Does anyone else by their children designer clothes apart from me?

Hi my ds is 13m and i find it so hard buying nice things for him. Of course he has got a few bits from mothercare, next, marks and spencers and asda but occasionally i would like him to wear something different. These places never seem to offer anything different, they offer babies acting as old men in shirts and ripped jeans.
There are a few children shops near me and i just can't resist it. For ds first birthday he wore an adorable miniman outfit that was expensive but he looked beautiful.
What do you all think about designer baby clothes?

Socci, you have spoken my mind!
This seems an awfully long thread for such a banal question!

aloha · 17/05/2005 10:00

This is all so ridiculous. Look, I buy designer clothes second hand (by which I mean Miniman, Oshkosh, Young England, Italian and French labels and a bit of Baby Dior if I can get it) and sometimes I even buy something new, like Ralph Lauren socks for babies, so I should feel offended and slighted by everyone. I dress my son in tanktops which I think look gorgeous but some posters don't hesitate to say are 'ridiculous' (and, whisper it, I even like knickerbockers, though don't quite have the courage for them). Apparently I could be described as smug, 'lording it over the average Joe', making my son look like 'Eurotrash' in his 'naff' clothes, of being 'pretentious' and 'sad'. I could also take offence at the statement 'I'd rather have a happy child' as if dressing a kid in Baby Dior would automatically mean they were less happy. But you know what, I can't be bothered to feel insulted. I know nobody is referring to me. They don't even know me. It's not about me at all. I'll still send ds to nursery in Osh Kosh shorts and tanktop without a second thought. But criticisms are most definitely flying about here and not all one way at all. It must be this sort of huffy, ill-tempered thread that puts people off. Frankly, if it can put me off, it could put anyone off.

aloha · 17/05/2005 10:03

Today ds is wearing gap linen shorts (over a year old, and bought in the sale), a shirt from Primark and a tank top from Vertbaudet, socks that were a gift and Doodles shoes. Does that outfit pass the strict and exacting Mumsnet test, I wonder?

Lizzylou · 17/05/2005 10:05

Aloha, you are allowed to dres YOUR CHILD how you want to.......this thread just makes me laugh, I am not overly into fashion, but I do want my son to look nice, which he does in mainly high street and supermarket clothes. (I absolutely love tank tops on little boys, DS has grown out of all of his, but he looked fab in them!)

fairydust · 17/05/2005 10:08

yes i do buy designers - why because i want to and i can basically - also buy from next/gap/monsoon as well - depending on what kind of outfit i'm after.

piffle · 17/05/2005 10:12

Take a day off and missed this GRRR
My life revolves around kids clothes
I op shop and sell on ebay, I also buy off Ebay and op shops for my dd.
For us it is more a case of what fits her, she is tiny waisted and fits mostly only continental gear French or the smaller US fitting things Gymboree and Gap - I buy standard M+S Tesco vests and tee shirts though
I detest paying full price for anything though and I don't like designer labels slogans etc being really obvious - I buy stuff that looks good, washes well and will sell on well.
I like dd to look nice and I like clothes to wear well seeing as she rarely grows out of anything!
Although that said I've curtailed my ebaying now as I am bored with it!
Who cares what people spend their money on, ffs they're OUR kids we can dress them how the hell we like, it's of no consequence to anyone else, nor is it anyone elses BUSINESS!

handlemecarefully · 17/05/2005 10:15

Well I doubt that loulabelle will post again - so we can all give ourselves a collective pat on the back for seeing off the newbie eh?

loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:16

how did i look down at your choices. i just said that personally i wouldn't queue up in the next sale as i think it is pointless. Doens't mean that you think that it is pointless does it?

Today my 3 yr old ds is wearing a Tommy Hilfiger top, M&S trackpants (£4) and rather garish Bob the Builder socks.

How cool is that?

sigh - I'm just soooooooo stylish

JoolsToo · 17/05/2005 10:18

like the socks

lima · 17/05/2005 10:19

so does he Jools

loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:23

i have posted again and why shouldn't i post? ok some of my posts were rude but i was only being defensive. Everybody seemed to jump at me assuming that all i dressed ds in was designer. Yes he has got bits and peices that are designer but also a lot of highstreet. I just think that designer stuff is different sometimes. I can't stand it that when i go to lakeside every baby is a walking next catalogue!
My ds is hardly designer today , he is wearing tesco striped linen trousers, m&s t-shirt and white kickers.

OP posts:
Toothache · 17/05/2005 10:29

Knickers??? I thought he was only 13mths old... surely you mean nappies? Or does age as quickly as you do?

Aloha - For someone that has been put off by this thread you've done a lot of reading a posting on it!
According to Loulabelle222 you dress your child in clothes that are covered in someone elses shit and puke..... coz you buy secondhand. You are very thick skinned to not be offended by things like that. But you do seem to get offended by other people taking offence!! ...if that makes any sense. Ho hum... back to work in my Armani suit and Ralph Lauren Safety boots.

Toothache · 17/05/2005 10:30

oooops.... just noticed it was white KICKERS!

loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:35

if somebody wants to wear armani suits and ralph lauren safety boots then fair enough. There are people out there that do this but you know what toothache? To me your sounding a tinsy winsy bit jealous. That is why you are slagggin all the posts off about designer clothes. If i want to dress my child in brand new designer clothes then that is fair enough k! I explained after the second-hand post that i am funny about other childrens clothes. If it was somebody i knew then fair enough I would have as much as i could get!

OP posts:
Toothache · 17/05/2005 10:39

lol Loulabelle222 - You obviously didn't get what I meant.... I work on a building site... it was Ralph Lauren SAFETY Boots I was talking about.... trying to be funny. And PMSL @ Jealous... I can assure you I'm not jealous of you. If I wanted to waste money on clothes then I would. I just choose to waste money on different things!

handlemecarefully · 17/05/2005 10:41

Shut up the pair of you before I knock heads together!

loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:43

well then so if you waste your money on different things what is your problem with me wasting money on clothes?
I know you was being funny with the ralph lauren work boots but what i am saying is some people do choose to spend the money on things like that. My friend has just bought an £700 louis vuitton bag and it is hideous but she likes it so its up to her. I personally wouldn't do that, i'd rather go on holiday but everyone uses money differently!

OP posts:
loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:44

i am just stating my point hmc- please don't tell me to shut up i ended the thread saying it was pointless but everyone had to carry on with it!

SleepyJess · 17/05/2005 10:46

Yes My 4 y/o DS LIVES in designer labels..

OshKosh dungarees.. used, from Ebay. Only thing that stops him crawling out of his trousers! (He has cp) And I sure as hell can't afford them new.. and why would I want to when I buy them for a few quid in good condtion?

SJ x

handlemecarefully · 17/05/2005 10:46

and I'm not taking sides

loulabelle222 · 17/05/2005 10:51

i didn't mean jealous of me , she hasn't got anything to be jealous of me for. I am getting offended because everyone is like its a waste of money whats the point..blah blah blah but I havent turned round and said what do you buy your childrens things from sainsburys (example) for its a pile of crap and its such a waste. If thats what i want to spend my money on then whats the problem?
