But nightynight this is a discussion board, what would you prefer, that no-one disagrees with anyone. No one insulted stitch on that thread but lots of people disagreed with her so what. And I'm sorry but I've been on MN for 4 years and I've seen lots of threads where people argued their point and weren't in the slightest bit bothered that people disagreed with them. If you argue intelligently it doesn't have to desent into insults, I'm not sure it did yesterday actually despite the fact that it was a fairly inflammatory start to a thread IMO.

thank you. no, thats not what I meant. I mean that I get hacked off when people just meet my reasoned arguments by repeating the fashionable view, without really justifying it.

Then, I think Im entitled to suspect that they havent really thought about why they hold that view!

and it works both ways nightynight.

katie
I disagreed with the ideas in the original post, but I thought some of the responses were a bit off. Try arguing something really controversial yourself, go on, I dare you, and then you'll find out what its like!

why did you say that katie? have I insulted you ?

I think most people on here have thought about the views they hold. It's free speech as far as I can see, but expect debate - stitch you did ask 'am I an old fashioned budiama?' surely you were soliciting views on the opinions you expressed on that thread

Report
katierocket · 23/06/2005 09:19

no, not at all. I was trying to make the point (in relation to the original thread) that everyone was "justifying" their counter arguments but the original poster wasn't and I think that's what stirred people up. Also, I have to say that I thought that was an extremely tame thread in comparison to some smacking/gina ford/iraq wars ones in the past.

Nightynight · 23/06/2005 09:19

oh, I understand. you mean you dont respect someone who posts a controversial view without justifying it. Yes, I agree. But I try to avoid personal insults, esp if Im in the majority, cos I feel the poor persons getting so much flack already!

Report
ninah · 23/06/2005 09:22

not at all, it was explained on the thread
I think it means .. no stop, ninah ... I think it means someone of traditional views? check thread, or maybe stitch will define

That thread would have been more interesting if stitch had come back to it more to join in the debate which she started. I find it quite frustrating when someone starts a contentious thread and then doesn't follow through with their arguments so that the discussion develops and becomes more rounded

I was interested to know whether there was a particular cultural/religious context to stitch's view and would have been interested to have heard something on that or any reason why she felt very strongly about the importance of marriage, young parents etc...

I think using the phrase 'politically correct' almost invariably disguises (or more accurately, reveals) a complete lack of thought. You can just dismiss anything you happen to find threatening or challenging by calling it 'politically correct' and we are all supposed to say, 'oh yes, so it is". I hate the phrase because I think it is lazy. In most cases 'being pc' is actually being thoughtful and challenging received opinion, not he opposite.
Also agree with whoever said that you can't have it both ways. People cannot simultaneously be doing things differently to the 'correct' or 'normal' way they are 'supposed' to and at the same time be conformist and closed minded.

HI Stitch, I didn't get back last night, but hope ur ok.

read the buddiamma post this morning too. It's on of the biggest problems of forums that things can come across the wrong way, and people can take comments personally rather than have an honest debate.

FWIW I think your viewpoints are a bit buddi-ish, but I think there are probably lots of people who also prefer the idea of an old fashioned married nuclear family, and I bet most of us expected to do that at some point in our lives, I know I want to and it is bloody hard doing everythign at once. But if only life was that simple!

For those who asked buddiamma is prob urdu, buddi is gujarati for old woman with the same connocations, and I think it is prob found in a few other asian languages too.

aloha,
I think we could compile a pretty complete dossier of views that would come under the pc title actually.
fwiw, I agree with most of them, and I dont see it as a derogatory title. I dont agree with them because they are pc, but for other reasons.

Report
lemonice · 23/06/2005 09:50

nightynight..if you don't agree with them just because they are pc then maybe other people have also reached their conclusions through other means/reasoning?
