i am sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle Franca, but too often i find italian women have this "delicate flower" attitude that they need to be protected from everything and that drives me insane. it's a further extension of this whole bamboline attitude. not you of course, a) you're you (YAYYY), and b) you're milanese and i think milanese women have more balls than us terrone!
plus there's this whole other obsession with putting on weight during pregnancy, friends of mine were put on diets during pg and threatened with c-section if they put on more than x kgs (usually less than 10)...
in general doctors in italy are very good but i think medicine is run much more as a for profit business than here, i get to see a lot of dermatologists and dermatologists in italy are increasingly pimped up beauticians doing all sorts of cosmetic surgery. here dermatologists only deal with serious diseases. there's a much more trigger happy attitude to drugs and exams which i am sure creates a lot of money.
maternity care in the uk is often very appalling i agree (i literally bear the scars of poor postnatal care...) but i don't think the stats are so markedly different than in italy. you often hear horror stories in italy too, mostly involving hatchet job c-sections in private cliniche...
