Franca I feel your pain! Being cooped up all together for so long when dcs ill is NOT fun. Our doctor at the hospital said that the WHO recommendation is that you should wait 7 days after the last symptom of illness has disappeared before sending back to school/being in enclosed spaces etc. Boh! I was watching ds like a hawk yesterday as am DESPERATE to start the countdown-got through to 5pm and then coughed. I nearly cried
Sputnik and Rosa-glad the lessons went well. Out of interest and apologies if has already been discussed-how much is the average you can ask for private lessons? I haven't taught since 1997 and then it was lire so wouldn't have a clue.
Tantik welcome back!

Bucharest · 05/11/2009 08:29

Franca- they all turn into monsters when they've been poorly! If you remember dd was like that, and I heard maestra telling another mother yesterday that since her son has been back after his febbre he's had to sit on a banco on his own he's been so monello.

Sput- glad it went OK. Raymond Murphy is your grammar man- all his books are on scribd for easy pinching. Another good one is Michael Swan but he's a bit less user friendly.

Gio- I can get away with 20 euro an hour here for a one-to-one. It should be more really, dp was telling me about a mate of his who is having lessons with a non-madrelingua and paying that. The trouble is, here the townsfolk have a reputation for being mean- everyone is dressed firmata but it's all on credit and they will always ask for a sconto- even for the lessons, so I go for the "well, usually it's 25 euro but I'll give you a 5 euro sconto". Another prob here is that all the kids go to repetitione and that seems to work by the parents paying the poor student about 50 euro a month and expecting to be able to send Junior as many times as they want. They don't "get" that I don't do repetitione (is that spelled like that or with a "z"???) Anyway, I know that the private language schools round here can charge anything up to about 50 euro an hour for a lesson one to one say, with a businessman kind of thing. Kids I ask 15 for, unless it's a little group in which case I make it up as I go along- say 5 euro per child, then you make more and the parents are happy because they pay less.

Happy Birthday MiniRosa!

Sputnik · 05/11/2009 09:15

Thanks Buch!
Gio I am asking 15 per hour as I'm totally unqualified, but the going rate seems to be 30 for a proper teacher. DH is currently paying 40 for arabic lessons, I guess because arabic teachers are harder to find.

Happy 1st Birthday Minirosa

Tantik, welcome back and congratulations on the birth of DD !

Gio, 7 days without symptoms? Really? I don't think we can resist (both me and the dc). Today dd told me that she is looking forward to going back to asilo... I was thinking of sending them tomorrow, and pick both up after lunch (dd at 13, ds at 13.30)

Current rates here are around 25 euros per hr.

Francasaysrelax · 05/11/2009 15:44

yuppie! I got my profile back!

minervaitalica · 05/11/2009 16:09

Hello I am back (and happy birthday MiniRosa!)

I came back from the UK yesterday and I am a bit sad re: being back. I had a great time in London - it makes me wonder whether we made the right choice by moving down here (not irreversible, mind you - DH would go back if I really wanted to). But I suppose that is what happens when you go somewhere on hols...

I am sorry to hear that there is still more illness around - my sis (who works in hospital A&E), says that they are already swamped - a bit earlier than normal. However, still by people with colds thankfully - there are hardly more serious cases than usual (yet). She is being vaccinated this week though together with most of the colleagues...

Interesting discussion re: maternity too, actually. I had a really good experience in the UK actually - and I am terrified of another pregnancy in Italy as I will be put on bed rest from the very beginning as my last one was prem...

But on a lighter note I have a totally light-hearted question - but an important one for my marriage . If I wanted to make a glazed ham (you know how in the UK you boil the ham and then put in oven with sweetish glaze and it's fab), what cut of meat should I buy in Italy? I have a great butcher, but I am just not sure what to ask for...

Off to make Xmas pudding...

Francasaysrelax · 05/11/2009 17:29

Hi Minerva welcome back!

I think it's really hard to leave London. I'm not convinced we would have moved back to Italy if we had been based in London (though we might have, who knows, with all those school issues, boh!)

I don't know, maybe a coscia di maiale? I'd probably go to the butcher with a pic of a glazed ham and ask for advise

I think you all need to see my ob/gyn, she really, really is spartana, but also incredibly conscientious!

PippiHasALifeOfRiley · 05/11/2009 19:06

Minerva London rocks !

Gammon is a coscia do maiale affumicata according to the Dictionary. More I do not know but I'd like to know your recipe please as it sounds like something DH might love and he needs cheering up this xmas.

PippiHasALifeOfRiley · 05/11/2009 19:07

coscia di maiale obviously

Rosa · 05/11/2009 19:39

Minerva you are brave ...... DO you want it off the bone and rolled as that might be easier ....DH would love if I did that as he loves the one we have in the Uk but I hate the smell of boiled meat. As it is when I do Turkey stock I have to leave all the kitchen windows open !
Well minirosa is in bed . She had a teething day so a bit grumpy in the morning but she bounced the afternoon. Gio the cake was quite simple I just did a simple one as did a bunny outline and dd decorated it ...Lovely !
One minor grump..... I had told everybody what we had got her - and MIl was asking what to get her I then said on Tue She needs a winter jacket a lighter one as the one she has is a bit short on the sleeves. She has pumini for mega cold. So I get told to go to Iana and look. Then today Dh comes back with a huge box from MIL (who then came round later when we had cake and regali and I get a pit in my stomach .) Sure enough she has an activity table from Chicco so it can now twin with the Leapfrog one that dh and I bought her from Amazon .I just said Thank you and left it at that....

Francasaysrelax · 05/11/2009 20:04

Rosa . Your mil is quite something, isn't she? Che testona!
But glad you had a lovely birthday regardless of mil

TantiK · 05/11/2009 20:18

Happy Birthday Minirosa!!! The time is flying by way too quickyly.

Re. English lessons my Mil charges ?15 an hour for one on one lessons. This is in a tiny village with the nearest language school being an hour away in Trento. They sometimes run courses at the library for ?230 but I'm not sure for how many hours they are, I just know that some people have said they are too expensive. Weirdly enough I had an email turn up in my mailbox today saying that I would get an amazon voucher if I recommend a friend to do the online TEFL course - plus you would get a free Business English course. Let me know if interested. Sorry to sound like a saleswoman - but I did find the course very useful. Just need to find some time to be able to put it into practice now.

I'm off to struggle over Dr House on Canale 5 (I normally am glued to it on Sky where I change it the language into English...!) - wish me luck!

Camomilla · 05/11/2009 20:20

happy 1st birthday MINIROSA! just realised there's only 2 months difference between miniR and miniC, for some reasone I thought she was a lot younger

and belated congratulations Tantik!

MI, welcome back. did the roast ham a few weeks ago, really yummy!my mum also makes it boiled in birra with some veg thrown in, quite nice and tender too.

off to lie on the sofa as I'm shattered! notte!

Camomilla · 05/11/2009 20:21

Sputnik, I keep on forgetting the scan ! will try tomorrow, but keep on reminding me!

TantiK · 05/11/2009 20:22

Sorry for the terrible typing - I didn't check before I posted

Rosa · 05/11/2009 20:27

I can't honestly think she did it a posto but I know I said that we got her a tavolo with musica etc. PLus I know SiL knew as I bought her son some things at the same time and we were pleased about the delivery costs ! BOH so something is going to have to go to make space for 2 .
She got her this one chicco but you would think that the beehive letters and numbers would do something they don't you can't even push them down ...She got it in Auchan and I hope she diddn't pay ( or maybe I do) Eu60 for it.
We got her this one leapfrog and paid £22 off Amazon.
So I know which one was a bargain its just I don't have a big house and so have to think carefully about space and large bits of plastic !!!

Francasaysrelax · 05/11/2009 20:30

The leapfrog is much nicer !

Sputnik · 05/11/2009 21:53

Happy birthday Minirosa!
Shame about the 2 activity tables, one of those is quite enough to be kicking round the living roo, isn't it?

Tantik, I looked at the i to i course, it did seem to be the best of the online ones, but then I discovered I could do the CELTA one here in Rome, which would include teaching practise. I am stil undecided tbh. It's not something I feel really inspired to do but the chance came up to do lessons for this fried so I took it. Still not convince it's something I want to get further into. I will let you know though if I do and decide for the i to i one.

TantiK · 05/11/2009 22:02

CELTA is obviously the better thing to do, dh has done the CELTA there is lots of work involved but much more thorough. I did the i to i course just to give me a good grounding. I think if I were going to do more teaching then I would try to find a CELTA to do (think the nearest here is Verona - so not exactly near!).

What a pain about the two activity tables - maybe you could suggest that one stays at your MIL's for when minirosa is there!

No idea re. ham, but my MIL has managed to find a turkey for us for christmas, quite a miracle!

Sputnik · 05/11/2009 22:12

Snort!
