all...and maybe not deserving of some of the responses. But I must say, having just come in to read this, it was a little bit provocative...."they stink of chemicals" makes me wonder have I been putting these nappies on my children (can't say I've noticed it mind you). I suppose just a little bit saying we are making bad decisions...although I'm sure thats not the way it was intended, it just came across to me like that, and maybe others. When in fact, I'm quite happy with the decisions I've made, and don't really care what other pple do as long as they are happy.

Lizzylou · 24/08/2005 12:05

Also, you couldn't have been verbally battering me as we're on pc's not actually speaking to each other...doh!!! Sorry for being thick!

Lizzylou · 24/08/2005 12:05

Yeah, you typingly battered me, Starlover.....sob!

serah · 24/08/2005 12:07

just her posts QoQ - she doesn't post like an old timer, and says her DD is 18 weeks - I have to admit, I am making an assumption and assumption is the mother of all f*ck ups.

Someone flame me. Haven't had a flaming in a while.

starlover · 24/08/2005 12:08

pah! i shall typingly batter whoever i want!

serah · 24/08/2005 12:09

me!! me!!

I'm asking for it!!!

I'm like a lamb to the slaughter.

Do it.....

happymerryberries · 24/08/2005 12:13

LOL at the 'stink of chemicals' line btw. What is wee if not Urea and various Salts. And poo, chock full of broken down haemoglobin, and if healthy a 1/3 to 1/2 is dead bacteria all of which are merrily decomposing to make a vast range of chemicals!

Just found this on the internet....can't believe this but someone made a study of the chemical composition of human faeces!!

The generation rate of the elements in the excreta was 7.6-7.9 g N/cap/day, 1.6-1.7 g P/cap/day, 1.8-2.7 g K/cap/day, 1.0-1.1 g S/cap/day, 0.75-1.5 g Ca/cap/day, 0.25-0.4 g Mg/cap/day, 9-16 mg Zn/cap/day, 1.4-1.5 mg Cu/cap/day, 0.3 mg Ni/cap/day, 0.02-0.03 mg Cd/cap/day, 0.07-0.14 mg Pb/cap/day, 0.01 mg Hg/cap/day and 0.8-1.1 mg B/cap/day. The metals (Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, Hg) are mainly excreted via the faeces and the remaining elements (N, P, K, S, B) are mainly excreted via the urine.

Wow all those 'chemicals'!

SleepySuzy · 24/08/2005 12:14

I love chemicals

serah · 24/08/2005 12:17

Are any of those chemicals in formula HMB??

harpsichordcarrier · 24/08/2005 12:19

LOL at this thread... the devil is a pretty busy chap, isn't he, what with whipping up war and pestilence and of course the complete works of Barney the Dinosaur.
and formula of course
personally I think that disposable are god's reward to me for being such a great mother.

happymerryberries · 24/08/2005 12:20

Whoa! Not going there!!!!

Do know that breast milk contrains the scarey sounding, lutein + zeaxanthin, ß-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, -carotene, ß-carotene, retinol, and -tocopherol, and good thing too!

chipmonkey · 24/08/2005 13:08

Dammit, very behind with the laundry! Am probably going to have to put the Devils work on ds3 today.

eidsvold · 24/08/2005 13:11

they are a godsend for me - have a 3yo who is nowhere near being toilet trained and we use them. I do use cloth for dd2 although she also has disposables.

FWIW - only time dd1 ( always in disposables) ever had nappy rash was when she was in hospital and had a reaction to a spcialised formula she was having that caused all sorts of stomach upset.

If the gel is oozing then you really needed to change them sooner. Only time I have gel oozing is when for whatever reason I haven't been able to change her nappy in time and we have had huge wees. You would probably find that you change the cloth nappies more regularly than you did the disposables - unconcsiously - which would have caused the gel. Were they cheap nappies - or the mroe robust types like Huggies or pampers?

Wee is sterile and does not cause nappy rash... the combination of poo and wee caused the nappy rash bacteria in the poo that works towards causing the nappy rash....... I do not use cream on my dd's - just wipe and change their bums - no nappy rash.

SleepySuzy · 24/08/2005 13:16

eidsvold - hear, hear, well said

Toothache · 24/08/2005 13:31

Spidermama - I'd LOVE be sitting next to you at a dinner party. I've never met anyone so pure..... and horrible and rude and judgemental and singleminded at the same time! Oh and before you start.... I did buy wahsable nappies.... but as mentioned earlier my dd's thighs were too fat..... probably due to all that breastmilk I was feeding her!

sweetkitty · 24/08/2005 14:04

I have a foot in both camps as I use washables but at the moment circumstances mean that disposables are the best bet for us. Have never noticed any difference in nappy rash in DD's bum, it's the poo that does the damage not the nappy. Don't like the squishy feeling disposables get after a few hours as they fill with wee, don't like when washables fill with wee either come to think about it.

Never had a Pampers Active Fit leak on me or leak chemicals although have had fuzzi bunz leak now and again.

As someone said below "can't they not invent a baby that's toilet trained from birth or better still doesn't poo or wee at all" couldn't care less what other people cover their little darlings bums with.

SleepySuzy · 24/08/2005 14:25

I've tried cotton nappies, but I'm just not organised enough to keep on top, and they did not seem comfortable for my dd at all. So I have gone back to disposables.

Will probably try and sell the cotton nappies.

misdee · 24/08/2005 14:30

i hate disposdables. i do use them on occasion, but hate them. they feel odd. when dd3 was in disposables on holiday MIL said 'she feels different and smells different, what have you done?' dd3 was slipping off MIL lap due to lack of nappy bum basically.

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 14:36

One common fallacy about disposables is that they are less environmentally friendly than washables - whereas recent research points to the adverse evironmental impact of the washing / detergents used/ drying for cloth nappies.

Nappy rash - I switched from cloth to disposable because my dd has chronic nappy rash with cloth (nappies are always wet!)

Just thought I'd do a boring farty post in contrast to all the polemical exciting ones.

handlemecarefully · 24/08/2005 14:36

should have put my dd had chronic nappy rash, since she no longer needs nappies.

milkymouth · 24/08/2005 14:42

toothache...are you always so unpleasant? Everything you post seems to be designed to upset people.

SleepySuzy · 24/08/2005 14:43

HMC - someone mentioned that to me recently, that the amount of drying it takes to dry cottons (if you use a dryer) is as bad as using disposables. Have not read the evidence tho.
