dd4 has high risk of downs from the risk factors of the antenatal tests. Have told some friends & have go the words - that I'll feel chosen, that they're so rewarding. I think this is rubbish - our ds will be who he is just like any other kid.

sparklymieow · 15/08/2005 00:21

and 'but he makes up for not being able to use his legs properably by using his brain'
Yes he is smart, but if he was normal (hate that word) he would still have the same brain FFS!!!

My aunt last week said

"oh well you'll be able to go to restaurants- do lots of eating out - tha'll be nice".

I explained there was no way we could go to a restaurant with ds1.

"Oh but your mum said he was getting better since he's been at his new school".

WTF????? So then had to explain that she meant that he was improving a lot, and was a lot happpier, but was still miles away from normal and always will be. And that restaurants didn't feature.

I've had the "oh he doesn't look autistic" one RnB and the sppecial skill - usually oh "I bet he's really good at maths isn't he?". Talk about not having a clue.

gingerbear · 15/08/2005 08:50

When I was asked when pregnant,'Do you know what you are having' I would answer, 'well I think it is a baby, but I was hoping for an antelope, because they can stand and walk within two minutes of birth and I wouldn't have to mess about with nappies.'

logic · 15/08/2005 08:51

I'm a bit shocked by the mocking posts on here about ppl trying to comment on SN children in a positive way. Would you rather they said something nasty? Would you rather they ignored them on the grounds that they don't know what to say? I don't think that I would...

Btw, I don't have an SN child but I do have a baby with a birthmark on her face so I do have to deal with ppl not knowing what to say about it...

Jimjams · 15/08/2005 09:03

oh FGS

Sorry but he'll soon catch up is a ridiculous thing to say to someone with a severely disabled child. It deserves mockery, particularly because I can't say anything in response- so it's let out here.

Sparkley's things she's had to endure about thwe brain taking over the legs are equally stupid. So stupid they made me laugh when I read them

special skill- yawn.

And as for my AUNT- well I could forgive a stranger- why would they know how far from that he was- but my AUNT should make some attempt to understand our situation.

I think it depends who says it as well. For example in the weeks leadng up to xmas everyone and their dog says "ooh I bet they're really looking forward to xmas aren't they?" and I smile sweetly and say yes. BUT when my SIL says it EVERY WEEK, every year even though every time we reply we say "Well ds1 doesn't really understand about xmas" then it gets draining and I want to stick my head in a bucket of icy water. I think it just shows an unwillingness to take on board anything really.

Jimjams · 15/08/2005 09:36

Oh and I've just remembered the stupidist thing anyone has ever said to me ever. Having been in her class for almost a year DS1's mainstream teacher sent a note home in the home-link book saying "could you sit ds1 down this weekend and explain to him that pinching hurts". I was LIVID, and worried (as it showed she had zero clue, absolutely zero) until I showed his SALT who threw back her head, rooared with laughter and had to wipe the tears from her eyes.

Thank god for special schools.
