welcome!

OP posts:
MEMsmum · 16/06/2009 20:37

Camomilla - apologies for delay in saying thank you so much (should say mille grazie but my italian is shameful!!) - it makes a bit more sense now. Part of the trouble is that my nephew's going to have to repeat this year and I think his pride is dented. Sigh. Will have to wait and see - would be easier if he actually knew what he wanted to do too.

Enjoy your summer - hope you don't have any more flooding - my sister's basement floods regularly too!!

Camomilla · 16/06/2009 22:13

MEMsmum, forgot to say, I spoke to my mum and things have obviously changed since I left Italy, now school's compulsory til 16, but they have to stay in some sort of apprentship/training til 18 (was a bit vague on this - she's back dealing with primary school with my niece so not thinking of secondary ed just yet). I've tried searching for you, but couldn't find anything in english, but I'm sure franca will correct me/explain better when she's back. hopepully the extra year will be useful for your nephew to have a clearer idea of what he wants to do.

Camomilla · 16/06/2009 22:19

all this talk of food... I have to say to quite like pret and good pub food (rare to find though) but can't stand soggy bendy chips (DS says "nonna makes the bestest patatine in the whole world"). mmmmmmm, frittura mista di pesce, looking forward to that!!..... but if I moved I'd miss marmite, digestives and scones with clotted cream... and neighbours and home and away , unless we move to australia of course here I miss machine, pan di stelle, gocce, tonno rio mare, kinder fetta al latte, cornetti alla crema...

Sputnik · 16/06/2009 22:34

Apparently you have survived another day Camo!

Well digestives are easy to find here these days. Marmite findable, at least in Rome. Clotted cream, I never understood what that is anyway! Probably incredibly unhealthy.
Right off to bed.

Camomilla · 17/06/2009 14:49

yes, surviving, DP a bit less , by 10am I could nearly see smoke coming out of his ears ! at least I'm not in his company during the day as they're outside knocking the old shed down... but breakfast and supper is enough to make you lose the will to live!

oh, that time already... espresso and then brave the wind to pick DS up from school...

Sputnik · 17/06/2009 15:41

I had to brave the heat today, I really can't handle it. DD's school finishes at 1 now and it's really hot, but we have to wait til 1.30 to pick up DS as they don't like parents arriving during lunch. So we have to hang around and it's bloody hot and by the time we get home for lunch it's gone 2 (DS stays for lunch at nursery but doesn't actually eat it )
I might have to pick him up before lunch and get DD earlier, in which case I'll get about 2 hours childfree.

Sorry for random rant, it is hot!

gio71 · 18/06/2009 06:33

it was so hot yesterday Sputnik, it's not the weather to hang around waiting for anything in. We went too the shops yesterday and I ended up shouting at ds to walk quickly such was desperation to get home in front of fan

Bucharest · 18/06/2009 06:50

Sputnik- we are the same, dd arrives home on the little bus at any time between 1.10 and 1.30 so that's 20 whole minutes I have to stand baking on the street corner, while bikini clad beauties trollop around...and there's me broiling like an unattractive prawn and sweating like a pig...(very unattractive animal metaphors here...)

Passport still not here.....aaaargh.

gio71 · 18/06/2009 08:48

Bucharest. I can't do glam at best of time, in the heat it's impossible. I want to know how women can go around with their long hair cascading down their back in this heat. And look cool and impossibly gorgeous. When if I have 1 little wisp escape from my scrunched up mess I want to chop my head off!
When do you need passport by?

Sputnik · 18/06/2009 09:58

I think it's time the parasol makes a comeback!
I shouted at DD to hurry up too yesterday! I have also wondered about the hair thing, I really think people have different levels of heat/cold tolerance though, I am often going around in a light cardigan while everyone else has bodywarmers.

Camomilla · 18/06/2009 11:19

, yes, I think it's a genetic thing, for example this morning during the school run, sunny/cloudy/a bit windy, I was wearing long skirt, vest, t-shirt, cotton cardi, most of the other mums were wearing just vests. I remember once driving in yorks for xmas, at night, a group of girls wearing strapless dresses, no tighs, sandals, and this guy walking with shirt open with wind and snow blowing - I was in the car wearing vests/tops/jumpers/coat and blanket

but can't do hair down in the heat, well, have to now as it's too short to have it up, but when I had it long it was always up

still cloudy and windy, where's this hot summer we were promised !?!?!?

Camomilla · 18/06/2009 11:21

oh, I was using the pushchair's parasol the other day as I had DD in the sling and thinking it'd be great if I could find a proper sized one!

Rosa · 19/06/2009 20:54

you can get these lace brolly things all over Venice.....

All ok here Dh in A=E I shut his fingers in the ellectric windows in the car he did say there was too much draft on the girls so I shut them ......He said he just said figlia ...well we have 2 - I am very sorry but I think I have an excuse. Forecast bad here for weekend but so far so good apart from MInirosa not really sleeping well.... AM so glad am not in the humidity.... As for scrunchie I have on fisso in my hair can't cope with it down either.....

italyhereicome · 19/06/2009 21:18

HELP!
things with my host family have changed, the grandmother is very ill, and the child is going to the paternal grandparents. So I have to leave. Any of you need an au-pair for a year?? I am currently in Savona. and can come tomorrow if needs be. Or know anyone that needs an aupair? I am on aupair world. Dale is my surname.

Sputnik · 19/06/2009 21:37

Sorry Rosa, I had to snigger. Hope there's no major damage though.

Sputnik · 19/06/2009 21:38

Sorry, can't help ItalyhereIcome

Camomilla · 19/06/2009 22:52

oh, no, ItalyhereIcome, sorry, can't help, don't know anyone back home who would need an aupair, hope you can find another family soon...

Rosa at "I have an excuse"... hope he's ok though.

here's not toooooo bad, though normally DP's fuming by 10am, running around the house, then going back outside to carry on with the works... I'm trying to go out for a few hours every day to avoid getting drawn into arguments, the house is a mess, but 5 days left... "only" 5 days...
this morning I went to DS's school assembly as it was his class' turn to hold it, he had a line to say, it was sooo sweet! oh, and he loves me from here all the way to Africa [lol]

gio71 · 21/06/2009 09:52

hows dh Rosa?
lovely thunderstorm seems to have cleared the air, much more bearable here now.
So is this the beginning of the end for Berlusca do we think??? Am I being over optimistic? I see that rumblings of displeasure are starting to be heard from the Vatican.....

Sputnik · 21/06/2009 16:40

That would be good.
It's about 15 degrees up here today!

DelGirl · 21/06/2009 21:24

hello . Sorry i've not posted before, it's taken me a week to get over the return journey, lol! I shan't do the early flight from Pisa again without an overnight stay the night before as I had less than 3 hours sleep, drove at 4 in the morning for 4 hours and then the flight was delayed. DD was sick in the car on the way and my credit card was swallowed up in the benzina station! .

ANYWAY, despite that, we had such a lovely time and I really was very sad to leave, I was almost in tears . I was hoping to return in October but can't have the time off so i'm not sure when we shall next make it . Was thinking late Aug/early Sept but with dd starting school, I think it will just be too much

Sputnik, it was great to see you and your dd & ds (how self sufficient is he???.......)

Rosa, sorry to hear about your dh - hope he's ok.

Sputnik · 21/06/2009 21:53

That return journey sounds a nightmare! Hope you and DD have recovered.

Rosa · 22/06/2009 16:14

Allok he is fine thanks and I must admit to having a huge laughing fit about the whole incident ....one with tears coming down my face as I was laughing so much . He got an extra 2 days off and we have had a great weekend. Its raining right now but we have had the best of the day ....hope its just a passing storm ! Del girl thats teh reason I don't do early flights as I always end up arriving late or something happens!!!

Sputnik · 22/06/2009 18:08

Sounds great, you should shut your DH's fingers in the window more often then!

Camomilla · 22/06/2009 22:40

hi everyone! -2!!! hasn't be too bad... I just avoid conversation really... DP's friend wanted to come and see FIL on sat and they ended up disagreeing on everything (as fil normally does , not rude or anything though) and when he (friend) left, he said "you must have so much patience" . that'll teach him coming over and inflate FIL's ego even more!! anyway, from thursday I'll finally be able to catch up on washing etc! yeah!

Rosa, glad he's ok! Delgirl, I could never do that!!

Sputnik · 22/06/2009 22:54

You are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, well done!
