Ciao tutte!!

You are probably right we should at least rule it out. The old pediatra is good and a real pignola. Will see what DH says about this, if we want to go private or do both.

Francagoestohollywood · 08/03/2010 14:29

It's probably going to be a mix of private/public, as it's often the case here.
How about finding an associazione genitori that could advise you on the steps to get a diagnosis here in Italy?

Off to pick up the dc.

Rosa · 08/03/2010 14:49

Sputnik so what if you burst into tears it is a perfectly normal reaction and any one in your situation will probably do the same.
Good idea to do as MM says and just get as much info as you can before dh gets back so you have some places to start from as if you were like me you will want answers asap. then when you decide which direction you want to go I guess as Franca says over here a good mix of public and private.
On a lighter note dd opened a late birthday present it is her first Barbie and along with the fake cheap Barbie that was in her cake she has been playing for the last 15 mins....Only thing is it is a bikini dressed one 'Mamma we have to get her another dress as she will be cold like this'. DH rolled his eyes and said ..Here we go the expensive Barbie train has started

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 08/03/2010 15:17

Sputnik, can I suggest this website as well which I looked at when I had to do my own research in re to Autism, in Italy. I'd read as much as I can and get some referrals. Def more than one take different routes. It could well be that or somthing else or nothing. In any case I am one for early diagnosis as I could see the immense difference early intervention and help can make for everybody.
Must go to pick up DD but I'll try to come back later.

A big hug in the meantime.

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/03/2010 17:10

Sput i was thinking again about what you said on the other thread, that the teacher who mentioned autism had observed similar behaviour in 5-6 year old kids. Stating the obvious, what's "normal" for a 3 year old may not be necessarily be normal for a 6 year old. I'd wait till you've spoken to someone a bit more knowledgeable before imagining the very bleakest scenarios...

Camomilla · 08/03/2010 21:31

Sputnik, I echo what the others have said, of course you must be worried, but try not to see just the worst case scenario. hope you get a quick referal soon, the specialist centre dniece goes to have been brilliant, I'm sure there are good places there too.

Sputnik · 09/03/2010 12:37

Yes you are right, I am feeling more positive today, and focusing on what he can do. We have spent a lot of time playing. I also got hold of a number for an English SALT, have to phone back this afternoon.

Rosa · 09/03/2010 12:41

Great stuff Sputnik and glad you are feeling more positive.
Batten down the hatches as the bad weather is coming again. It is zero up here and a wind that is so strong it is making waves in the canals ( no joke). Kept dd at home as she has MR cough and she would have probably got blown over. Dh said when he jumped up in the air he was blown forward ( The silly things men do !)

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 12:52

Hello Sputnik, glad to hear you are feeling more positive today, and that you've already found an English SALT . I hope the phone call goes well this pm.

Lol rosa. Bloody freezing here too. Have just had a preventivo from the dentist of about 3.000 euros for a new tooth. Are they joking?

Have finished watching the wire 5 . What am I gonna do now with my evenings? I certainly can't watch any italian prog after it, no? Things like Capri 2 or Carabinieri 15. Sput will post the dvd asap.

Rosa · 09/03/2010 13:02

Franca if you know exactly what the dentist has to do get a quote from a Uk dentist and work out if it is better to go back there. We found it was costing in flights but we diddnt have to pay accom . It wasn't a new tooth but a sort of cap and it took 3 days and we saved lots!

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 13:07

really? I need to first translate what needs to be done! I don't actually need to put a new tooth, I'd rather not to, to be honest. So fed up of having people faffing about my teeth

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 13:08

Gosh it really sounds way cheaper. I suppose I could ring my dentist in exeter.

Rosa · 09/03/2010 13:14

Even better as your UK dentist will probably have your x rays and be able to see what tooth etc. I know of people who go to CRoatia to the dentist but I am not sure I would be able to do that !

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 13:18

No, I wouldn't dare going to a dentist I don't know. Our dentist in the UK was lovely.

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 13:53

It's snowing. bastaaaaaaaaaa.

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/03/2010 14:32

here not snowing but atrocious arctic wind, it must be minus 8. I. HAVE. HAD. ENOUGH.

Rosa · 09/03/2010 14:50

OH balls if it is snowing on you then it will hit us later unless the wind changes direction and it doesn't look like it. DH said that the pompieri are all over the city as there will be intonaco etc coming down like rainwater!
MM - It has to get better soon ....... Hasn't it?????

Sputnik · 09/03/2010 15:16

Ugh, nasty here too.
Rosa, lol at your DH being blown along!
Mean't to say yesterday, your cake is the biz, would not look out of place in a shop window. You should print a pic and put a flyer up outside the school or something.

Camomilla · 09/03/2010 20:22

Sput, glad you're feeling better.

Rosa, forgot to say happy belated b-day to your dd and WOW at that cake!!!

very fed up with winter here too, making me feel so depressed. We had such big plans for sunday, meal out with nice walk through Richmond park, but yes, was lovely, but sooooooooooo cold! so ended up staying to soak in the sun in the conservatory instead!

Francagoestohollywood · 09/03/2010 20:37

Yes, fed up of winter too. Still snowing and freezing. Rosa I've heard there is bora in nord adriatico!

BananaGio · 10/03/2010 07:43

oh yes meant to say amazing cake as well Rosa.
Sput how did phone call go? Franca I still have my dental treatment in UK.
Well last night we finished The Wire Season 1 and am tapping feet impatiently waiting for play.com to deliver season 2. Loved it!

Bora Franca is not the word..... It is terrible. I have mini snow drifts on my windows ( they are flat windows BTW not ledges) I am on the second floor and last night the wind never stoped. It has been snowing since about 5am and dh is not going to work. I would have hidden the boat keys if he had even thought about it...its far too dangerous out there I might go out later just to get some air as I have cabin fever as have been in since Saturday night apart from getting dd from school on Mon.
DD1 full blown cold and MR had a bad night so all in all lovely day ahead.

Bucharest · 10/03/2010 08:14

Hello lovelies.

Feck it's cold.

Sput- big hugs from me. I can ask my friend in Bologna (she's American) what steps she took when she was going through this assessment with her son last year. Situation was slightly different in that she was convinced her son was autistic/Aspergers but many many doctors she spoke to in Bologna poo-pooed her and said it was because he was a spoiled only child and )
Unfortunately she came up against many brick walls like this (even at some specialist child mental health hospital unit) Another word of warning is she asked her son's nursery to look out for "signs" and when she asked them for feedback they were "oh yes, he ticks all the boxes". He later proved (after she took him to the UK for assessment) to be not autistic or aspbergers but to be intolerant to various foodstuffs that had fvcked with his behaviour and emotional development.

Why do the school think he might be?

Missed some birthdays I see, Rosa's dd and Camo- hope they were good!

Having bit of mare with dd although it's sorting itself, she's been having capricci about going to Aunt's etc while I'm at rientro and teacher has said she feels abandoned. So I'm working hard at coccolando and counting down days to when at least 2 of these projects finish (22nd March)

Who asked about Italian course? I have a book called Italian For You. It's kind of zero to a good intermediate standard...very textbooky, it's what they use in UK universities when you do a language from scratch and have to get to A level in about 20 weeks (like I did in Spanish) It's dull dull dull, but it sorts grammar out.

Francagoestohollywood · 10/03/2010 08:41

Dreadful, dreadful weather.

Bucharest, IME the first year at primary school can be hard on them (remember my probs with ds last year?) even in the best school environment ever. They get tired, and they have so many new issues to deal with, that even the most "well balanced" child can get a bit anxious, or tantrummy or shy or over competitive etc etc etc.
Yes, my advise would be the usual: lots of cuddles, praise and showing interest in what they do with their friends/playground etc rather in what they learnt iyswim...

Gio ... glad to have another fan of the wire. I even bought 2 books about it

Sputnik I hope the phone call went well.

Camomilla · 10/03/2010 10:37

yes, got text from mum first thing this morning saying tanta neve e vento fredddddddddddddddddiiiiiissssssssimo . steel very cold here too!!

Bucharest - I feel your pain - DS keeps on saying he doesn't want to go to school but stay at home to play, and that when he's at school he's sad because he wants to come home. he used to say to me, but now he's started saying it at school and being very "distracted" (I'm sure the teacher was being very diplomatic with that term ). Maybe it's the realisation that he's at school, not nursery anymore, or that he thinks that DD's getting "special" treatment staying home, boh...

last time I compared UK-It dentist, they were pretty much the same. I know friends go to Croatia, but then for them it's only a day-trip, but the new thing I keep on hearing here in London is to go to Romania. still, haven't been for 3 years as i found better uses for the £300 needed to fix a chipped molar, though i really should go soon... i hate dentists having spent so many afternoons with them between years of apparecchio mobile followed by years of fisso ........ brrrrrr, awful memories...
