OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 13:40

I think I was at my happiest when I was studying... I still feel "guilty" for not having had a "career" or at least a job I like. I'm not ambitious or "driven" though.

Rosa · 14/09/2009 13:51

I am the opposite I only study when I want to get something I would far rather work and learn on the job but with teaching I don't think you could do that. I am not sure hwo good a teacher I would make but as Sput I see a need and feel that with a qualification under my belt I would be in a better postition ...and also to ask a bit more dosh. With dh hours I can't go back to my old job anyway plus it was too hands on 24 hr cell phone on that kind of thing.

Sputnik · 14/09/2009 13:52

That's me too Franca, no ambition!
Bugger, it's raining and I have to go out.

Sputnik · 14/09/2009 13:55

Actually, school hours/holidays being what they are here I seriously wonder how anyone can work here without full time support from the nonni. It mystifies me.

Sputnik · 14/09/2009 13:57

DS has just brought me my shoes! Better go

Rosa · 14/09/2009 14:09

I know I got very strange looks when I said that both dd will have to come to the school meeting . Magari dd1 can either go to a friend or if SIL offers - she hasn't yet and she knows when the meeting is. DH is working so cosa faccio ? I can't be the only mother in that place with this problem ......
I MUST do some work .....Well Dh accounts !

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 14:10

Oh bless him!

Yes, nonni are a great ammortizzatore sociale!
I think Milan is pretty geared up for working parents, but still... scuole materne open until 18 (and nidi too), primary school until 17.30/18... so all my working friends rely either on nonni or babysitters. Or share with their partners.

Sputnik · 14/09/2009 15:03

I know Rosa, I would be nearly the only one with DCs at meetings. We would stay until DS got restless, which was usually just after all the latecomers had turned up and they were getting down to things, then we would leave. I gave up in the end.

Where I was before the materna was open til 4.15, but the elementare closed at 12.30! So Milano sounds pretty good!

Bloody hell, me and DS went out to the car in the pouring rain to pick up DD only to find one of the windscreen wipers had come off. Got utterly soaked trying to fix it then gave up and called DH to go and get her. There was a volantino under the windscreen wiper, think that might have had something to do with it....

Sputnik · 14/09/2009 15:14

Sorry, didn't mean to sound so negative!

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 15:42

No Sputnik you are totally right, I don't think there is enough support for working parents in Italy.
I think Northern Italy offers a bit more (often after school clubs are funded by the council) because it is "wealthier" and there is a higher rate of working mothers (and this is why most children at primary do "tempo pieno"). It is far from ideal though.
The % of working women in central and southern italy are the lowest in Europe, unfortunately.

Camomilla · 14/09/2009 16:41

SG, hope all goes ok!

re PILs - mine are italian but came over here 50yrs ago (DP was born here). but they weren't all that interested really, maybe their age, or maybe it's just them. friend asked FIL if he was excited about the imminent arrival of his 1st gc (DP only child) and his answer was that all children are welcome . they live up north, we're in london, but they could be a lot more present if they really wanted too, well, fil would be here all the time to do "jobs around the house", a nightmare to get rid of him , but would love mil to be a bit more present as it doesn't cost them much to jump on train/coach, but that's another story... I still think there's a bit of resentment for me "stealing" precious son/servant off them...

so, same here rosa, unless the school mtg is at night, both DCs have to come too, but we've compromised with both working p-t as childcare's too expensive

Camomilla · 14/09/2009 16:42

welcome back bucharest!

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 17:05

Oh gosh camo your inlaws sound like a piece of work!

gio71 · 14/09/2009 20:04

hi all, loads to catch up on. Welcome Sui. A friend of mine imported a Peg Perego set from Italy to UK-saved loads. Welcome back Bucharest. Rosa-so was Franca right-was it Colin Firth your DH took???
Am sitting on my balcony trying to cool down- DP requested a Torta della Nonna-in a mad moment I attempted to make it- how in the name of all thats holy do you get the crema to thicken-- have been stirring and sweating over it for half an hour and the bastard thing wouldnt thicken! In end in desperation bunged a load of corn starch in and now it is a lumpy mess
Definitely less attention given to dcs in general on the whole in UK Sui- although can't complain about my parents-they dote on ds. Did take me a bit of getting used to on my visits back that people weren't stopping me in the street to coo over ds though.
Your in laws do sound like hard work at times Camo. My FIL has been well documented on this thread as being a challenge as well . Had meal out the other night and had to listen to him spouting fascist crap all night . How dp turned out to be the right on lefty he is I have no idea....

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 20:19

Oh yes, Gio's FIL is well known on here!
mmmmm from reading (leftie ) newspapers there seem to be not a very good climate in Rome. Lots of fascist attacks on gay people etc

gio71 · 14/09/2009 20:28

Shocking isnt it Franca. Of course with that bloody Alemanno at the helm here it seems to be bringing the scum to the surface!

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 20:32

Oh yes, the presence of Alemanno as mayor probably enables these people to emerge...

Rosa · 14/09/2009 20:32

Am loading photos so its taking ages.....
Talking of attacks 2 foreign waiters were attacked by Bossi ites who did the trek in Venice yesterday ( when Bossi pours a flask of water from the Po river in the Lagoon) loads of people imvade the city wearing green !
Torta della Nonna never made it ... I have a crisp whirlpool microwave and did pizza in it tonight ....not bad !

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 20:34

Oh yes. Bossi and the flask of water. How ridiculous. Apparently it's to honour a Dio Eridano. Who is Dio Eridano?

Rosa · 14/09/2009 20:38

Not a clue ...I would google him but my computer is taking ages to load anything....

Camomilla · 14/09/2009 20:45

yes, gio, I remember

gosh, feel so detached on italian politics, can't be bothered with it, have enough trying to keep up here!

so, we think DD will be a mechanic when she grows up! we got her a wooden vespa trike thingy at the boot sale and it needed a bit of oil and cleaning so DP dismantled it, with DD trying to unscrew everthing with DS's plastic screwdriver! hilarious, she was really putting it properly too!

need a book! only got crime and punishment here (started it years ago, but didn't get far)... btw, haven't read an italian book/book in italian since I was at school as I find books are sooooooooooo much cheaper here

Camomilla · 14/09/2009 20:46

isn't there a water called eridania or s.thing?

Camomilla · 14/09/2009 20:47

no, sugar, boh

francagoestohollywood · 14/09/2009 21:00

ah your dd is sweet camo!
dio eridano is apparently the river po. what a load of bollocks!

Rosa · 14/09/2009 21:11

Could say the same for Bossi sometimes.....Right pics uploaded I must add some on my profile ... Bed for me another roller skating day domani . Dh came home early and I sorted out his underwear drawer ( cos I couln't put the clean ones away ) he has a stupid number of underpants and I threw out 12 odd socks ........the washing machine must have eaten the rest !
