I HAVE STARTED A LITTLE ITALY THREAD!!!!

hooray for me!!!

OP posts:

wombemeister my dd is 4, we live in the uk, I am italian and always have spoken italian to her. Her english was very poor till last year when she started reception. Now they are at the same level but but but when we are here she speaks italian with an english sentence construction, for example "che cos'e' questo per?". But this almost immediately stops when we go to italy and very quickly she grasps and speaks a million times better. In 10 days she improved a 100%.

So I would not worry much. As you prob read my dd is starting rec tomorrow and her english is well behind her peers. I am sure she'll cathc up quickly.

TheMysticMasseuse · 17/09/2009 20:25

Pippi what an exciting day for you and dd tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you

YYYYyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaahhhhh pippi! so glad!! (and yes, the school tops are so , I only got 2, rest are tesco's as DS needs one a day obviously!)

wombe - same as pippi, DS only spoke italian til he went to nursery, I was worried for nothing as his english vocabulary went through the roof within days, he's now in Y1 and fine. his italian is a bit "english", similar to what pippi said, but after a few days in italy he's fine again. so don't worry

so, after all my spinning (not much in the end, I had the experience, just had forgotten about it) I got the a-form 99%done, spoke to manager this am (the one I had before mat leave) and was glad I was applying and told me she'd check it over. So went to see old boss who's advertising the position, just to make sure I had a chance (which I have due to my experience) glad I did as the job is ft only and I'd only get 1 day from home, on top of being very busy (as the team is now dealing with what 3 teams were doing before with less staff). so it'd mean DP being a ft sahd as he would have to be at home even when I'm here plus he wouldn't be able to work the night shifts as those start at 4pm. the job would be perfect, even if challenging, just wrong timing . nail in the coffin was really DP being offered a job tonight so my career's on hold. never mind, that means I still have time to chat to you lovely ladies

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 20:40

oh yes.

thanks for support McC.

btw DD is not bothered/nervous at all but she already made friends with an half italian gorgeous boy (very similar to McC's ds actually) from year 6. I am arranging marriage already .

dh and I are drinking champagne...

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 20:43

oh, was meant to say SG, topshop mat jeans are fab! I still have a pair I can't part with (not that I'll be using them agai). Next have some decent stuff too, and H&M. would have loved Isabella Oliver stuff, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 20:43

thanks Camo!

I had been good and got all my uniform things cheapish to then blow it in a moment of madness. and they are not even that nice and the logo won;t be seen under the pinafor dress. But who cares!!!

francagoestohollywood · 17/09/2009 20:45

Hurrah Pippi, I'm so happy for you all! I want to know everything about tomorrow. Have you got a school run dress btw?

Womble, my dc are now 7 and 5. Both me and dh are Italian and we lived in the UK until December 2007, when dc were 5 and 3 and a half.
Italian was their main language when we were in the UK, but their English was extremely good, as they attended part time nursery from when they were about 12 months. Their Italian had a strong English accent and the grammar was a bit of a mix!
Both mine have never complained about being teased for their English.
Since we came back they lost the English accent when they speak italian (they have a milanese accent now, which is not as charming). Ds until recently used to say "Quanto ci porta ad andare in montagna?", they also say "hai flushato la toilet?" .
I do notice, however, that ds often uses the wrong prepositions (in italian) and has problems with the prepositions in english.

Your dc will be fine, their English will lose the Italian influence sooner than you expect. ANd I'm pretty sure the teachers will do all they can to help them settle and will be happy to have bilingual children in their class!

francagoestohollywood · 17/09/2009 20:49

sorry that was long!

Oh camo I'm sorry about the bad timing

I'm impressed by rosa's cake making skills... you have a job in front of you woman

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 20:49

LOL Franca!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 20:50

Oh no Camo. What is going to happen now if DH gets the job? Are you going to work p/t or be a stepford like me?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 20:51

Oh no Camo. What is going to happen now if DH gets the job? Are you going to work p/t or be a stepford like me?

francagoestohollywood · 17/09/2009 21:01

Pippi, how's that dd is starting tomorrow? Do they start later with reception children at your lea?

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 21:10

sorry, had to go and see the gigliola thread as non ho l'eta' is just not letting me in peace!

pippi, I'm carrying on as now, 2 days work from home, 2 days in the office. DH is only doing 2 days, just to get his foot in - if he hadn't left his old job there to go and do the one he was made redundant from, I could be a stepford wife and join you on long lunches between school runs as he'd be a supervisor with opportunity to be transferred anywhere in the world (even italy)

it's the first time it hit me that I have to put career on hold, I got promoted after I had DS but now it looks like it'd be harder...

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 21:11

yes they do, in all the school. All rec years started last tuesday but they stagger them throughout the week. So dd was supposed to start tomorrow at old school and goes tomorrow at new school like everybody else. Some even strart on monday. Some schools they make them go just for a couple of hours for 2 weeks , usually the catholic ones. In the ild one was up to you and the child, so you sould go full time from day one or even let them stay just in the moring for a fortnight. In 'our' one (would I ever tire to say this?) it will be just till lunch till next week.

can I say that the Rottermeier in me was impressed when I saw an older boy being 'ripreso' for running in the corridor . The other school was far more lenient. Have no idea which approach is best but I like a bit of order! (God I sound like the father on mary poppins.)

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 21:15

yup I did get promoted as well when I went back after dd1 but I guess more on the basis of what I was before than on what I could do in the future. I realised then that it would very hard to be able to do it again. It caused me a lot of distress and anguish to come to the conclusion that my career was stroncata sul nascere.

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 21:15

here too, franca, the older start earlier, so DS started nearly 2 wks after the rest, only am the first 2 days til everyone starts. at the catholic school they only did mornings til january.

francagoestohollywood · 17/09/2009 21:18

Ah I see now , let us know how she gets on tomorrow!

Camo 2 days at home and 2 days in the office sounds ok. How do you manage to work from home with the dc around? I never succeeded!

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 21:21

I understand you perfectly pippi, that's just how I felt today, I always felt "below" most of my colleagues and the new young new-comers because of not being brit and not having done uni, but got more confident in the last couple of years, being the expert and only person doing that job, and plenty of encouragement from managers, and I know I could have done this job with my eyes closed, dealing with policy/legal stuff I like too. but if it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 21:22

sorry for typos, too much in a hurry and too much booze.

can you link to gigliola's thread?

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 21:23

DS's at school, plus DP's still here. but DS used to go to private nursery the 2 mornings I was at home, and this job, well, I can do it anytime/anywhere

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/09/2009 21:27

I know Camo I could have never done my job as well as I was doing it before children because I did not have the time anymore. I was never one to stay behind till 9pm but I could certainly stay till 6,7, etc. All of a sudden after dd is bang on 9, if lucky, and running out of the door at 5 on the dot. Cannot work like that and not fair on collegue who gave more; always feeling guilty and not good enough. Also fed up with fending off childless men's back-stabs. And I was not working in the city. Hats off to those of you who do, really.

Camomilla · 17/09/2009 21:28
